China's 'Smart' Ship Debuts in Shanghai
China's first "smart" ship embedded with a domestically-developed intelligent navigation system made its debut in Shanghai, according to official media Xinhua. China Daily also reported that the world's first smart ship, developed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has started its first trial voyage in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province. Christened as 'Great Intelligence' (Great Smart) 179-meter-long ship is 32-meters-wide and 15-meters-high, with a maximum loading capacity of 38,800 tonnes.
LR Presents CES Descriptive Notes to China Smart Ship
Great Intelligence, the first China smart ship, was presented with Lloyd's Register (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive notes. Wärtsilä, CSSC Ink BWMS Manufacturing Deal
Wärtsilä has signed a manufacturing license agreement with Jiujiang Precision Measuring Technology Research Institute, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), based in Jiujiang, China. The two-way agreement provides CSSC with access to technology and the rights to manufacture the Wärtsilä Aquarius EC Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) under license for applications to CSSC customers. In return, Wärtsilä gains access to CSSC's new manufacturing facility, thereby further supporting supply and demand needs for the Wärtsilä BWMS direct to Wärtsilä customers.
Finnish Research Vessel Undergoes Propulsion Refit
The 28-year-old research vessel Aranda is the first Finnish vessel to be modernized with a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. The 59.2 m long and 13.8 m wide ice-going vessel is to be fitted with a 3 MW generator. While the conventional shafting is being retained, an electrically powered SCHOTTEL Pump Jet (SPJ) of type SPJ 132 RD will be installed as a new auxiliary propulsion unit. It features an input power of 400 kW, is installed flush with the bottom of the research vessel and provides maximum thrust over the full 360° range, with no resistance, even in shallow water.
HK Shipowner CSSC Orders Mega-Container Ships
Waigaoqiao-controlled Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry has signed a shipbuilding contract with CSSC Shipping (Hong Kong) to build three 16,000 TEU ships, the largest ever built by Chinese yards, reports China Logistics Portal. Jointly designed by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and CSSC-affilated Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), two of the ships will be built at Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry and one will be built at Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. Bowles Named Director of Donald L. Blount & Associates
Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox, Inc. has appointed Jeffrey B. Bowles as Director of its Chesapeake, Va. division, Donald L. Blount & Associates (DLBA). Bowles joined DLBA in 2001 as a Webb Institute Naval Architect and earned a master's degree in Marine Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. He was promoted to DLBA Technical Director in 2011. Bowles is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Virginia, Florida and New York, and is a certified Project Management Professional.
CSSC Wins 2 Survey Ships Order
On June 16th, Shanghai Shipyard Co., Ltd. under CSSC and COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard received 3 survey ships order. The 3 ships include 2 comprehensive physical survey ships and 1 comprehensive geophysical survey ship. The 2D six cable physical survey ship designed by the No. 701 Research Institute of CSIC and built by Shanghai Shipyard Co., Ltd. is mainly used for the investigation operation of 2D seismic. Wison, CCS Partner on China’s FSRU Standards
Wison Offshore & Marine announced it will collaborate with China Classification Society (CCS) Wuhan Rules & Research Institute on various fronts of floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) storage and re-gasification facility (FSRU) developments in China under a strategic cooperation agreement. China to Build its First Luxury Cruise Ship
Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, subsidiary China CSSC Holdings Ltd is about to establish a cruise liner development company in Shanghai along with Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd and two ship design institutes, says a report in China Post. The new firm will undertake research, design and development of cruise liners and related facilities. The joint venture will be registered in China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone in Pudong New Area, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.
Shanghai Shipyard Won Bid for Two Survey Vessels
Shanghai Shipyard has won bids to build two multipurpose survey vessels for two geological survey institutes. The shipyard is an affiliate of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Qingdao Marine Geological Survey Institute and Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey Institute have each ordered one geological survey vessel at the yard. Financial details and the delivery dates of the newbuildings were not disclosed. CSSC said the bids were won after fierce competitions with more than 10 shipyards competing including Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry and Cosco Shipyard.
