Harlem Rocket to Collaborate with Raymarine

The Harlem Rocket, a new high-speed boat tour on the Hudson River along the famed Harlem and Upper Manhattan waterfront set to launch in the Spring of 2023, announced a sponsorship and collaboration with Raymarine. Jurong Marine Services Orders LNG Hybrid Tug

Total, IFPEN Join Forces to Cut Carbon

The French Institute of Petroleum IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN) and compatriot multinational integrated oil and gas company Total announced that they signed a strategic R&D partnership yesterday, that includes an agreement to endow a chair at the IFP School, on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and technologies to curb CO2 emissions.According to a press note from the energy giant, the roughly EUR40 million partnership covers a period of five years.CCUS aims to reduce the cost of infrastructure and improve the CCUS chain’s energy efficiency to secure its large-scale deployment. India, Denmark Forge Offshore Wind Alliance

Acciona Gets DNV GL Certification

Statoil Debuts Batwind

A new battery storage solution for offshore wind energy will be piloted in the world’s first floating wind farm, the Hywind pilot park off the coast of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Batwind will be developed in co-operation with Scottish universities and suppliers, under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Edinburgh on 18 March between Statoil, the Scottish Government, the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult and Scottish Enterprise. Solar-electric Workboat Completes Maiden Cargo Run

Harnessing solar propulsion, the 39-foot vessel Solar Sal has recently completed the final leg of its maiden cargo run, carrying recycled cardboard along the Erie Canal without using a single drop of fossil fuel. Solar Sal traversed 72 locks and traveled a total of 650 miles across the state of New York, delivering four tons of cargo from Lockport to a paper mill in Mechanicville on its history-making journey. The vessel runs 8.3 mph on twin Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric motors.

UniSource Buys Gila River Power Station

UniSource Energy Services (UES), an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis Inc., has strengthened its generating portfolio and reduced its reliance on the wholesale energy market through the purchase of a share of the efficient natural gas-fired Gila River Power Station in Gila Bend. Under the terms of the purchase, UES subsidiary UNS Electric, Inc. and sister company Tucson Electric Power (TEP) acquired the 550-megawatt (MW) Gila River Power Station Power Block 3 from Gila River Power LLC for US$219 million. The New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST) and DNV GL (formerly DNV KEMA) today announced the opening of the new state-of-the-art Battery and Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Testing and Commercialization Center in Rochester, New York. The Center’s services include a suite of test, validation and independent certification capabilities that are necessary to introduce new energy storage technologies into the marketplace and accelerate integration of renewable and distributed energy. KEMA Collaborates on Offshore Energy Storage System

KEMA, in partnership with civil engineering firm Bureau Lievense and technology illustrators Rudolph and Robert Das, has developed an “Energy Island” concept to store power generated from an offshore wind farm. The innovative concept design is the initial result of an on-going feasibility study being conducted for Dutch energy companies. The Energy Island designed by KEMA, Lievense and the Das brothers incorporates a new concept in pumped hydro storage – an inverse offshore pump accumulation station (IOPAC). On the Energy Island when there is a surplus of wind energy, the excess energy is used to pump sea water out of the interior ‘subsurface-lake’ into the surrounding sea.

Propulsion Stays Firmly Based on Diesel Engines

Today, about 97 percent of the 90,000 ships of 100 gt and above in the International merchant fleet are propelled by large-bore, highly charged diesel engines. In the past couple of years, the discussion about alternative forms of propulsion increased, especially on the subject of gas turbines and hydrogen fuel cells (FC). Ships need a propulsion system that can provide reliable transportation from point A to point B within an acceptable period of time - with maximum cargo load, at competitive capital costs, operation costs and maintenance costs - with minimum pollutant emissions. A fitting example for the following consideration is a modern 100,000-dwt shuttle tanker. The transport of a cargo of 108,000 cu. m. liquids over a distance of 10,000 sea miles requires 1,600 cu.
