ABB Opens Two-stage Turbocharging to a Wider Market

ABB Turbocharging will launch in mid-2017 a new frame size for its two-stage turbocharging solution, Power2 800-M, extending the benefits of high pressure ratios, increased turbocharging efficiency and fuel savings to a wider scope of medium-speed engine configurations, the manufacturer said. The new frame size, Power2 845-M, applicable to an increased range of ship propulsion solutions, will open up the efficiency and operational benefits to a greater spectrum of vessel types, said ABB Turbocharging.

New Partnership to Evaluate Dual Fuel Applications

American Power Group Corporation (APG) announced they will be working with Marine Fuel Conversions, LLC (MFC) to evaluate potential applications and opportunities for APG’s dual fuel solution specifically in marine applications including on-board prime and ancillary power as well as port based stationary power applications. MFC which is based in Glasgow, Scotland will be responsible for funding and coordinating all feasibility and beta testing activities necessary to determine how APG’s innovative Turbocharged Natural Gas dual fuel system  can be commercialized in Europe for marine applications. The feasibility/beta testing period is anticipated to run between nine to fifteen months.

26 GE Diesels to Power Panama Canal Tugboats

GE Transportation will supply Marinsa, Panama, with 26 V228 diesel engines. The 12-cylinder engines will power 13 new tugboats to be used in the Panama Canal in Panama. “This is a significant order for GE, the largest we’ve received to date in Latin America. We faced stiff competition in the marketplace and are delighted that ultimately our V228 engines were selected for this project,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business, Erie, Pennsylvania. Marinsa is GE’s authorized distributor in Latin America.

GE Expands Marine & Stationary Power Organization

GE Transportation Systems' Marine & Stationary Power (M&SP) business recently expanded its worldwide sales and support organization. M&SP offers a full line of competitive products including GE diesel and EMD* compatible engines and components for the marine, power and industrial markets. "Just as we continue to invest in our products, we're doing the same with our worldwide sales and support network. The talented team now assembled will greatly enhance our ability to analyze and create market and sales plans, as well as further develop and maintain customer service relationships and distribution agreements in the marine, stationary, and oil and gas markets," said John Manison, general manager of M&SP.

New Era for Gas Engines

With more than 300 lean-burn, spark-ignited gas engines supplied for stationary power applications over the past 15 years, Rolls-Royce is making a determined bid to break into the marine propulsion market with its newly-bolstered series of Norwegian-developed, gas-fueled Bergen engines. The preparation of the K-G4 type for shipboard use, plus the unveiling of the altogether more potent B35:40V-G design, have been driven by mounting environmental legislation and by national commitments to air pollution reduction attendant to the Kyoto Protocol. While cognizant of the longer-term, international market scope, the business rationale in developing a marine offering of environmentally-friendly reciprocating prime movers…

GE Receives EPA Tier II Compliance Certification

GE Transportation announces that it has received United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II emissions compliance certification for its V228 diesel engine family. In order for the EPA to grant Tier II compliance certification, GE submitted results from emissions testing conducted on its 8, 12 and 16 cylinder V228 engines at its Erie, Pa., facility. GE’s V228 family includes the 8V228, 12V228 and 16V228 engine configurations, for power ranges from 1,400 horsepower (hp)/1,004 kilowatts (kW) to 4,500 hp/3,355 kW. These four-stroke, turbo-charged and after-cooled medium-speed diesels are designed for the most demanding applications.

Hyundai, MAN B&W Are At Top of Engine Power

Rising Korean aspirations as to market influence and technological standing could alter the established order in an important segment of the engine business. While MAN B&W announced opening contracts for its new L21/31 design as a marine auxiliary, Hyundai Heavy Industries was preparing to roll-out its first-ever, self-originated engine type targeted at a similar power range. The H21/32 signals the emergence of Hyundai, the world's largest producer of marine diesels, as a designer in its own right. The company's development of the in-house Himsen brand denotes a move towards increased technological self-reliance, given the wholesale dependence up until now on manufacturing licenses from foreign engine firms.
