Mississippi River Closes After Towboat Accident

The Coast Guard has closed the Upper Mississippi River on Sunday from mile marker 130 to 144, to all vessel traffic due to a towboat accident which resulted in one sunken barge and 6 others damaged. The towboat John Paul Eckstein, lost power and ran its 25 barge tow into a dock near mile marker 144, approximately 20 miles above St. Genevieve, MO. As a result of the accident, the tow broke apart and all 25 barges were set adrift. All of the barges, except one were recovered. The Coast Guard will reopen vessel traffic in the affected area upon location of the sunken barge and once the channel is cleared and safe for vessel traffic transit.

Response to Barge Breakaway Continues on the Mississippi

The U.S. Coast Guard continues to respond to an allision which occurred April 6 and resulted in a multiple-barge breakaway and two sunken barges on the Mississippi River near Thebes, Ill. The Army Corps of Engineers completed a survey of the navigational channel and reports the channel is clear. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Ohio Valley is allowing transit of the safety zone with no restrictions. Salvage operations for the sunken barge in the middle of the channel at mile marker 42 began Sunday. Weather initially delayed the salvage, but teams were able to recover the sunken barge and move it outside the channel, Thursday. Salvage operations are ongoing outside the channel.

Sunken Barge Salvage Stops Traffic on Chicago River

The U.S. Coast Guard said it is restricting vessel traffic on the Chicago River to allow for salvage of a sunken barge. All cargo has been removed from the sunken barge in the Chicago River between the Lake and Randolph Street bridges and divers are currently in the water to conduct a survey of the barge's hull. The barge has been secured so that a 50-foot clearance can allow for vessel traffic to transit. Once the divers complete their survey, the company intends to formulate a salvage plan to either move the barge to another location or lift it out of the water. Coast Guard assets are on scene to monitor vessel traffic while divers are in the water.

Sunken Barge Impedes Waterway Traffic Near Galveston

A barge sank east of the Galveston Causeway railroad bridge Tuesday, causing the U.S. Coast Guard to issue a safety zone and temporarily restrict traffic on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The restriction allows one-way and single-wide barges only, from mile marker 356 to mile marker 357. The owner of the sunken barge has contracted T & T salvage to remove the barge, which was being towed to be scrapped when it sank.

CG Restricts Hylebos Waterway Traffic

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Seattle has ordered the immediate closure, until further notice, of the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma, Wash., to all large, oceangoing vessels and restrictions through this waterway for tug, barge and all other boating traffic. The Coast Guard was notified that an abandoned and partially sunken barge named BMC-33 has drifted about 80 feet from shore into the 200 foot wide Hylebos Waterway channel. The barge severely narrows the channel and creates a collision hazard to vessel traffic. The temporary restricted area, known as a safety zone, is from the East 11th Street Bridge to the Hylebos Boat Haven/Lower Turning Basin. All large, oceangoing vessels 300 gross tons or greater are restricted from transiting through this safety zone.

Mississippi River Reopens to Vessel Traffic

MISSISSIPPI RIVER REOPENED TO VESSEL As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard reopened the Upper Mississippi River from mile marker 130 to 145 to vessel traffic. The river was closed to vessel traffic after the Marquette Transportation Lines towing vessel John Paul Eckstein, pushing 25 grain barges, suffered mechanical problems and struck an unused dock, causing the tow to break up and 1 barge to sink. The Coast Guard worked with U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and local maritime industry represetatives to determine the most efficient and safe plan to allow the transit of delayed vessels through the previously closed portion of river. Prior to the reopening, 21 vessels were delayed as a result of the river closure.

USCG Makes Change in Fort Pierce Inlet Safety Zone

The Coast Guard has made a change in the Fort Pierce Inlet safety zone Thursday afternoon. Recreational vessels with less than six-foot draft are now allowed to transit through the Fort Pierce Inlet safety zone upon receiving clearance from the on-scene representative. All other persons and vessels are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within any of the safety zone unless authorized by the Captain of the Port Miami or a designated representative.

Waterway Reopens after Barge Sinks

The U.S. Coast Guard has reopened a portion of the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge after it was partially closed due to a barge that sank Monday. A portion of the river had been closed to commercial deep-draft traffic after a deck barge sank November 11. The search for the sunken barge was conducted using sonar surveys by vessels from the Army Corps of Engineers as well as contracted vessels. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, the barge was found outside the navigable channel, and that portion of the Mississippi River was reopened to all traffic. The Coast Guard is working with the owner of the barge to develop a salvage plan for the safe removal of the barge. No pollution or injuries have been reported, and the Coast Guard is continuing its investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

Barge Shuts Down Intracoastal Waterway

A partially sunken barge blocked traffic in the Intracoastal Waterway on January 24, halting shipments and costing businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ms. Angel, the giant barge carrying a full load of crushed limestone, began sinking earlier that morning. It was not known when the canal would be reopened. Chemical and petroleum industries, as well as industries transporting dry cargo, including grain and commodities, could be affected because of the blocked waterway. The Coast Guard was notified of the 264-foot sinking barge at approximately 5:15 a.m. Tuesday. The barge rested at mile marker 171, about a mile west of the Forked Island Bridge. By late morning, the traffic was stopped in that reach of the canal.

Sunken Barges to be Monitored

The Department of Ecology (Ecology) and U.S. Coast Guard agreed on a plan to continue monitoring two sunken barges in Elliott Bay, after divers found no leaking oil yesterday. A diving team hired by Ecology made three dives to inspect the unidentified barges, located a half-mile off Seattle's Magnolia Bluff on a slope under 80 to 105 feet of water. Ecology received a report about the wrecks late last month from the People for Puget Sound environmental organization, which has been working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to remove abandoned fishing gear from the depths of Puget Sound. Divers from that project reported seeing "burps" of oil rising from a barge off Magnolia Bluff.

