Securing Super Bowl XLVIII
New York-based Coast Guard units are no strangers when it comes to assisting with large-scale events in the area, but for the first time in history, area crews put in a team effort alongside local New York and New Jersey authorities to safeguard a Super Bowl event. Having provided security for the United Nations General Assembly, Macy’s Fourth of July Firework display, Fleet Week and the NYC Marathon in previous years, the opportunity for the Coast Guard’s assets to assist with Super Bowl XLVIII was also a success. “We’re here to protect our citizens,” said Lt. US MMA Pier Construction Begins
Construction work has begun on the United States Merchant Marine Academy's new Mallory Pier. Construction crews from Russell Marine have had a barge on-site in Hague Basin since early January focused on the first phase of the project, which required preparing the old pier to help support the new construction. Last week the first pre-cast concrete piles arrived by barge, and after much anticipation, the first test pile of the new pier was driven into the Long Island Sound seabed. Seven more test piles will be driven in the seabed this week and measurements of their holding capacity taken.
NY, Heating Oil Barge Runs Aground
A barge carrying more than 5 million gallons of home heating oil reportedly struck an unknown object and began taking on water near City Island, N.Y., at approximately 2:30 p.m., Jan 22. No pollution is reported at this time. The commercial tug Meredith C. Reinauer was pushing a barge to Boston, Mass., when they reportedly struck the object near Execution Rocks, N.Y. The master of the tug contacted the Coast Guard and reported the barge was taking on water in a ballasting void. The tug brought the barge to anchor off of Hart Island, N.Y. A Coast Guard 41-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Kings Point was quickly on scene to confirm that the vessel was not discharging any oil. Commercial divers from Randive, Inc.
Medevac from Tugboat Near Kings Point
The man was medevaced after complaining of stomach pains while on board the 99-foot tugboat, , which was anchored under the Throg's . A Coast Guard rescue crew from Station Kings Point responded and transferred the man back to the station, where local Emergency Medical Services Personnel were waiting. (Source: Coast Guard)
