USCG Leaders Testify on Budget Requests

U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Steven Cantrell testified Wednesday on the Coast Guard's Fiscal Year 2016 budget request before the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. Zukunft led his testimony by sharing his perspectives on the increasing demands the service is facing as four strategic trends converge on the Coast Guard in unprecedented ways. Those include combating transnational organized crime networks and securing our borders, safeguarding commerce, enhancing cybersecurity and adapting in the polar regions. Zukunft stated that his highest investment priority is recapitalizing the aging Medium Endurance Cutter fleet with the Offshore Patrol Cutter.

Coast Guard's Top Enlisted & Civilians Recognized

Senior leaders at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington formally recognized the service’s top enlisted and civilian members during the 2013 Coast Guard Persons of the Year Awards Ceremony. Vice Adm. Petty Officer 1st Class Travis Cutler, the 2013 Coast Guard Enlisted Person of the Year. Martin is a recreation assistant serving at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Slate is an education services specialist serving at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Conn. Mundy is a maritime enforcement specialist assigned to Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center’s Deployment Training Detachment Portsmouth, Va. “Mr. Martin, Ms. Slate, Petty Officer Cutler and Petty Officer Mundy, you should be very proud of your accomplishments,” said Neffenger.

Coast Guard to Appoint New Ancient Mariners

The Ancient Mariner title established in 1978 recognizes the officer and enlisted person with the earliest designation as a permanent cutterman and requires a minimum of ten years of sea time. A change-of-watch ceremony for the U.S. Coast Guard Gold and Silver Ancient Mariners is scheduled to take place aboard Barque'Eagle at 10 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014. The Gold (Officer) Ancient Mariner designation will pass from Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp to Rear Adm. Fred Midgette, and the Silver (Enlisted) Ancient Mariner designation held by Master Chief Petty Officer Lloyd Pierce will pass to Master Chief Petty Officer Steven Cantrell. Adm. Papp became the Gold Ancient Mariner April 27, 2007, and Master Chief Petty Officer Pierce received his designation on August 19, 2011.

The Coast Guard announce the selection of the next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard –  Master Chief Petty Officer Steven Cantrell. Master Chief Petty Officer Steven Cantrell is the current Atlantic Area Master Chief and will relieve the current MCPO-CG, Michael P.
