Wind Power Seen Surging as Custom Barges Cut Cost

Offshore wind-power producers from Dong Energy A/S to RWE AG are building custom ships at record rates to reduce the cost of the technology which is  three times as pricey as electricity from coal plants. As many as 20 vessels, some with movable legs which reach the seafloor, will come onto the market in the next few years, reducing chartering costs of as much as 200,000 euros ($261,000) a day, said Marc Seidel, an offshore engineer at Suzlon Energy Ltd., which supplies turbines to Germany’s RWE. A lack of specialized installation ships has forced companies to hire barges designed for oil exploration, holding up work at projects such as EON AG’s Robin Rigg wind farm off Scotland’s western coast.

Alstom Wind Sees Turbine Growth in Europe Offshore Bids

Alstom SA, the third-largest power-equipment maker, expects higher sales for its wind turbines this year and next, buoyed by growing demand in Brazil and offshore bids in Europe. “We’ve improved all our financial indicators this fiscal year,” ending March, compared with last year, including sales, order intake and operational performance, Alstom renewable unit chief Jerome Pecresse said in a March 15 interview. “We’re seeing strong growth of the Brazilian market this year,” Pecresse said at company headquarters near Paris. “We’re also seeing the pickup of the offshore wind industry in Europe,” which should account for “several gigawatts of new installs per year” within five years. Alstom entered the wind market through the purchase of Spain’s Ecotecnia in 2007.

Hamburg Leads Foreign Trade with India

A joint delegation consisting of representatives of Hamburg’s port-related industries and the marketing organization for Finland’s transport and logistics sector, Straight-way Finland, visited the Indian port city of Mumbai this week. At a workshop organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) and the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK), Axel Mattern from HHM, Thomas Lütje and Bernt Wegener from HHLA Container Terminals GmbH, and Werner Schulze-Freyberg from Polzug Intermodal GmbH highlighted the strong trade relations between Hamburg and the Indian sub-continent in their presentations and then detailed the range of services available for the container-handling and intermodal transport segments.

Konecranes Wins Orders from Suzlon Energy

In October 2007, Konecranes received orders for the delivery of 173 cranes from Suzlon Energy Ltd in India. The orders include industrial and process cranes, as well as a five-year maintenance contract for the equipment.
