Bearing System Sees No Wear After 20,000 Hours

After nine years of operation in the harsh, abrasive waters of Alaska’s Yukon River, aboard Inland Barge Service’s push boat Ramona, Thordon Bearings’ RiverTough water-lubricated tail-shaft bearing system has emerged completely free of wear and tear, according tot the manufacturer. Canada: Halifax Shipyard On Hand To Replace Lost Rudder

In November 2003 the Gorthon Lines AB vessel Margit Gorthon lost her rudder in the St. Lawrence River. The RoRo vessel features starboard side ramps and measures 463.9 x 73.1 ft. (141.4 x 22.3 m) and is 14,240 dwt. Halifax Shipyard visited the vessel and found that not only the rudder was gone, but the 343 mm rudder stock broken in three pieces and the steering gear flat bottom shell ripped and twisted. One of the pieces of the rudder stock was embedded in the rotary vane steering gear. All CP propeller blades were damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced. After some number crunching and discussions, Gorthon Lines AB decided to have its incapacitated vessel towed to Halifax Shipyard for repair in late November 2003.

5,000-HP Z-Drive Tug Delivered

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the 5,000 hp Z-Drive Tug Independent to Marine Towing of Tampa. The 92 x 32 x 13.7-ft. tug is designed for ship handling and built to ABS Class Maltese Cross A1, Maltese Cross AMS, with notation: Towing Service and Fire Fighting Capability. Independent admeasures 148 gt and has a Load Line based on USA flag registry and USCG rules. Bollard pull is estimated at 135,000 lbs ahead and 130,000 lbs astern. Independent is powered by High Displacement Caterpillar 3516 B main engines – rated at 2,500 bhp @ 1,600 rpm – with electronic injection.

Vessels: Washburn & Doughty delivers Independent

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the 5,000 hp Z-Drive Tug Independent to Marine Towing of Tampa. Independent is powered by High Displacement Caterpillar 3516 B main engines - rated at 2,500 bhp @ 1,600 rpm - with electronic injection. The propulsion units are Rolls-Royce 1650H Z drives equipped with 2,400 mm stainless steel propellers and Kort nozzles with stainless steel liners.

Washburn & Doughty Launches Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg, built by Washburn & Doughty for Cape Fear Towing Company of Wilmington, N.C., will be primarily used for docking shops and coastal towing. Fort Bragg was designed by Washburn & Doughty's naval architect and vice-president, Bruce Washburn, and built to ABS and USCG standards, but not classed. The vessel is powered by two Caterpillar 3516 electronic main engines rated at 2,200 hp at 1,600 rpm. These engines power two Ulstein model 1650H Z-drives, with a combined capacity to produce 54 tons of bollard pull. The Z-drives are outfitted with 90 in. Bird Johnson stainless steel propellers, kort nozzles with stainless steel liners and hydraulic steering controls. The vessel features a NETEC 30 in. electric capstan on the aft deck and a NETEC hydraulic escort winch on the fore deck.
