From the Navy News Service 1918 - Naval aviators of Marine Day Squadron 9 make the first raid-in-force for the Northern Bombing Group in World War I, when they bombed a German railroad at Thielt Rivy, Belgium. 1920 - The obsolete battleship Indiana (BB 1) is sunk in Tangier Sound, in the Chesapeake Bay. 1962 - A U.S. reconnaissance plane photographs a Soviet nuclear missile site under construction at San Cristobal, 100 miles west of Havana.

MedPort Tangier Cranes to Reach APM Soon

The first group of three, of a total of 12 advanced remotecontrolled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, has departed China for delivery on February 15 to the new APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, Morocco terminal. Manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai, the super post-Panamax cranes will be able to accommodate 20,000 TEU vessels, giving the facility an annual container throughput capacity of five million TEUs. “Our goal is to use proven technology to create highproductivity for our clients on one of the world’s most strategically important trade lanes on the Strait of Gibraltar…

Sharpeye Keeps Watch on Chesapeake Bay

Kelvin Hughes, a global supplier of surveillance and navigation systems, announced that it has recently supplied two SharpEye Solid State X Band surveillance radars to the Maryland Natural Resources Police (MPRP), to provide additional coverage around protected oyster beds. The SharpEye  radars are key sensors in the MNRP Maritime Law Enforcement Information Network (MLEIN), whose mission is to secure the 3,100 miles of Maryland coastline. The system was launched in the autumn of 2013, with the first detection of illegal activity taking place shortly after.

CMA CGM Rearranges its Services

The CMA CGM Group announced the reshuffling of its services from Europe and Med to West Africa which will allow the Group to adapt to the market and serve the heart of Africa by Through Bill of lading (TBL) to land lock countries. CMA CGM is pleased to announce the PC Weekly service improvement with the insertion of UK and Nigeria call in the rotation. The first voyage will start on December 14, 2013 with M/V Hammonia Antofagasta vge 8D001S. The first voyage will commence on December 13, 2013 with M/V Spero vge 8E001S.

UASC Boosts West Africa Services

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has launched two new West Africa services, WAF2 and WAF3, to enhance schedule reliability and cater to growing demand. The new services, effective September 2015, will operate in addition to UASC’s existing WAF1 service. Lars Christiansen, Chief Trade Officer at UASC commented, “In addition to reduced transit times and enhanced schedule reliability, the new services are designed to improve connections between West Mediterranean and West Africa enabling our customers globally to avail of new opportunities.

Hamburg Süd Extends WAMS Service to Europe

As of February 2011 and subject to obtaining regulatory approval, Hamburg Süd will extend the WAMS service which up to now connected US West Coast, West Coast Mexico and West Cost Central America with the hub in Cartagena. The extended service which henceforth includes Tangier and ports in North Europe will deploy ten vessels of 1,700 TEU nominal capacity of which Hamburg Süd will provide eight and the remaining two will be provided by CCNI. The complete port rotation is as follows: Long Beach – Oakland – Seattle – Vancouver – Oakland – Long Beach – Manzanillo (Mexico) – Lazaro Cardenas – Puerto Quetzal – Cartagena – Tangier – Rotterdam – Tilbury – Hamburg – Le Havre – Cartagena – Puerto Quetzal – Lazaro Cardenas – Long Beach.

Morocco to Get First Automated Container Terminal

Port operator APM Terminals to develop a new transshipment terminal in Tangier, Morocco with an annual capacity of five million TEUs. APM Terminals MedPort Tangier will become operational in 2019, serving multiple trades and will be the first automated terminal in Africa. The 30-year concession of APM Terminals MedPort Tangier will complement the current operations of the existing APM Terminals Tangier facility. APM Terminals has been named as the operator of a new container transshipment terminal at the Tanger Med 2 port complex.

USCG Crews Work to Break Ice In Mid-Atlantic

The crews of the Coast Guard Cutters Capstan, Cleat and Chock are working this winter to break ice and maintain navigable waterways from the Delaware River, through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, down to Tangier Island, Virginia. The crew of the Baltimore-based Chock traveled to Tangier Island to break ice and aid residents by delivering groceries and medical supplies. While assisting Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads, another crew was needed to take over the Sector Baltimore ice-breaking mission.

