ClassNK Grants AIP for Methanol Dual-fueled Tanker Design

Classification society ClassNK said it has issued an approval in principle (AIP) for the design of a methanol dual-fueled tanker developed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. The class society confirmed the design’s compliance with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) “Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as fuels” (MSC.1/Circ.1621) published in December 2020, and the “Guidelines for Ships Using Low-Flashpoint Fuels” published by the Society in 2019.Features of the design announced by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine Engineering are as follows: “In detail design, regarding methanol fuel, due consideration is required to properly reduce potential risk of fire and leakage by its low flash point and toxic.

Performance Shipping Acquires Fifth Aframax Tanker

Athens-based shipowner Performance Shipping said it reached a deal to purchase the Kalamas, a 105,400 dwt Aframax tanker built in 2011 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co. Ltd, Japan, from an unaffiliated third party seller for a total purchase price of $22 million. The vessel, the company’s fifth Aframax tanker, is expected to be delivered between November 15 and December 22, 2020, and will be renamed P. Yanbu.Upon delivery of the Kalamas, the cargo-carrying capacity of the company’s fleet will have increased by 23.9% to approximately 546,094 deadweight tons (dwt). The M/T Kalamas was built to high specification and has been retrofitted with a ballast water treatment system (BWTS), in compliance with the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.

Valles Orders New Tanker from SHI

The Hong Kong and Vancouver-based shipowner Valles Steamship has ordered a new 112,000 dwt crude oil tanker from South Korea’s Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering (SHIME).Ship set to be fitted with a scrubber and will enter the market before the end of 2020, said a release from Valles, which was founded by C.S. Koo in Shanghai as a family business in 1917."We take great pleasure in concluding a newbuilding contract with the esteemed yard and the we look forward to further strengthening their relationship with SHIME," said the statement.The newbuild Aframax will join seven other Aframaxes in Valles Steamship’s fleet. Other ships operated by the company include Panamax bulkers and medium and long range product tankers.

USS Ronald Reagan Departs for Sea Trials

The U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), departed Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) May 7. Ronald Reagan's crew shifted colors at 11:54 a.m. and made way to conduct sea trials in the final phase of the ship's selective restricted availability (SRA) maintenance period, which began January 10. "I am extremely proud of the Reagan crew's accomplishments up to this point of our SRA period," said Capt. Buzz Donnelly, commanding officer.

Venezuela Orders Crude Tankers from Itochu

According to a report from the Oil & Gas Journal, Itochu Corp. has won an order to supply four Aframax tankers to a subsidiary of Venezuela’s Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) and has commissioned Sumitomo Heavy Industries to build the vessels. Tsakos Energy Navigation Q2 Results

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited (TEN) (NYSE: TNP) reported results (unaudited) for the second quarter and first half of 2010. Revenues, net of voyage expenses and commissions, were $83.3 million in the second quarter of 2010 compared to $88.6 million in the second quarter of 2009 primarily reflecting a slightly smaller fleet. Despite improved rates for crude carriers, the Company's product carriers achieved lower rates than in the second quarter of 2009, as did its LNG carrier. On average, TEN deployed 45.0 vessels versus 46.0 vessels in the prior year quarter. Fleet utilization remained high at 97.8%, the same level as in the second quarter of 2009. The average daily time charter equivalent rate per vessel was $22,059 down from $22,890 in the 2009 second quarter.

TEN Accepts Aframax Tanker

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited announced the delivery and charter of the 105,000 dwt DNA-Aframax tanker Uraga Princess from Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan, the final newbuilding in a series of eight ordered in 2004. Upon delivery, the vessel entered a minimum 30-day repositioning voyage with the oil trading arm of a major financial institution.

