Baltic Dry Index Hits One-year High

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index rose to its highest in a year on Monday, helped by higher rates for capesize vessels.The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, climbed 3.2% to 1,991.The capesize index added 176 points, gaining 5.3% to 3,485 - its highest level since May 25, 2022.Average daily earnings for capesize vessels, which typically transports 150,000-tonne cargoes carrying commodities such as iron ore and coal, increased by $1,456 to $28,901.Iron ore futures fell, with the Dalian benchmark hitting its lowest in nearly six

Philly Shipyard Transfers Prime Plate Facility to Avalotis Industrial Services

Philly Shipyard said it has reached a deal with Avalotis Corporation affiliate  Avalotis Industrial Services (AIS) for the transfer of operations of the shipbuilder’s Prime Plate Facility – a steel blasting and priming facility located outside the shipyard fence-line in the Navy Yard business park. Port Hedland's Iron Ore Shipments to China Drop to Two-year Low

The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, dropped on Friday and recorded its steepest percentage fall in two months, as Chinese steel mill restrictions continued to drag down capesize rates.* The Baltic index, which reflects rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels, declined 106 points, or 5.4%, to 1,857 points. For the week, the index dropped 13.3%, its worst week in nearly eight months.* The capesize index fell 263 points, or 7.3%, to 3,338 points.

Kalmar Bags Bilbao Forklift Order

Port of Rotterdam Authority to Invest in Port of Pecém

Port of Amsterdam to Build Europe’s Biggest Hydrogen Cluster

Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals), Tata Steel and the Port of Amsterdam have joined together to study the feasibility of a large green hydrogen cluster in the Amsterdam region.According to a press release, the three parties consider green hydrogen as vital for reaching climate targets and building a more circular economy, for example by combining it with emissions from steel manufacture to make new products.As a first step, the parties will study the feasibility of a 100 megawatt water electrolysis facility to produce up to 15,000 tons of hydrogen per year as well as oxygen at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden site, near Amsterdam.

The first shipload of liquefied natural gas (LNG) arrival to the LNG import terminal in Tornio, Finland, on Sunday November 19, 2017. The Manga LNG natural gas import terminal in Röyttä Harbor, Tornio, is a joint venture of the industrial companies Outokumpu and SSAB Europe, the energy company EPV Energy and the LNG company Skangas. Great Lakes Shipping Season Kicks Off

The 2017 Great Lakes shipping season begins today when the U.S.-flag tug/barge unit Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departs her winter lay-up berth in Erie, Pa., and sails to Cleveland, Ohio, where she will initiate the shuttle of iron ore from Cleveland Bulk Terminal to the ArcelorMittal steel mill at the end of the navigable portion of the Cuyahoga River on Wednesday. The vessel will load approximately 15,000 tons that was mined from Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. The next vessel to get underway will be the cement carrier Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Conquest on March 1.

Brazil Orders Vale to Close Tubarão Iron Ore Port

A Brazilian federal court on Thursday ordered the suspension of activities at Vale SA's Port of Tubarão because of pollution concerns, halting the world's largest iron ore exporter's ability to ship more than a third of its output. The ruling by the court in Vitoria was made as part of a police investigation at the giant man-made port as Vale comes under increasing pressure over its environmental record in Brazil after a dam burst at a mine run by its Samarco joint venture in October, killing at least 17 people.

Gilligan also predicts that once this sea change has been completed, GE will then be earning as much as 90 percent of its revenues from the industrial side of the ledger.