OPDR Shuffles TANCAS Service

OPDR has updated its established TANCAS service, connecting two Moroccan ports with three ports in Northern Europe. Starting on June 21 in Rotterdam, the revised service offers improved transit times while maintaining high schedule integrity. The TANCAS service links the two major Moroccan ports Tangier and Casablanca to the top 3 European ports, namely Rotterdam, Hamburg and Antwerp. OPDR will thus offer attractive possibilities for customers who require a reliable and direct connection between the above-mentioned ports.

CMA CGM Launches Morocco Express

The CMA CGM Group, a leader in container shipping, is launching an innovative offer to connect Morocco more quickly to Europe: Morocco Express 1/2/3. This service is an extremely competitive alternative to road transport transiting through Spain thanks to its reliability and to the reduction of the environmental footprint. The first departures are scheduled simultaneously on 21 October in Tangiers and Marseille with 3 different rotations for optimized service. 30 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers for APM Terminals Tangier

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract with APM Terminals to deliver 30 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers with high level of automation readiness as well as the related service and support to the customer's MedPort Terminal in Tangier, Marocco. The order was booked into Cargotec's 2016 fourth quarter order intake and the delivery is estimated to be completed by the end of 2018. This is Kalmar's biggest single order for horizontal transportation to date. The Tangier-Med 2 port is a greenfield transshipment terminal that is scheduled to be opened in 2019.

APM to Operate High Tech Tangier Terminal

The world's third largest port operator APM Terminals said it will invest 758 million euros ($858.3 million) in a new transhipment terminal in Tangier, Morocco, that will be the first automated terminal in Africa. The new container terminal will have an annual capacity of five million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU), and APM Terminals has the right to operate the port for 30 years. APM Terminals, a unit of Denmark's shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk, is currently operating a port facility in Tangier that handled 1.7 million TEUs in 2015. A.P.

APM Terminals Opens New Terminal in Morocco

APM Terminals Tangier, S.A. and the Akwa Group, a Casablanca, Morocco-based partner have announced the opening of Morocco’s newest container terminal to serve the global trade in Morocco and the Western Mediterranean market. Located on one of the most important shipping arteries, the terminal will offer importers and exporters a new gateway to world markets. Over 200 vessels a day pass through the Straits of Gibraltar as they transit on north-south and east-west liner trade routes. Shipping lines will benefit from Tangier’s direct access to the main shipping lane, a deepwater port capable of handling the largest container ships in the world, the newest, most advanced container handling equipment and APM Terminals global best operational practices.

Hamburg Süd, MSC fuse Med – S. America East Coast Services

In view of continuous poor trading conditions and replacing its current service set up, effective from mid January 2012 Hamburg Süd and MSC will restructure their services between the Mediterranean and South America East Coast. The two currently separate services will be fused into one common service that will be operated by eight vessels of 5,900 TEU nominal capacity. Of those, Hamburg Süd is to provide initially one vessel and MSC seven vessels. Valencia – Gioia Tauro – Livorno – Genoa – Fos – Barcelona – Valencia – Suape – Rio de Janeiro – Santos – Buenos Aires – Montevideo –Rio Grande – Navegantes – Itapoá – Santos – Rio de Janeiro –  Suape – Tangier – Valencia.

Containership Cap Cleveland inaugurated a new service offering freight connections between US Pacific Northwest and Mediterranean ports when she docked recently at the Port of Portalnd, to be greeted by port officials and container terminal managers from Philippine-based International Container Services Inc. Hamburg Süd offers new and more regular calls to Mediterraneon ports as well as feeder connections to the Far East, Middle East, Indian Ocean, Latin America and West Africa.

CMA CGM Launches Direct Service to Black Sea

In line with its strategy for the development of short lines in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, the CMA CGM Group has rolled out the Black Sea Med Express service, which connects the major countries around the Black Sea (Turkey, Romania and Ukraine) to Algeria and Morocco. The service will be CMA CGM's first to offer a weekly connection between the main ports of the Black Sea and Aegean Sea with the North of Morocco (Tangier and Casablanca) and Algeria (Annaba) in order to develop the activity between The Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea with short lines.

NileDutch Launches US East Coast to West Africa Service

NileDutch, the container carrier specializing in West Africa, is setto introduce a new service to link the East Coast of the U.S. with West Africa and Europe. The rotation will start in New York and the service will run every nine days. The first vessel, the MV Cafer Dede will sail on February 16, 2016. According to the shipper, the new development aims to meet the growing demand from exporters in the East Coast of the U.S. for better access to their markets in West Africa. The new service will be operated by NileDutch in cooperation with Turkon Line.