Tsakos Delivery & Charter of Sapporo Princess

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited (NYSE: TNP) announced the delivery and charter of DNA-aframax tanker Sapporo Princess from Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan, the penultimate newbuilding in a series of eight ordered in 2004. The vessel was placed on an up to four month time-charter to a major international oil trader. The Sapporo Princess will replace the 2003-built conventional aframax tanker Marathon which will be delivered to its new owners at the end of next week. The $6.2m capital gain from this sale will be recorded in the second quarter of this year. Furthermore, the company announced the sale of the 1991-built panamax tanker Hesnes to an independent third party.

Delivery, Charter of Aframax Tanker Asahi Princess

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited (NYSE:TNP) announced the delivery and charter of DNA-aframax tanker Asahi Princess from Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan. The vessel was placed on a one-to-four month repositioning time-charter with a major international oil trader. Upon expiry of the charter, the vessel will be redelivered to its intended operating area, the mid-Atlantic basin. “We welcome the Asahi Princess into our fleet, the sixth DNA aframax tanker, in a series of eight that we signed with the Sumitomo yard in the summer of 2004,” said Mr. Nikolas P. Tsakos Reports Profits Q2 2009

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited (NYSE: TNP) reported results (unaudited) for the second quarter and first half of 2009. Revenues, net of voyage expenses and commissions, were $88.60 million in the second quarter of 2009 compared to $146.64 million in the comparable 2008 period reflecting the lower freight rate environment. TEN deployed on average 46.0 vessels versus 44.0 vessels in the prior year quarter. Fleet utilization remained high at 97.8% as compared with 97.4% in the second quarter of 2008. Tsakos Charter of DNA Aframax Tanker

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited (NYSE:TNP) announced the delivery of the double-hull DNA designed 105,000dwt Aframax tanker Ise Princess from Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan. The vessel is the fifth delivery in an eight vessel series. The company expects to take delivery of the remaining three vessels by May 2010. Ise Princess immediately commenced a repositioning time-charter for up to four months with a major international oil trader at a fixed rate. Upon conclusion of this charter, the vessel is expected to operate in the Mid-Atlantic basin. With the addition of this new time charter, TEN’s fixed employment for 2009 and 2010 is 64% and 44%, respectively.

Japanese Shipbuilders Sign Aveva Contracts

Aveva (LSE:AVV), supplier of engineering IT systems for the plant and marine industries, announced that several Japanese shipbuilders -- Namura Shipbuilding, Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering and Imabari Shipbuilding Group -- have signed contracts worth over $2.5m to extend their use of Aveva marine solutions. The contracts were made in the first half of Aveva’s financial year ending 30 September 2008. Aveva marine solutions were first used in Japan by Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in 1994. Kawasaki has since expanded the use of Aveva marine solutions to its commercial and naval yards. To date, there are more than twenty Japanese customers who actively subscribe to Aveva’s shipbuilding solutions.

Two Killed in Shipyard Accident

According to wire reports, two workers were killed and two others injured earlier this week after falling about 65 ft. to the ground when a 246-ton steel block fell over on a ship under construction in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture. The four were working on the construction of a 90,000-ton containership for a German client at a shipbuilding dock of IHI Marine United Inc., launched in 2002 via the partial merger of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. The accident took place shortly after 9 a.m., when they were trying to fix the steel block to the ship. The block -- 15 meters in height, 16 meters in width and 2.5 meters thick -- fell over the port side of the ship, throwing the four to the ground.

Fortum Newbuildings Will Get Wärtsilä Engines

Wärtsilä Corporation has received a contract to supply the complete power systems for two 14,000 tdw product/chemical tankers under construction for the Finnish energy group Fortum. The two tankers have been contracted at the Portuguese shipbuilder Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo, with delivery due in 2003. With a cargo capacity of 16,000 cu m, they are of 140 m length overall by 21.7 m breadth, and have a service speed of 16 knots. They are also being built to ice class 1A Super. Each Wärtsilä power system comprises a Wärtsilä 8L46 main engine, reduction gearbox with power take-off (PTO) drive, controllable-pitch propeller, and three generating sets, two driven by Wärtsilä 6L20 engines and one by a Wärtsilä 4L20 engine.
