Wärtsilä-Hyundai JV Wins Big Order

The FLEX LNG ship will be powered by four Wärtsilä 50DF engines, manufactured by Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company.

The Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engine represents a pioneering industry change from traditional steam turbine machinery to a dual-fuel-electric concept with the benefits of much better operating economy and lower exhaust emissions. The engine can run on either natural gas, marine diesel oil (MDO) or on heavy fuel oil (HFO). Furthermore, the engine can smoothly switch between fuels during engine operation and is designed to give the same output regardless of the fuel used.

Ground Breaking for Manufacturing Plant Held in South Korea

A ceremony for the ground breaking for a new manufacturing plant for Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines was held at the Yeongam, South Korea site. The project is a joint venture investment between Wärtsilä Corporation and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI), and the new company will be known as Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company Ltd. The joint venture was announced in January 2007. The new plant will be dedicated to producing Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines for LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carriers. Demand in this market is expected to continue to grow in tandem with the increasing global demand for natural gas. Korea currently has a market share exceeding 70 percent of the LNG shipbuilding market.

Wärtsilä Records High Demand in LNG Sector

Demand for Wärtsilä's ship power solutions for LNG carriers and offshore applications continued to be exceptionally high during May and June. In the offshore market, Wärtsilä continued to be favoured as the supplier of diesel generating sets for drill ships. During May and June, Wärtsilä received orders from an undisclosed Korean shipyard to supply 24 Wärtsilä 32 diesel generating sets. These diesel generating sets will power four drill ships. The deliveries will take place from 2008 onwards. In the LNG carrier market, Wärtsilä continued to profit from its pioneering work during the past few years in facilitating an industry change from traditionally-applied steam turbine machinery to alternative propulsion and power generation solutions featuring dual-fuel engines.

Wärtsilä Wins 16 LNG Engine Orders

In the first two months of 2006, Wärtsilä Corporation won orders for a further 16 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power four LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers contracted in Korea. In January Wärtsilä was awarded an order to supply two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Korea. These engines will be installed in two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers contracted by Bergesen Worldwide Gas of Norway, and are the first Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to be ordered by DSME. In February Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries of Korea ordered two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers for Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) of Japan.
