New Lock at the Soo: Unlocking the Great Lakes
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District works on unlocking the Great Lakes by providing a much-needed resiliency at the Soo Locks with the construction of the New Lock at the Soo. Russia to Build $2.2B Metal Plant to Feed Shipbuilding

Naval Fuel-related Assets Protected by Coatings and New Robust Standards
The U.S. Navy has many assets other than its seaborn vessels to care for, and recently it adopted new standards to protect those that are fuel-related. Saint-Nazaire OWF Construction Begins
The first steel sheet of the electrical substation for the offshore wind farm (OWF) of Saint-Nazaire (west of France) was cut at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire.Ordered in August 2019 by Parc du Banc de Guérande, held jointly by EDF Renouvelables and Enbridge Inc, the substation will leave the shipyard in the summer of 2021, to be connected with the wind farm in 2022. Jay Cashman Wins Navy Contract
Jay Cashman, Inc., Quincy, Massachusetts, is being awarded a $14,321,000 firm-fixed-price contract for USS Constitution, Berth 1 pier repairs at Charlestown Navy Yard. This project will provide a safe mooring for USS Constitution and the provision of safe visitor access to the ship. The work includes demolition, removal and disposal of existing site features, hazardous materials, waterfront structures, utility systems and the provision of steel sheet pile bulkhead, pile supported pier, fender systems, mooring hardware, mooring dolphins, grading, paving and cobblestone pavement, drainage systems, water systems, electric power and lighting systems, landscape features, and incidental related work.

Silence on the Ship
A double-hulled tanker called Bernhard Dettmer refuels ships in Hamburg Harbor – power supply on board is provided by a Hatz SilentPACK diesel engine. It is end of the working day. Calm returns on board the Bernhard Dettmer, although the diesel engine is running, supplying the ship with power. There is no noise, however, because the engine is running very quietly. This is one of the outstanding features of the Hatz 4L41C SilentPACK engine. The Bernhard Dettmer is a double-hulled tanker, which is used as a bunkering vessel in Hamburg Harbor. Built in 2008, it is 100 m long and 9.50 m wide.
Initial Soo Replacement Lock Contracts Complete
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the completion of two contracts that initiated construction of the proposed new Poe-sized lock at the Soo Locks, located on the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. TAB Construction Company of Canton, Ohio, completed the installation of two coffer dam cells at the Soo Locks as the first step in creating a replacement lock at the Soo. The contractor used the $3,184,534 contract to complete construction of a coffer dam at each end of the Sabin Lock to allow for dewatering as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares for future construction. The coffer dams were constructed, in simple terms, by driving steel sheet piling, in a circular pattern, into bedrock then filling the cells with stone material.
Project Profile, Muuga Port
In very challenging weather conditions Danish contractor Per Aarsleff is installing its largest profile and one of its longest combination steel pile retaining walls for the extension to the container terminal in the Port of Muuga on the Gulf of Finland south coast, 17km east of the Estonian capital Tallinn. The site team, with its fleet of specialist marine plant, has been coping with freezing temperatures, strong winds and rough seas at the exposed site to accurately drive over 420 tubular steel piles up to 1.67m diameter and 45m long into the seabed.
New PVC-Free Alternatives for Interior Decoration
SSAB Laminated Steel AB now presents two types of PVC-free alternatives, called Dobel 2000 and Dobel 2005. Dobel 2000 is steel sheet, painted with a thin layer of Polyester paint laminated with a printed polyester film and thus both light and PVC-free. While being competitive in price and, at the same time, twice as thick as comparable coatings, it gives, on the other hand, a limited range of varieties in appearance and is, in first place, suitable for large areas since the minimum quantity for this product is rather high. Also to bear in mind is the fact that a painted surface cannot be repaired. Just launched at SMM 2004 in Hamburg is the new Dobel 2005.
Conrad Rides the (Expansion) Tide
The business of predicting the course of financial markets has led many companies - good and bad, large and small - to ruin. Perhaps, then, it is better to rely on tenets of nature, such as "Only the Strong Survive" when laying out business plans. Conrad Industries of Morgan City, La., has obviously ascribed to the latter, building a formidable fortress of a marine company with a wide geographic scope, including the recent news of its pending acquisition of Swiftships, an apparent $12.5 million deal which is still under negotiation. Visitors unfamiliar with Conrad Industries would be immediately struck by the modernity of its facilities in Morgan City, La. In continuous operation since 1948, Conrad Shipyard, based here, specializes in offshore and inland vessel and barge repair.
Pittsburgh District
For the first time in the history of the inland navigation system, a dam floated. The Braddock Dam Segment One floated into place and set down on Dec. 7, mating underwater with 47 drilled shafts that make up the dam segment's foundation. Vertical and horizontal alignment of the segment came within one inch of the design. Segment One, the larger of two segments, is a reinforced concrete marine structure 330 ft. long and weighing 16,600 tons. On Dec. 5 towboats moved it from the project outfitting pier a mile-and-a-half upstream, then it was sunk in place. Underbase grouting filled the gap between the river bottom and underside of the dam segment.
Great Ship - SK Supreme
Samsung Heavy Industries Co. is scheduled to deliver by year's end, the largest size LNG carrier of GTT Mark-III membrane type and is scheduled to deliver two more vessels within 2000. Supreme, a 138,000 cu. m. LNG Carrier has been designed and constructed with the regulation of ABS and KR classification societies and the membrane cargo containment system developed by GTT (Gaz Transport & Technigaz) in France. The cargo tanks are protected by a complete double side/bottom, cofferdam between each tanks and trunk at topside. For the hull and cargo containment system of cargo tank, Dynamic Load Analysis and extended fatigue analysis have been carried out to ensure the vessel's high reliability and long lifetime.
