The Coast Guard assisted a pilot involved in an aircraft emergency in Georgetown, Delaware, today. A Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was returning from routine training with members of Coast Guard Station Crisfield, Maryland, when crews heard an aircraft emergency broadcast on the radio. The helicopter crew diverted to respond to the incident at Delaware Coastal Airport, where they came upon an airplane that was on fire, at about 3 p.m. Once on-scene a Coast Guard rescue swimmer and flight mechanic provided emergency assistance to the injured pilot until local Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived. “Unique cases like this illustrate the well rounded nature of our rescue personnel,” said Lt. Clint Lemasters, pilot at Air Station Atlantic City.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach crewmembers swam to shore after their rescue boat capsized in rough waters near East Rockaway Inlet, today. At approximately 2 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound Command Center received an urgent distress call from the 76-foot scallop fishing vessel, Carolina Queen III, that had been taking on water with seven mariners aboard. Shortly after, the master reported the vessel was under control and had run aground near the East Rockaway Inlet. Coast Guard Station Jones Beach launched a 25-foot Response Boat Small to assist. The inlet water produced 10- to 12-foot waves and the vessel capsized. The five crewmembers aboard swam safely to shore. The Coast Guard vessel ran aground and is currently secured on the beach.

The Coast Guard oversaw the refloating of a barge and tugboat Sunday near Absecon Inlet. The 77-foot Miss Katie experienced a loss of power Saturday and ran aground north of the Absecon Inlet, and the 135-foot barge drifted and ran aground on the south side of the north jetty. Personnel from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City arrived on scene Saturday, but due to weather conditions, salvage operations for the tug and barge were suspended. "Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay's Incident Management Division oversaw salvage and pollution prevention operations of the tug and barge today on Brigantine Beach, New Jersey," said Lt. j.g. Terry Plank, the federal on-scene coordinator representative. "Both the tug and barge were successfully removed from the beach and jetty respectively.

The Coast Guard medevaced a fisherman 75 miles southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, Thursday. The 43-year-old man was fishing with three other people aboard the 80-foot fishing boat Starbrite when he started experiencing difficulty breathing and numbness of his extremities. The Coast Guard hoisted two people to safety Sunday from a marsh off Fortescue, New Jersey. The Coast Guard received a call at 8:25 p.m. Sunday via landline that two men were stranded on a marsh after the sailing vessel Leo II became disabled due to mechanical issues. A Coast Guard MH-65 dolphin helicopter crew form Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City responded to the distress call. The helicopter crew hoisted the two men and transported them to the Cape May Airport in Cape May, New Jersey with no reported injuries. "Thankfully these mariners had both working communications and signaling devices," said Lt. j.g. Matthew Kolb, the co-pilot on the case. "They were able to call for help on a cell phone, which ensured quick dispatch of the helicopter crew leading to a timely rescue.

The search for a crew member missing from a containership between Bayonne, N.J. and Ocean City, Md. was suspended, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The crew member was last reported aboard the 600-foot, Marshall Islands flagged freight ship Ibrahim Dede after departing Bayonne. The crew discovered the man was missing while the ship was in transit to its next port, notifying Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Coast Guard Station New York 45-Foot Response Boat crew, a Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City H-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an Air Station Elizabeth City C-130 Hercules airplane crew searched for the crewman from 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to 3:30 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard will officially debut its newest National Security Cutter (NSC), Coast Guard Cutter James (WMSL 754) during a ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Coast Guard Base Boston. Ahead of the commissioning ceremony, Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City coordinated a photo opportunity with the Coast Guard Cutter James and Coast Guard Barque Eagle while underway in the Atlantic Ocean. The new cutter is named for Capt. Joshua James, who is one of the most celebrated lifesavers in history.

Coast Guard crews are continuing to monitor oil recovery operations (ORO) in the water near the International-Matex Tank Terminal (IMTT) Bayonne, New Jersey, Monday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received notification at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday from IMTT crewmembers of an oil spill as a result of an allision between a tug and a fuel terminal pier. The Coast Guard immediately launched members from the Sector New York Pollution Response Team to investigate. A Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, also responded. At this time, it is estimated that less than 1,000 gallons of oil entered the water and contracted crews are in the process of recovering the product.

