Tanzania Inks Deals with DP World to Operate Dar es Salaam Port Berths

Tanzania on Sunday signed agreements with Dubai state-owned ports operator DP World to operate part of the Dar es Salaam port for 30 years, a deal that has previously been opposed by Tanzania opposition and rights groups.Plasduce Mbossa, director general of state-owned Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) which currently manages the port, said DP World will lease and operate four of the 12 berths at the country's largest port.Dar es Salaam also serves landlocked nations in east and southern Africa like Uganda…

TPA: SCHOTTEL Chosen for Tugboat Propulsion

SCHOTTEL has secured a contract with Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Hong Kong, for the supply of propulsion units for a total of four azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs. Each of the new vessels ordered by Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) will be equipped with two SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers.Three of the four tugs will each be equipped with a pair of SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers type SRP 460 featuring fixed-pitch propellers measuring 2.60 m in diameter and each driven by a 2,210 kW diesel engine at 750 rpm. This configuration will enable a bollard pull of 70 tonnes.

SECO Secures Order to Deliver Three Pilot Boats

Southern Engineering Co. Ltd (SECO), based in Kenya, won a contract from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to build and deliver three pilot boats.Designed to specification of naval architecture firm Southerly Designs, the boats will be 20-m long, 3-m deep with a 1.7-m draft.Built in steel with an aluminum superstructure and classed by BV, the deckhouse will include seating for two crew and up to 12 passengers, while accommodation for three crew will be provided below deck.The boats will be powered by two MAN D2862 LE 432 engines which will develop a total output of 882 kW at 2…

IMO Leads Table Top Security Exercise in Tanzania

International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s whole of government approach to maritime security, as an enabler for sustainable development of the blue economy, is being played out in the latest maritime security table-top exercise. The exercise in Tanga, United Republic of Tanzania (9-10 November) is highlighting the need for a unified approach to implementation of maritime security measures, with particular reference to IMO’s SOLAS chapter XI-2 and ISPS Code. During the exercise, participants from a range of Government agencies, including the port sector, are confronted with various threats and challenges to maritime security, involving policy decisions, crisis/emergency management and response.

Tanzanian President Sacks Port Chief in Anti-graft Campaign

Newly-elected President John Magufuli has sacked the head of Tanzania's ports authority and the top official in the transport ministry, part of a campaign to root out corruption and inefficiency in the East African nation. Magufuli fired the director general of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Awadhi Massawe, and the permanent secretary in the transport ministry, Shaaban Mwinjaka, following the disappearance of over 2,700 shipping containers at the port. Massawe, who was acting director of the port since February before being formally confirmed to the position in October by Magufuli's predecessor, President Jakaya Kikwete, becomes the third port chief to be sacked in as many years.

Dar es Salaam Port Enhances Capacity

Tanzania's Dar es Salaam Port has got ready to welcome large container vessels including MSC Martina, one of the largest container vessels. Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has informed that the adequate improvements have enabled to dock such large vessels at the country's major port. The Mediterranean Shipping Company's container vessel with an overall length of 244 meters and width of 32.2 meters and carrying capacity of 2,411 containers docked without any problem, said Madeni Kipande, Acting Director General, TPA. Kipande explained that the MSC Martina is one of the largest container ships owned by the Geneva-based Italian Company to dock and offload consignment at the port. The arrival of such large vessels is a major achievement to be recorded by the Tanzania Ports Authority, he noted.

Tanzania Plans $44m Project to Handle Large Ships

According to reports, Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) will undertake a $44 million joint venture project to replace the existing Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility to handle bigger oil vessels and an increased volume of crude oil at the Dar port. The joint venture, which is expected to commence in 2008, will see partners in the investment contribute equity and possibly manage and operate the SPM facility in collecting the revenue. Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) officials, said the proposed facility will have the capacity to handle both bulk and refined liquid products. The TPA expects the new facility to provide increased revenue in addition to improvements in quality of service, safety, efficiency and the capacity to handle bigger vessels.
