Shipshave Scoops Award for In-Transit Hull Cleaning Solution

MOL's PBCF Reduces 3-5% in Fuel Consumption

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that its jointly developed Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) received the 2017 Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Award, which is presented by Nikkei Inc. The PBCF, which is a device that improves propeller efficiency by breaking up the hub vortex generated behind the rotating propeller and offers an energy savings of around 3-5% compared to similar vessels not equipped with the PBCF, was co-developed by MOL, West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory Co., Ltd., and Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd. (called Mikado Propeller Co., Ltd. at the time), and is being sold by MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. The PBCF has been sold for more than 3,200 vessels all over the world since 1987, when it started sales of the conventional PBCF.

Keppel Grows LNG Business

Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) announced it has secured contracts to build its first two dual-fuel diesel liquefied natural gas (LNG) harbor tugs, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Keppel-Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) to jointly explore opportunities in using LNG as fuel. Keppel O&M's wholly owned subsidiary Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd secured the tug contracts from Keppel Smit Towage Pte. Ltd and Maju Maritime Pte. Ltd. who have ordered one unit each. The two tugs are expected to use bunkering services provided by the joint venture company, FueLNG Ltd. The tugs will be built to Keppel's proprietary design which won the Outstanding Maritime R&D and Technology Award at the 2015 Singapore International Maritime Awards.

Nominations Open for Singapore International Maritime Awards 2017

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is calling for nominations for the Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2017. The biennial IMA recognises individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Singapore's development as a premier global hub port and a leading international maritime centre. The following award categories for IMA 2017 are now open for nomination. Please refer to Annex A for details. The nomination forms and assessment criteria for IMA 2017 are available here. Nominations will close on 6th Jan 2017. The SRS Green Ship of the Year Award, which recognises quality Singapore-registered ship with energy efficient ship designs, is the eighth award category.

Barge Master Wins Innovation Award at OTC

The Barge Master T40 motion compensated knuckle boom crane has been recognized for technological innovation, winning the Spotlight on New Technology Small Business Award at this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston. Barge Master develops motion compensation systems for the maritime industry that compensate vessel motions, creating a platform that is not moving with respect to the stationary fixed world. The systems are developed to increase the safety and workability of offshore lifting operations.

Hempel’s Fouling Defence Product Hempaguard Applied to 500 Vessels

Leading marine coatings manufacturer, Hempel, announces - after only two and a half years on the market -  its award winning innovative fouling defence product Hempaguard has now been applied as a full vessel coating to 500 ships. This milestone was reached yesterday with the coating of a 61,614 dwt, 2011-built, container vessel. Environmental obligations are at the top of the agenda for all responsible shipping companies and Hempaguard was introduced to the shipping industry against a backdrop of rising bunkering costs, tightening environmental regulations and the introduction of mandatory Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP).

Simrad HALO Radar Wins 2015 Design Award

GAC's Hull Cleaning Solution Debuts in Singapore

GAC EnvironHull’s eco-friendly, diver-free hull cleaning technology makes its Asian debut at this year’s Sea Asia exhibition, marking its introduction at one of the world’s busiest ports, Singapore. The HullWiper Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) system was launched in late 2013 in the United Arab Emirates and has since been rolled out to other countries in the Middle East and in Sweden. It is now being offered to vessels in Singapore, through GAC EnvironHull’s local partner, T&T Salvage Asia Pte Ltd (T&T).

'Spotlight on Arctic Technology' Award for Viking Supply Ships

Viking Supply Ships informed that the company has been elected as a winner of this year’s “Spotlight on Arctic Technology” award at the Arctic Technology conference in Copenhagen. During the winter of 2013, Viking Supply Ships performed Ice-trials of our Icebreaker Loke Viking-class Ice 1A AHTS. The tests showed that the vessel performed good at ice-breaking, ridge penetration, maneuvering and channel clearing. Results showed that the Loke Viking class' performance in light/moderate ice conditions is at the same level as that of Arctic purpose built supply Ice-breakers. Viking Supply Ships has, during the last 15-20 years spent large resources on improving our competence and expertise within arctic offshore, in order to provide our clients with even better services.

Welltec Opens New Factory in Esbjerg

Oil service company Danish Welltec signed an agreement to set up a factory in Esbjerg. The factory will enable Welltec to increase production and ensure the quality of the company’s newest and most advanced products, which are exported globally. Raymarine Evolution Autopilot Certified for Optimus

Raymarine’s new Evolution EV-2 drive-by-wire autopilot system has been certified for use with SeaStar Solutions’ new Optimus EPS and Optimus 360 electronics steering systems. Optimus EPS systems provide effortless electronic power steering for outboard powerboats, while Optimus 360 systems add easy 360-degree maneuvering capabilities using an intuitive joystick controller. Both systems use CAN bus networking for steer-by-wire control. The new Evolution EV-2 autopilot system delivers an autopilot experience with sharp course keeping and simple operation.

Raymarine Autopilot wins NMEA-BWI Technology Award

Independent panel selects product based on innovation, benefit to boaters, practicality and value. Raymarine took top honors at the 2013 National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) International Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, winning the NMEA-BWI Technology Award for its Evolution Autopilot. The NMEA event, held at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina September 25-28, was attended by representatives of leading marine electronics manufacturers, dealers, distributors, media, and others from the United States and abroad. Named runners-up in the Technology Award competition were Nobeltec's TimeZero app (first) and Garmin's quatix marine watch (second).

Rapp Electric Winches for New O’Hara Vessel

Rapp Hydema landed a contract for theoutfitting of the new trawler F/V Araho, a 185-ft. freezer-trawler being built for O’Hara Corporation at Eastern Shipbuilding in Pensacola, Fla. The owners had originally planned to retrofit the F/V Harvester Enterprise but instead opted for an outright newbuild. The new trawler build has potential to mark the first of several new trawler builds to replace aging hulls throughout the Alaskan trawl fleet. The Rapp package includes a pair of TWS-22051RE electric trawl winches.

Rolls-Royce LNG Environship Delivered to Eidsvaag

LNG as marine fuel takes another step forward as Eidsvaag AS took delivery of the first vessel of the Rolls-Royce prize winning Environship range this week, featuring a combination of Rolls-Royce design and technologies which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels. Once in operation the vessel will operate a demanding schedule with a weekly round voyage along the Norwegian coast delivering feed pellets to fish farms regardless of weather conditions.

Rolls-Royce has a Gas with Bergen Engines

March 2013 saw Rolls Royce collect the Green Ship Technology Award at the Green Ship Technology Conference in Hamburg for its Environship concept, which has lean burn Bergen Engines gas power units at it core. The Environship combines a range of Rolls Royce technologies (Bergen Engines is a subsidiary business) in a cargo ship model that, set against comparable vessels using diesel power engines, offers CO2 reductions of up to 40% (alongside 92% reductions in NOx and 100% less SOx emissions).

ABB’s onboard DC grid was one of 15 technologies selected for an award at the current OTC expo in Houston Texas. HYMAR Project Wins Technology Award

The EU Hybrid Marine (HyMar) Project—a collaborative research project led by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) and funded under the EU's Seventh Framework Research Program—won the “Ocean Going and Coastal Division Technology Award” at the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s Mansura Trophy Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Royal Thames Yacht Club. The primary aim of the HyMar project was to provide reliable and practical information about the effectiveness of marine hybrid propulsion in small craft.
