Trump Administration's Infrastructure Plan Taking Shape

The Trump administration is finalizing its long-awaited infrastructure plan, which would push most of the financing of projects to private investment and state and local taxpayers, according to sources familiar with the proposal taking shape. China Leads Shipbuilding World-Wide

According to a report from The National, at China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) yard in Tanggu, a coastal town an hour by fast train from Beijing, the BBC Fuji is taking shape, a 390.5-ft multi-purpose heavy-lifter vessel. CSIC is China's biggest shipbuilder and China makes more ships than any other country in the world. In the first six months of last year, the dragon economy delivered vessels totaling 22.7 million deadweight tonnage (DWT), compared with 18.3 million DWT for the second-placed South Korea. American Cruise Ship Takes Shape

The much-watched progress of two new cruise vessels under construction for AmericanClassic Voyages at Ingalls Shipbuilding are quickly taking shape, at least in the area of equipment selection. The ships are destined for Hawaii inter-island service, and will be the largest U.S. flag cruise ships ever built, and the first large passenger vessels built in the U.S. in more than 40 years. The project has generated an understandable amount of interest in the world shipbuilding community, and competition to secure an order on the ship has been fierce. Last month it was divulged that the Mermaid podded propulsion system was selected to propel the first two vessels, with an option for a third. Each ship will be equipped with two Mermaid propulsors, each with a rated power of 12.5 MW.

The Chinese Navy has released the first photographs of what many military observers believe is the 'Liaoning' aircraft carrier battle group reports Xinhua. The photo (reproduced here) shows the Liaoning sailing in company with several battleships, submarines and military aircraft  The Navy did not disclose when and where the picture was taken. The carrier has successfully carried out 37 days of tests and training exercises in the South China Sea and has now returned to a People's Liberation Army 's naval base in Qingdao.

AEP MEMCO LLC Doubles Headquarters

AEP MEMCO, a dry cargo barge operator will be growing its business in a new Class A office building emerging at Chesterfield Village in Chesterfield, Mo. AEP MEMCO LLC will more that double the size of its headquarters by taking two floors in the five-story, 100,600-sq. ft. Central Park Square Office I being developed by Sachs Properties. AEP MEMCO, based at Chesterfield Village since 1995, will occupy 42,000 square feet when the new building opens next year. The start of Central Park I marks the 40th anniversary of Chesterfield Village and opens the next chapter – Downtown Chesterfield – in the 1,500-acre development. Downtown Chesterfield will include a second six-story, 150,000-square-foot office structure and four pedestrian-oriented retail buildings totaling 26,000 square feet.

Gate Installation Begins at Panama Canal Expansion

The installation of the gates for the new locks of the Panama Canal began today on the Atlantic side of the waterway, the Panama Canal Authority  (ACP) reported. “This is a very important milestone for the Expansion Program,” said Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano. The gate will be located in lock head two in the new locks on the Atlantic side. The installation of the gate began early in the morning and is expected to be completed in the next couple of days. The steel gates are moved using self-propelled motorized wheel transporters (SPMTs) with more than 400 wheels each.

Rigdon Continues With Ten Boat Program

On December 7, 2007, the fourth in a 10 boat series of GPA-654 class diesel-electric platform supply vessels for Rigdon Marine, the Slam Dunk, was delivered alongside Bollinger’s facility in Port Fourchon. At the same time the fifth and sixth of the series were taking shape at Bollinger’s Lockport, La., facility on Bayou Lafourche.

First of Five ATBs Nearing Completion at Penn Maritime

With delays in getting parts for the assembly there was a hold up in the delivery of the first of Penn Maritime’s new tugs from Thoma-Sea Boatbuilders. Now the first of five, M/V Skipjack, is nearing completion and will deliver in May. In a near assembly-line production process the second vessel, M/V Coho, will launch sometime in May and deliver in August. The other tugs are already taking shape and will follow on a regular schedule. Following its delivery the Skipjack will travel to New Orleans to meet up with a 90,000-barrel barge that will come down from its builders at Corn Island Shipyard on the Ohio River in Indiana. Cummins QSK60 engines turning 104 by 112-inch skewed props in Nautican Nozzles with shutter rudders power the 4000 hp Penn tugs. The coupling system is a JAK-400.

Costa Serena Takes Shape in Italy

Costa Crociere announced the name of its new ship, which will join the fleet in May 2007. The ship was named Costa Serena during a ceremony of the laying of the first building block for the ship in the dock at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyards in Genoa. This first block, an aft section, measures 55.7 ft. (17 m) long and 72 ft. (22 m) wide, weighing around 500 tons. Like sister ship Costa Concordia, which is currently under construction at Sestri Ponente and is due for delivery in July 2006, Costa Serena will be Italy’s largest cruise ship: 112,000 gt, 951 ft. (290 m) long with 1500 cabins for 3780 passengers. Costa Crociere has invested more than $1 billion on the building of the Costa Serena and Costa Concordia.

