Norwegian Parliament Strikes Deal to Advance Seabed Mining

Norway's minority government and two opposition parties have agreed to allow seabed mineral exploration in the Arctic region, they said on Tuesday, in a key step towards full-scale ocean mining.The deal comes as Norway hopes to become the first country to make deep-sea mining happen on a commercial scale and secure critical minerals and jobs despite concerns over the environmental impact and international calls for a moratorium.The amended version of the government's proposal, which parliament will formally debate on Jan.

Portugal and Norway Team Up on Floating Offshore Wind

The Portuguese cluster Forum Oceano and Norwegian Offshore Wind have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration between the supply chains in the two countries.The MoU aims to lay the ground work for new contracts between companies from the two countries.The agreement was signed at a reception this week, during a visit to Portugal organized by Norwegian Offshore Wind and The Norwegian Embassy in Portugal.Forum Oceano and Norwegian Offshore Wind both focus on developing a strong supply chain in floating offshore wind.

US Department of Energy Releases Offshore Wind Strategy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released its Offshore Wind Energy Strategy, a first of its kind, comprehensive summary of the Department’s efforts to meet President Biden’s goal to deploy 30GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.The strategy aims to set the nation on a pathway to 110GW or more by 2050.Deploying 30GW of offshore wind would provide enough power for 10 million homes, support 77,000 jobs, and spur $12 billion per year in direct private investment, says the DOE.The…

DOF Subsea's Flagship Vessel Wins More Work

Norwegian subsea services company DOF Subsea has secured more work for its Skandi Africa vessel.The client, which DOF Subsea did not name, has exercised an extension option for the subsea service vessel, with the new commitment now running until February 2025.DOF Subsea CEO, Mons S. Aase, said: "Skandi Africa is the most sophisticated vessel in our fleet, and we are looking forward to continuing the journey, delivering successful installation campaigns.”Skandi Africa is designed for harsh environments, deepwater subsea construction, and flexlay operations. Report: Output from Shell's Prelude FLNG Shut Again

Shell has stopped production at its Prelude floating LNG plant off Western Australia after a fire.A Shell spokesperson told Reuters on Thursday that the fire at the giant FLNG unit "was rapidly extinguished."The 488-meter-long, Shell-operated, Prelude FLNG unit forms part of an offshore development that produces natural gas from the remote namesake field, located approximately 475 km north-northeast of Broome in Western Australia. The Prelude is the world's largest FLNG unit.The first LNG shipment from the project - originally sanctioned in 2011 - was shipped back in June 2019, via the Valencia Knutsen LNG tanker to customers in Asia.

Nigeria to Build its First FLNG Unit

Nigerian company UTM Offshore has signed a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the development of an FLNG facility in Nigeria with JGC Corporation, Technip Energies, and KBR.This will be Nigeria's first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility. Africa currently has two FLNG units in operation, the Hili Episeyo in Cameroon, and, as of recently, the Coral Sul FLNG in Mozambique. Geotechnical data acquisition company Geoquip Marine appointed Richard Turner as its new Chief Executive Officer with former CEO Stewart Higginson moving to the role of Executive Chairperson. Existing Chairperson, Peter Østergaard Nielsen will remain on the Geoquip Marine board as a Non-Executive Director.Turner has considerable experience as a CEO and specifically of the offshore energy sector. He joins Geoquip Marine from British Engines, where he was also CEO. Prior to this Richard served as President and CEO of JDR Cable Systems.

Contract Extension for DOF's 'Skandi Africa'

Norwegian subsea services DOF Subsea has won a contract extension for its Skandi Africa subsea construction vessel.The new commitment will now run until February 2024 and will start in direct continuation with the current contract. DOF Subsea did not say who the client was. Skandi Africa is designed for harsh environment and deepwater subsea construction and flexlay operations. The 160.9 meters long vessel was built in 2015, when it began its five-year charter with Technip (now TechnipFMC).According to AIS data on MarineTraffic, the DP3 vessel is currently deployed in W. Australia, and was last en route to the Lambert offshore field.

Technip Energies Acquires 16.3% Stake in Floating Wind Tech Start-up X1 Wind

Engineering and technology group, Technip Energies has acquired a 16.3% stake in X1 Wind, a startup that has designed "an innovative and disruptive" offshore wind turbine floater.Technip Energies is the lead investor in this funding round, which also counts with the participation of the European Commission-owned European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, advised by the European Investment Bank (EIB), and some of X1 Wind’s previous shareholders. Nortrans' Flotel to Assist with Coral FLNG Hook-Up

Singapore-based offshore vessel provider Nortrans has secured a flotel contract with TechnipEnergies to support the hook-up of the giant Coral Sul FLNG unit that has recently arrived in Mozambique after a journey from South Korea where it was built.Nortrans said that the flotel contract had a potential total period of up to 200 days including options. Optimarin Completes IMO G8 and USCG Test Program

Norwegian-based ballast water treatment (BWT) systems manufacturer Optimarin informs it has completed testing of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) in accordance with the revised IMO G8 guidelines, while also upgrading its existing U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approval certificates to ensure compliance for zero to two hours holding time.The testing procedures were conducted at the NIVA test facility in Norway from September 2019 to the end of June 2020, with DNV GL operating as the designated Independent Laboratory. Mammoet Lands its ‘Biggest Ever’ Contract at Arctic LNG 2 Project

Dutch heavy lift and transportation company Mammoet has said it has won its largest-ever contract at the Arctic LNG 2 project in Russia.Mammoet said Monday the contract was awarded by Technip-led joint venture NovArctic in cooperation with Saipem and NIPIgas. Under the contract, Mammoet will be responsible for unloading, transportation, and installation for the Novatek-operated Arctic LNG 2 project.The $21.3 billion Arctic LNG 2 project, sanctioned in 2019, will develop the Utrenneye field on the Gydan Peninsula.
