Mega Cranes for Port Everglades

Broward County’s Port Everglades reports that it is progressing with manufacturing the first three new Super Post-Panamax container-handling gantry cranes being built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. Inc. (ZPMC) of China. The design phase is nearing completion, and today Port Everglades Chief Executive Steven Cernak issued a second notice to proceed to begin manufacturing the cranes valued at $13.8 million each.“This is a significant step towards the delivery and installation of the first three Super Post-Panamax cranes later next year,” Cernak said.

New Program Makes it Easier to Ship Cars at Port Everglades

Crowley Maritime has helped launch a pilot Vehicle Validation Export Process Program that now allows shippers to submit original vehicle export documentation electronically instead of delivering physical copies to a local customs trade office. The automated program, which is the first of its kind anywhere in the country, is currently being offered in Port Everglades to exporters shipping used vehicles from South Florida to destinations throughout the Caribbean, Central America and beyond. Crowley was a critical player in developing the test program, which kicked off earlier this month. The test program offers several key advantages.

Port Everglades, Royal Caribbean Sign MOU

Broward County's Port Everglades has negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that provides the framework for a new long-term business agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. (RCL) that will include complete, customized renovations of the Port's Cruise Terminal 25 targeted for completion by October 31, 2018. "Our cruise line customers are becoming more sophisticated in the way they think about the guest experience, as we saw when Royal Caribbean partnered in the construction of Cruise Terminal 18 for their Oasis class of ships," said Port Everglades Chief Executive Steven Cernak. On Monday, RCL announced that its newest Celebrity Cruises ship Celebrity Edge will homeport in Port Everglades beginning in the fall of 2018.

Broward County's Port Everglades had a record-setting month in December 2016, logging 104,590 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units, the industry's standard measurement for containers), moving through the Port. This is the highest producing month in the Port's nearly 90 -year history, and a 15 percent increase over December 2015. TEU counts at Port Everglades have been climbing since September. "Our customers are bringing in higher volumes of consumer goods such as produce, clothing and household goods as the region's population increases. It's an indication of a strengthening economy," said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak. He announced the record TEU count at Florida Governor Rick Scott's 2017 Jobs Summit in Orlando on February 2, 2017.

Port Everglades to Deepen, Widen Channels

The Port Everglades Navigation Improvements Project has received federal authorization for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to move forward with deepening and widening the Port's navigation channels as part of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act signed into law December 16, 2016, by President Barack Obama. The project is currently in the preconstruction engineering and design phase, and can now proceed through the permitting and federal funding processes. The project is anticipated to create an estimated 2,200 construction jobs and nearly 1,500 permanent direct jobs locally resulting from additional cargo capacity. The Broward County Congressional Delegation joined local leaders today at Port Everglades to commend progress on the seaport's project.

Port Everglades, Panama Canal Renew Partnership

Port Everglades and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) have renewed their long-standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote trade opportunities for another five years. This renewal will extend their strategic alliance to 2021. The MOU solidifies both entities' dedication to growth and best customer practices. The ACP and Port Everglades first signed an MOU in August 2009. Areas of cooperation between the ACP and Port Everglades include joint advertising programs, data interchange, and competitive market analyses of the shipping industry. This alliance will also continue to promote the route to the West Coast of South America as well as the  "All-Water Route," the route from Asia to the U.S. East Coast via the Panama Canal.

Port Everglades, EPA to Study Air Emissions

Port Everglades has signed a partnership agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to study air emissions. The EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality will work closely with Port Everglades to coordinate research and modeling encompassing all port-related operations, technologies and anticipated growth scenarios. The EPA also intends to develop separate emissions estimates for areas outside the port's jurisdictional boundaries, such as highways and railroads used by Port Everglades customers.

Crystal Cruises Plans Return to Port Everglades

Crystal Cruises' ships will return to Broward County's Port Everglades beginning in Fall 2017, having last sailed from the port in 2006. Beginning October 27, 2017, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony will sail a total of eight sailings to and from Port Everglades, one of the world’s busiest cruise ports, with more than 3.7 million passengers in 2015. Port Everglades Project Step Closer

Broward County's Port Everglades is moving forward with a plan to widen and deepen its channels, but there are still several steps to go before construction begins, the Port's Chief Executive Steven Cernak told elected officials and business leaders during an event to celebrate the project's long-awaited approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, Cernak announced that the Corps has committed $1.2 million for the immediate next step, which is the pre-construction engineering and design phase, estimated to cost a total of $5.6 million. "Our Congressional Delegation has taken our message to Capitol Hill with determination and perseverance, so that we can begin the design phase this fall and be ready for construction before receiving Congressional authorization," Cernak said.

Port Everglades to Renovate Cruise Terminal

Port Everglades will begin the renovation for its sixth cruise terminal in five years this spring as Terminal 4 is modernized through an expansion and reconfiguration effort that will provide the cruise line industry with a modern dual flow facility just in time for the 2014/2015 cruise season. In addition, the adjacent Slip 2 will be extended by 250 feet for a total 1,150 feet of berth length to accommodate larger cruise ships calling at Port Everglades. The Slip 2 extension is slated for completion by the end of 2016.

U.S. Bill Allows Port Everglades to Deepen, Widen Channels

Port Everglades officials are encouraged after the House of Representatives passed the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) this week by a vote of 417-3, including the Manager’s Amendment which would allow Port Everglades to move forward with its critical harbor deepening and widening project prior to formal congressional approval. Now that both the House and Senate have passed their respective pieces of water resources legislation, they will appoint a conference committee to resolve differences between the two bills.

Port Everglades to Receive $16.5M in State Funds

The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) Council approved $16.5 million in allocations to Port Everglades to lengthen a cruise berth and to extend the port’s Southport Turning Notch to allow for more cargo berths. These allocations, which were approved under two different state funding sources, will become part of the Florida Department of Transportation  (FDOT) 2014/15 Work Program that comes before the Florida Legislature for approval this next legislative session.

Port Everglades Welcomes Largest Cargo Ship in Port's History

The largest containerized cargo ship in Port Everglades’ history, equal to the size of an air craft carrier, is calling at the South Florida seaport, Monday, October 22. The MSC Texas, at 1,095-feet long, 141-feet wide and 90,745-gross-registered tons, can carry as many as 8,238 20-foot containers when fully loaded at a draft of 47.6 feet. The ship is coming from Northern Europe on a weekly service into Port Everglades. Previously, the largest container ship to call at Port Everglades, also an MSC ship that came in March 2011, was 1,066-foot-long, 140-foot wide, 89,954-gross-registered-tons. Port Everglades Adds Shipping Service to Venezuela and Colombia

Port Everglades is welcoming a new shipping line with service to Venezuela and Colombia. Naviera Master Line de Venezuela C.A. will be moving heavy equipment and machinery/rolling stock on a bi-weekly basis from Port Everglades and, as the business grows, plans to offer the service on a weekly basis. The cargo will be handled by St. John’s Shipping Company Inc., a stevedore at Port Everglades for more than two decades. “We are pleased to add this new service to our fleet at Port Everglades. Master Line’s service will be mainly exports, a testament to the Port’s commitment in expanding exports, which creates more U.S. jobs,” said Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak.