Tucked into a sheltered cove on the northwest corner of Batam Island, Nongsa Jay Buana Shipyard is approached via a short causeway and a road built into the reddish earth of Indonesia’s Batam Island. Seventh Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) takes shape as Lockheed Martin team lays keel of the future 'USS Detroit'. The event was part of a time-honored keel laying ceremony that took place at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Wisconsin. The Lockheed Martin-led LCS team includes ship builder Marinette Marine Corporation, a Fincantieri company, naval architect Gibbs & Cox, as well as hundreds of domestic and international suppliers, including approximately 30 small businesses in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Mayor of Herne Inaugurates the Hackforth Academy

Workshop and seminar rooms have been developed on two floors of the former residence of the VULKAN owners. On Wednesday, July 3, 2013, the Mayor of the city of Herne and the owners and Executive Management of the VULKAN Group cut the blue ribbon to inaugurate the Hackforth Academy, the new advanced training center. More than 30 guests from the sectors of politics, economics and science gathered to attend the festive inaugural celebrations. The Hackforth Academy is the new internal advanced training institute of the VULKAN Group that is situated at the registered office of the Herne business.

Massive Korean Containerport Takes Shape

Pusan Newport Co, Ltd. (PNC), scheduled to be the largest single terminal in Korea, has taken delivery of its first terminal equipment. The double cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry Crane marks the commencement of many more such deliveries. This arrival is the first of a total order of 81 units that are being constructed at Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Company’s facility in Korea. The RMGC’s handle 9 rows with a stacking height of 6 containers and a lifting capacity of 65 LT. The semi-automated cranes will be equipped with GPS and trailer positioning systems along with safety features for the protection of trucks. PNC is scheduled for opening in January of 2006 with the first three container berths of 350 m each.

Series of 30m Tugs From Far East Shipyards

In an efficient near-assembly-line process at Far East Shipyard in Sibu a series of 29-meter tugs are being built and delivered to an Indonesian owner, Pte. Arpeni Pratama Ocean Line Tbk.. The first of these boats, Cigading, was delivered in mid-January. By late March, the second boat, Paiton, was ready for delivery. A third was taking shape on the yard’s ways while the steel for the fourth vessel was being cut nearby. The United Ship Design hulls, with their 9-meter beams 4.267-meter molded depth (29.53x14), feature the double-chined hulls common to many boats built in Sarawak. The shafts are encased in skeg-like pieces that serve both as shaft struts and protection when working in shallow water. A raised fo’c’sle and bilge keels contribute to good sea-keeping abilities.

Strategic Marine’s Compact Crew Boat

With literally dozens of their high-speed vessels already working, Australian-based Strategic Marine continues production in several shipyards. A recent visit to Strategic Marine’s Singapore shipyard revealed their compact 91.8-ft 23-ft version ready for work while three sisters were taking shape in the building shed. With a molded depth of 9.88 ft, the Peacock Satu has capacity for up to 60 passengers and accommodation for eight crewmembers. Tankage is provided for 20,000 liters of fuel and 5,000 liters of water.

Aircraft Carrier Funding Approved

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) said that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has received a $43.4 million modification to a previously awarded contract from the U.S. Navy for purchase of materials for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship in the Navy's newest class of carriers. The funds awarded to NNS will be used to purchase major, long-lead-time equipment, such as the ship's elevator machinery and large pumps.

Diverse Projects’ Latest Vessel

Build Project 08 is currently under construction at Profab Central Engineering Ltd in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The hull was successfully rolled over in October, and the superstructure is now taking shape. Stage two of the program, interior, paintwork and finishing details will later take place in Whangarei, New Zealand. BP08’s sleek lines were designed by Craig Loomes Design Group. The 103.3 ft passagemaker is being built to Germanischer Lloyd 100 A5 class and New Zealand MSA survey. With Twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT 600HP engines, she will cruise at 12.5 knots.

U.S. Navy Funds Fabrication of the USS Omaha

With the U.S. Navy funding construction of the future USS Omaha (LCS 12), Austal USA, the vessel’s builder, invited the citizens of Omaha to join in as their naval namesake takes shape on the Mobile, Alabama, waterfront. The next USS Omaha will be an Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a highly-utilizable, 3,000 ton modular naval combatant. This aluminum trimaran will be built by an Austal USA-led team, which will support the U.S. fleet as America confronts new 21st Century threats at sea. Austal USA President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Rella welcomed the opportunity to reach out to the citizens of Omaha. “The ship we are going to build has some big shoes to fill,“ said Rella.

Demolished Russian Nuclear Submarine Reactors Find Safe Storage

A huge building containing equipment for dealing with the whole cycle of radioactive waste management is taking shape on the coast of the Barents Sea. Roofing and façade are finished now, and remaining inner engineering systems are being installed, reports the 'Barents Observer'. The complex in the Saida Bay will deal with all kinds of radioactive scrap from the huge reactor compartments of decommissioned nuclear submarines to contaminated metal parts from both the navy and Russia’s fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers.

China's $40b Maritime Silk Road Shaping Up

China's $40 billion fund to finance its most ambitious global plan - the Silk Roads and Maritime Silk Road is moving forward steadily as its management team has taken shape. China has appointed top officials to manage the fund. A team headed by Wang Yanzhi, an official with China's foreign exchange regulator, has been formed to formally operate the fund. People's Bank of China (PBOC) assistant governor Jin Qi will be the fund's chief executive and Zhu Surong, governor of PBOC's Urumqi branch in Xinjiang, has been appointed board member of the fund.
