Wakashio Wreck Removal Completed

Technical operations to remove the wreck of the Wakashio bulk carrier that ran aground and broke up off Mauritius wrapped up this week as salvors recovered final sections of ship debris that were lying up to 500 meters away from the site of the stern section.On July 25, 2020, the 300-meter Wakashio struck a reef near Pointe d'Esny off the Indian Ocean island's east coast, triggering an ecological disaster and prompting the Mauritian government to declare a state of emergency.

Sembcorp, Coldharbour Sign BWTS Deal

Coldharbour Marine, developer of an in-tank, in-voyage and inert gas-based ballast water treatment system for large tankers, bulkers and LNG vessels, has signed an agreement with Sembcorp Marine that will see the latter offer the Coldharbour GLD BWT as part of the Sembcorp Marine Green Technology Retrofit (GTR) solutions for ship owners. The GTR solutions provide carefully evaluated ballast water treatment systems from a select group of equipment manufacturers with whom Sembcorp Marine is working closely.

Dryad Maritime: Ocean Ambush “Game Changer”

In the early hours of Saturday 9th August 2014, the radar of a product tanker transiting south, 200 nautical miles off the Nigerian shoreline detected a probable pirate mother ship lying in wait close to its track. Shortly after detecting the vessel, the crew was engaged by several bursts of automatic gunfire from up to three pirate boats. New Deep-Sea Trend in African Piracy?

"In the early hours of Saturday 9th August, a product tanker transiting 200 nautical miles south of the Nigerian shoreline encountered a radar contact of a drifting vessel along its track. After taking normal navigational measures to open the closest point of approach (CPA) from the drifting vessel and passing abeam at 6.5 nautical miles, the tanker’s crew heard a burst of gunfire; first from their starboard quarter when 6 or 7 shots were fired and later from forward of the ship’s accommodation structure, but this time a burst of automatic fire. Although visibility was poor in the darkness and haze, one crew member reported seeing the outboard engine wakes of up to three small craft that engaged in a chase of the tanker, during the period of gunfire.

MCTF: False Jones Act Criticism Distracts from Clean-up

The Maritime Cabotage Task Force (MCTF) said that recent Jones Act criticism is false and is only distracting from the job of cleaning up the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Responding to these misleading and inaccurate claims, those leading and coordinating the response as well as independent news organizations have said that the Jones Act is not preventing or delaying foreign vessels’ ability to assist with cleaning the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Jones Act mandates the use of American vessels and American workers in U.S. domestic maritime trade. Europe to Africa Route On Table

Hydro Air, a South African company, is mulling the possibility of launching a sea-air service between Europe and Africa in the longer term. Hydro Air, will launch its first-ever cargo service and first Africa-European air service in the first week of November with a Boeing 747-200 freighter. Hydro Air cargo's commercial director Louis van Deventer said the company was considering the possibility of a sea-air service in the future. He said the original idea was prompted because larger vessels could not serve smaller ports in Africa either because of the vessel size or due to the lack of suitable equipment at the ports. Feeder vessels could serve for instance, Angola, Tanzania, Kenya and South African ports. Islands such as Madagascar and Mauritius could also be served in the same way.

Aker Arctic to Design Drillship Enhancements

Frontier Drilling USA Inc, Houston, has engaged Aker Arctic of Helsinki, Finland to proceed with the initial design and conceptual development of the modification work for their turret moored Drillship Frontier Discoverer. The work includes development of a modified hull form and protection to the riser to suit the harsh environment of the Beaufort Sea. Aker Arctic will also conduct a series of ice model tests in their brand new model testing facility. Simultaneously an ice management plan, involving several icebreakers will be developed. Frontier Drilling's target is to provide suitable equipment to the industry looking for drilling opportunities in the Beaufort & Chukchi Seas as well as all other arctic regions.

Bouygues Offshore: Cawthorne Channel Pipelines, a $60 Million Contract in Nigeria

Bouygues Offshore has been awarded a contract with the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited for the pipelines aspect of the Cawthorne Channel integrated project in Nigeria. The estimated value of the scope is $60 million. It calls for engineering, procurement, laying and commissioning of pipelines. For a total of 74 km with diameter from 4" to 24", the pipelines will be installed in the swamp area of the Niger Delta, south of Port Harcourt. The project duration is 19 months. Commenting on this project, Herve Le Bouc, Chief Executive Officer of Bouygues Offshore, stated: "The laying of large diameter pipelines in the swamp area is one of Bouygues Offshore's specialties.