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a 67-year-old woman Thursday from a cruise ship approximately 75 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey. A medical doctor aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 7:53 p.m. to report the woman was in need of immediate medical assistance. After consulting with the flight surgeon, the woman was recommended for medical evacuation. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City arrived at the Norwegian Breakaway at 9:27 p.m.…

The U.S. Coast Guard announced it medevaced a 49-year-old man at approximately 8 a.m. Monday from a fishing boat about 50 miles offshore from Lewes, Del. A crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Mary Elizabeth alerted Coast Guard watchstanders of an ailing crewmember who was in need of immediate medical attention. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City hoisted the man and took him to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where his care was transferred to hospital personnel.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it medevaced an injured cruise ship passenger off the coast of Toms River, N.J. Thursday after watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received notification from the cruise ship Carnival Splendor of an 84-year-old Canadian female who fell, injured her hip, and was in need of medical attention. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City arrived on scene, hoisted the woman and transferred her to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. “This case is a great example of how Coast Guard training has a real-world impact,” said Lt.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people Tuesday who were stranded on Shelter Island, near Beach Haven after their 18-foot boat became grounded during a hunting trip. A man used a cell phone to report he and two other people were stranded on the island after they were hunting and their boat grounded during low tide. The men reported they were very cold despite being dressed appropriately for hunting in cold temperatures, but had no immediate medical concerns. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City located and hoisted the three men. They were transported to the air station, where their care was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel. “They were about 15 miles away and we were there in seven minutes,” said Capt.

The Coast Guard and two good Samaritans rescued two men and recovered two men Monday after the 28-foot catamaran the four boaters were on capsized near Ocean City, Md. A good Samaritan aboard the Lori M contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at approximately 9 a.m., reporting a catamaran had capsized approximately 32 miles northeast of Ocean City with four people aboard. Crews of the Coast Guard, Philadelphia fire and police, New Jersey police and others are searching for two people after a collision between a duck boat and a barge near Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. Ten of the passengers were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital. At 2:39 p.m. a collision occurred between a duck boat, with 35 passengers and two crewmen, and the 250-foot tug and barge Caribbean Sea on the Delaware River in about 10 feet of water. The Coast Guard launched boat crews from Station Philadelphia and Aids to Navigation Team Philadelphia and an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., to rescue those in distress.

The Coast Guard is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a tanker ship in Gravesend Bay that ruptured a tank around 9 a.m, Jan. 10. The tank was overfilled in the process of on-loading ethanol, which resulted in the rupture, according to Coast Guard marine inspectors. “Our paramount concern is for the safety of the crew still onboard the vessel and they will not commence any nighttime operations,” said Cmdr. David Flaherty, Coast Guard Sector New York’s incident commander. “The vessel is currently listing at about six degrees, and the vessel’s crew will not attempt to correct the issue until there is enough light tomorrow.

The Coast Guard launched a multi-asset response on Jan. 15 when a passenger plane plunged into the Hudson River here. Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley, based in Montauk. Once on scene, the crews distributed life jackets. Three helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., also launched. Initial estimates are that the Coast Guard rescued 35 people, and took them to a medical staging area at the Chelsea piers. The plane is reportedly stabilized and a salvage team is en route to begin work on removing it from the water. The Escanaba, a 270-foot cutter from Boston, patrolling offshore, was diverted and is expected to arrive early Friday.

An unidentified source of heavy oil washed up on the shore Tuesday between Shark River Inlet, Monmouth County, and Seaside Heights, Ocean County, prompting the Coast Guard and other federal, state and local officials to begin clean-up efforts. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office/Group Philadelphia along with the Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team, N.J. Department of Environmental protection, Bradley, Neptune, Asbury Park and Avon Offices of Emergency Response, New Jersey State Police, Tri-State Bird Rescue, and numerous other groups are currently responding to the spill that spans the 12-mile stretch of shoreline. The spill was reported Tuesday afternoon by New Jersey State Police.
