Driving the Inland Waterways

Propulsion evolves, improves and powers forward in the inland markets. And, Z-Drive propulsion is the future. In a white paper released late in 2014 by The Shearer Group, Ed Shearer and Greg Beers outlined The Next Generation of inland vessels, what will drive design changes and the advantages of azimuthing stern drives – or ‘Z-Drives,’ for short. The authors point out that, until recently, towboats on all the inland waterways and Gulf Coast have traditionally been built using main engines connected to reduction gearboxes connected to long drive shafts passing through the towboat hull. In a nutshell, according The Shearer Group, the advantages of using z-Drives on inland towboats include decreased installation time…

Finland's Steerprop wins orders from Russia's Severnaya shipyard & the Bharati shipyard in India for ECO CRP propulsors. The orders are for the new generation ECO CRP propulsors that are designed to provide the finest efficiency and maneuverability at even the highest speeds. The combined value of these orders is approximately 10 million Euros. The multi-purpose vessel ordered by the Russian Federation will be powered by two SP 120 ECO CRP -propulsors to operate at speeds of roughly 18 knots.

Ferry Main Propulsion Order for Finland's Steerprop

Steerprop Ltd to deliver main propulsion system for a Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) passenger ferry to be built by Fincantieri. Steerprop Ltd. has been contracted to deliver two SP 120 ECO CRP propulsors, each with a power rating of 7 000 kW. To ensure their safe operation year round, the vessel will be ice-classed with the demanding Finnish-Swedish 1 A Super ice-class notation. Steerprop Dual-End Contra Rotating Propellers (CRP) will be fitted, and are projected to offer a significant increase in efficiency – and thus cut down on both emissions and fuel consumption. This passenger ferry represents a new generation of passenger vessels for its future owner STQ being larger and faster than its predecessor…

Steerprop CRP Model Tests Confirm Efficiency

Steerprop is now taking one step further, improving the efficiency still by introducing the dual-end CRP propulsor. As a part of the ongoing research and development process of the Steerprop propulsor technology, Steerprop Ltd. recently conducted a series of model tests at Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Steerprop dual-end contra-rotating propulsor configuration was tested in both the towing tank (open water tests) and in the cavitation tank. "The test series clearly showed the benefits of the dual-ended configuration and thus also proved the claims for high efficiency of Steerprop CRP. The efficiency of the forward propeller was measured to be close to 0.9!" said Hannu Jukola, hydrodynamist at Steerprop Ltd.
