Terminal Operator HHLA Prepares for Big Vessels

Port of Hamburg terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logisitik AG (HHLA) is making further preparations for the latest generation of mega-ships. It has ordered two new container gantry cranes for its Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT), which will be able to handle ships with a capacity of 20,000 standard containers (TEU). HHLA had only just recently ordered three new cranes for HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai. The ultra-modern container gantry cranes for CTT will be supplied by the Liebherr Company and produced in Germany and Ireland. Dr. Stefan Behn, member of the Executive Board of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, emphasizes the strategic significance of the decision: “We are systematically preparing ourselves for the ever increasing number of ultra large vessels.

Efficient Coordination of Mega-ship Calls at Hamburg Port

The number of ultra large vessels calling at the Port of Hamburg has been on the increase for years. This is resulting in some major challenges for the port operators, shipping companies and authorities. With the introduction of the Nautical Terminal Coordination (NTK), there is now a body to handle the centralised operational coordination of mega-ship calls for the first time – long before a vessel proceeds up the estuary of the river Elbe. At Hamburg port E-mobility Project, BESIC enters crucial phase

Ten battery-operated heavy goods vehicles now transport containers between ships and the yard at the highly automated handling facility in the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The aim is to charge the batteries of these container transporters when the grid has a surplus of renewable energy generated in northern Germany. The first battery-powered heavy goods vehicles in the world went into use at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) back in 2011. Now, a project is bringing together businesses and research institutions that are keen to find out how the batteries for these automated guided vehicles (AGVs) can be charged using surplus green power generated in northern Germany.

Hamburg Cruise Port Marks 500,000 Passengers

The Hamburg Cruise Port said it reached the 500,000 passenger mark in a single season. The port anticipates further growth forecast for 2014, with the 200th ship in sight. “The visit by the Queen Mary 2 to Hamburg on November6, 2013 will go down in the annals of Hamburg’s cruise industry and become an unforgettable ship’s call for everyone concerned,” said Frank Horch, Senator of the Ministry for Economic, Transport and Innovation Affairs. The visit was not only the 168th call of the current season but also marked the arrival of the 500,000th cruise guest in the city.

First voyage of the CMA CGM Marco Polo

Hamburg was the first continental European port of call on the maiden voyage of the CMA CGM Marco Polo. The mega-ship, with a capacity of 16,020 standard containers, is being handled at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai. The French shipping company CMA CGM sets great store by Hamburg because of its geographic location and hinterland links. On Wednesday morning, the CMA CGM Marco Polo became the first container mega-ship with a capacity of more than 16,000 standard containers (TEU) to call at the Port of Hamburg.