Inland Salvage Inc.recently completed the removal of approximately 1000 tons of structural scrap steel from a sunken hopper barge and subsequent salvage of the barge which had been obstructing a loading dock on the Mississippi River near LaPlace, LA. Immediately upon being notified by the dock's owner that Inland Salvage Inc. (ISI) had been appointed as the salvor, ISI responded to the sinking of the 195' hopper barge laden with 1,000 tons of scrap metal when the barge sank.

USCG Searching for 2 Trapped Under Sunken Barge

The Coast Guard, along with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Mississippi County, Ark. Sheriff's Department, are searching for two people in the water near a sunken barge in Hickman Landing Wednesday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received a report at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday that two people became trapped beneath a barge that flipped and sank in the Mississippi River. Sector Lower Mississippi River directed the launch of a 25-foot Response Boat — Small boatcrew to search for the two men along with joint agency boatcrews. The Mississippi River is closed from mile marker 815 to mile marker 825 to aid in the search efforts. “This reminds us of the dangers mariners face while working on the river,” said Capt.

Argo Response Completed

The response effort to remove a hazardous cargo from the 104-year-old sunken tank barge Argo in Lake Erie officially ended Monday afternoon with the demobilization of all remaining equipment. Contracted by the U.S. Coast Guard as part of a Unified Command effort, salvors T&T Salvage recovered the highly toxic cargo from the 1911-built Argo, which sank in 1937 laden with a cargo of benzol that contained a high percentage of the carcinogen benzene. A total of 33,475 gallons of cargo and water mixture were removed from the vessel.

Crews continue to respond to and investigate a reported discharge of an unknown substance from the site of a sunken barge near Kelleys Island Shoal in Lake Erie Thursday. The unified command, consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Ohio EPA, continues to take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. During dive operations Wednesday, a pinhole-sized leak was detected in one of the cargo tanks and was successfully secured by the dive team.

Cargo Removal Ops Begin on Sunken Barge

CHICAGO, IL – The process of removing the Clarified Slurry Oil that remains on board the EMC423 barge has commenced today. This operation will be closely monitored by the Coast Guard and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that it is safe, efficient, and will not result in further pollution. While this lightering operation is underway, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal will be closed to all vessel traffic between the Cicero Avenue Bridge and Chicago Belt Railway Bridge so as to not interfere with the cargo removal process. The Coast Guard has been working in partnership with facilities along the canal that rely on shipments of products and materials by barge to minimize the economic effect of this closure.

Crews continue to investigate a reported discharge of an unknown substance from the site of a sunken barge near Kelley's Island Shoal in Lake Erie, Monday. ASA Respond to Suken Tugboat

Two members of the American Salvage Association (ASA) salvaged a sunken tugboat in Port Arthur, Texas on December 31, 2007. The 600-ton capacity derrick barge, owned by one ASA member, and another 700-ton capacity derrick barge, owned by another ASA member were used to make a tandem lift of the 105-foot sunken tugboat. The two companies initially responded to the sunken vessel with a salvage support barge used for diving survey and rigging operations. Once the diving survey and salvage rigging phases were complete, one derrick barge was connected to the bow rigging and the second derrick barge, which was mobilized from New Orleans, Louisiana for this Salvage effort, was connected to the stern rigging.

Two Missing after Ship Sinks in South China Sea

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said that a ship sank in South China Sea on Friday, 11 out of 13 crew were rescued and two remained missing. According to the survivors, there were 13 crew on board the sunken vessel. Two persons are still unaccounted for. MPA has been providing navigational broadcasts to vessels in the vicinity to report any sightings of persons overboard and to navigate with caution in the vicinity of the incident. USCG Investigating Unknown Substance in Lake Erie

The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a discharge of an unknown substance from the site of a sunken barge near Kelley's Island Shoal in Lake Erie, Sunday. Due to the report, the Coast Guard has established a safety zone 3 nautical miles east of Kelley's Island Shoal extending 1,000 feet around position 41-38'21"N, 082-29'35"W. Friday evening crews at Marine Safety Unit Toledo, Ohio, received a report from the Cleveland Underwater Explorers, of a leak of an unknown substance emanating from the barge and an odor of solvent, but they did not observe the leak underwater.

Salvage Plan Considered For Elk River Tug

The Coast Guard, in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy's Supervisor of Salvage, is reviewing a plan submitted by the owners and contracted salvors of a sunken tug and a barge impeding vessel traffic in the Elk River in the Upper Chesapeake Bay. The tug and barge, which sank in the shipping channel following a collision with a freighter, have caused the adjacent C&D Canal to remain closed to all vessel traffic pending their safe removal. Four men remain missing following the incident. The salvage plan, submitted by Norfolk Dredging Marine, the sunken tug Swift's owners, and Ellsworth Salvage, the contractor, must adequately address a number of safety, environmental, and navigational considerations in order to receive the agencies' authorization to begin operations.

The 600 ton capacity D/B BIG T, owned by T&T MARINE SALVAGE of Galveston, Texas, and the 700 ton capacity D/B CAPPY BISSO, owned by BISSO MARINE of Houston, Texas, were used to make a tandem lift of a 105-ft. sunken tugboat in Port Arthur, Texas. Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger

Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. The build contract includes an option for a second ATB. Once built and deployed, Crowley will operate the ATB under a long-term charter with Alaska-based Petro Star Inc.…