Baosteel Invests in China's Shipbuilding Industry
The Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp., China's largest steel producer, is to cooperate with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) to construct the country's largest shipbuilding base. According to an agreement signed last Friday, the Baosteel and CSSC will jointly invest 10 billion yuan (1.25 billion U.S. dollars) to build the No. 1 and No. 2 production lines at the Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Base, located at the estuary of the Yangtze River. Baosteel will take a 35-percent stake and CSSC a 65-percent stake in the two production lines, which are designed to manufacture ships with 4.5 million dead weight tons (dwt) annually.
CSSC to Build Research Vessels
China's government controlled China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) is going beyond building navy vessels and making advanced scientific research ships, Xinhua reported. CSSC has been focussing on defence sector till now. It was the largest supplier of surface combatants to the Chinese Navy, said the report. CSSC has been using its expertise in the research and development of naval hardware to construct high-tech civilian ships, encouraged by government measures to boost transfer of defense-related technologies to civilian and business sectors, said company officials.

CSSC, Wärtsilä Form Electrical & Automation Joint Venture
Technology group Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed a new joint venture company agreement. The new joint venture, to be known as CSSC Wärtsilä Electrical & Automation Co Ltd (CWE&A), will focus on the growing Chinese electrical and automation (E&A) market, especially for high-tech ship applications. The joint venture company is expected to be fully operational before the middle of 2017. China is a growing market within the high-tech ships segment, and Chinese yards are increasingly active in newbuild projects for high-tech and high-added value ships.
Boksa Wins Research Vessel Design Contract
Boksa Marine Design informs it has signed a contract with a Florida-based oceanography institute for the design and engineering of a new 78-foot coastal class research vessel. The new boat will replace an existing vessel which has been used as a floating laboratory for scientists and students studying in the waterways of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas for more than 35 years. “The vessel has a rich history of scientific education and discovery here in Florida, and we hope the new boat will continue the institute’s ongoing mission,” said Nick Boksa, president of Boksa Marine Design.

CSSC to Restructure
The primary contractor for China's naval force China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) is preparing a major asset reorganization involving its two subsidiaries, reported China Daily. The companies have halted stock trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange The announcement said that whether the reforms take place would be decided in the next 10 trading days. CSSC Holdings Ltd and CSSC Offshore and Marine Engineering Co Ltd both acted upon the notices from their parent company about the potential asset reform by suspending their stock trading. The CSSC group is the parent of three listed companies.
China to Deliver LNG Ship
According to Xinhua said that the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship made in China will be delivered in September. With a capacity of 47,200 cubic meters is under construction by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), China's top and the world's third largest shipping group. Another four such LNG vessels also under construction would be delivered in the end of this year while the research and development for LNG ships with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters is underway, sources with the CSSC said.
Wärtsilä to Divest its Shares in Two-stroke JV
Wärtsilä announced that it will divest its shares in the Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD), the joint venture company established for manufacturing large low-speed marine diesel engines. Wärtsilä's shares in the joint venture will be transferred to the current majority shareholder, Qingdao Qiyao Linshan Power Development Co. Ltd., a company fully owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. The agreement was signed today in Beijing, China. Wärtsilä said the value of the transaction is not significant, and the deal will have a positive effect on Wärtsilä's continuing operations but the impact is not significant. The closing of the transaction is subject to the required regulatory approvals.
GLMRI to Receive $2M in Federal Funding
The Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute (GLMRI), a joint effort by the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the University of Minnesota Duluth, will receive $2 million in federal funding. This is the second year of funding for the GLMRI collaboration, which now totals $2.75 million. Congressman James L. Oberstar (MN-8) secured the original authorization for the initiative, and Congressman Obey secured the funding in the recently-passed transportation appropriations bill. During trials the correct measurement of metocean conditions is crucial for reproducibility, performance prediction and to avoid disputes between different stakeholders. MARIN believes its new C-DRONE can make it much easier to obtain accurate measurement data. MARIN has several systems in use to measure wave height and period. The most direct and accurate way to measure the wave characteristics is the use of a wave buoy. Yet, a buoy is rarely requested during trials because the retrieval process requires a separate support boat that can easily manoeuvre and pick up the buoy.
