Japanese steelmaker JFE Steel has signed long-charters shipping firms NYK Line, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines to charter three 210,000-ton LNG-fueled bulk carriers for transporting iron ore and coal from overseas locations to JFE Steel’s steelworks in Japan. Richard "Dick" Nelson, co-founder of shipbuilding and repair yard Dakota Creek Industries, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 78.Nelson began his shipbuilding career in 1963 at Weldcraft Steel Works, a shipyard in Bellingham, Wash. before going on to co-found Post Point Shipyard and then Dakota Creek Industries.When Post Point Shipyard was sold, Nelson co-founded Dakota Creek Industries as a ship repair yard in Blaine, Wash., in 1975. ClassNK granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) based on its Rule Part N which adopts IGC Code and its Guidelines for Ships Using Low-Flashpoint Fuels to Daihatsu Diesel for their concept design of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reformed gas fueled coastal LPG carrier developed in cooperation with Iino Gas Transport, Osaka Gas, Izumi Steel Works, and Miura Shipbuilding in terms of safety assessments.The vessel is designed to be equipped with an LPG reformer developed jointly by Daihatsu Diesel and Osaka Gas, and a dual fuel engine developed by Daihatsu Diesel.

The U.S. Great Lakes freighter fleet are well-renowned for being a 'mature' group of ships, a point magnified yesterday when Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding started construction on the first U.S.-flagged Great Lakes bulk carrier built in more than 35 years. The shipyard and the owner, The Interlake Steamship Company, hosted a ceremonial first-cut-of-steel event Wednesday, August 14, signalling the start of construction.The new River-Class, self-unloading bulk carrier is believed to be the first ship for U.S. Great Lakes service built on the Great Lakes since 1983.

The fully-rigged sailing ship Christian Radich has departed Damen Shiprepair Harlingen (DSHl) following five weeks of repairs and maintenance. The Norwegian-flagged, 63-meter, three-master is not only used as a training ship for young Norwegians, she also undertakes cruises and races with paying guests. She is therefore maintained to a high standard.The maintenance works at DSHl included high pressure jetting and cleaning of the exterior, while the rudder assembly including the shaft underwent maintenance works and the rudder trunk was replaced.

As I was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner I put on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While Indiana Jones and Doctor Elsa Schneider were being chased by the Brotherhood of the Cruciform sword through Venice and their boat was neatly shredded by the propellers of a larger vessel, it had me thinking of how much propeller technology has changed over the years. And how hopefully Indiana’s boat did not actually damage that vessel’s propeller. Recently an article passed though my news feed about the first 3D printed propeller. This is indicative of the direction the industry is taking.

Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet informs it has won a contract for the refit and repair works of a Swedish ferry from Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration). Awarded after a public tender process, the contract refers to the Castella, a 77-meter-long Ro-Ro ferry. Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, will complete the works between November 2017 and March 2018. Trafikverket, the Swedish governmental body responsible for national infrastructure, operates more than 40 different ferry routes that mobilize more than 60 ferries.

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) has recently completed works in Vlissingen and Brest on two major vessels in the fleet of dredging and marine construction specialist Jan de Nul Group. One of these is the Vole au vent, a 140-meter jack-up vessel built specifically for the installation of the latest generation of offshore wind turbines. The other is the trailing suction hopper dredger Leiv Eiriksson. Both vessels are among the largest in their classes, anywhere in the world.

Annual traffic for 2016 was over 46.7 MT, an increase of 0.3% compared with 2015. However, the port of Dunkirk did not escape the effects of the economic climate in 2016, which included the technical shutdowns, for maintenance, of the ArcelorMittal steel works blast furnace No. 4 and the Versalis petrochemicals plant, the permanent closure of SRD (Société de la Raffinerie de Dunkerque) and the delayed opening of the LNG terminal. In addition, grain exports have been penalised by a poor harvest since the summer of 2016. General cargoes continued well, with only a slight drop of 1% to a tonnage of 20.3 MT. Cross-Channel traffic had been exceptional in 2015, increasing by 17% to 16.25 MT.

Caribbean ship repair yard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) reported a busy 2016 for retrofit, refurbishments and repairs to vessels from the leading cruise lines. GBSL said it performed work on 20 cruise vessels during 2016, with scope of works included significant propulsion and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment, accommodations and public spaces upgrades and the addition of onboard attraction facilities. The trend continues: for 2017, GBSL has confirmed 23 cruise vessels scheduled for refit, refurbishment or revitalization from its customer base.

A familiar cruise ship visitor has returned to Gibdock, with the Gibraltar yard undertaking exacting repair and renewal work on Thomson Majesty, the Thomson-operated luxury vessel owned by Louis Cruises. The project involved two weeks in Gibdock’s No. 1 dock for the 207m loa (41,000gt) vessel within a fixed schedule, after Thomson Majesty came off her summer port rotations, in preparation for her regular winter cruising duties. The vessel left the dock on November 18, before departing the yard on November 21.

Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen recently completed a broad scope of maintenance and repair works on the Van Oord-owned Split Hopper Barges Jan Blanken and Jan Leeghwater. The vessels, both with 2,853 m3 hopper capacity, left the yard on schedule just 10 days after arrival. For example, all the ships’ systems needed to be checked and bought back up to speed where necessary. Minor steel works and touch-up painting were also required on both vessels. Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen handled the two sister vessels in its floating dock which, with its 229-metre length and 23,000-tonne lifting capacity, was more than able to accommodate the pair. The yard’s floating dock complements the rest of its facilities, including a 175-metre dry dock, a 215-metre covered drydock and three lay-by berths.
