The SECNAV Innovation Awards Program seeks to recognize top DON individuals or teams who made significant innovative achievements in Calendar Year 2015. The institution of the Innovation Awards Program is part of a larger effort to incentivize contributors and leaders of innovation across the DON. Rolls-Royce Delivers Waterjets for US Navy LCS

Rolls-Royce delivered the Axial Mk1 waterjet for the latest Freedom-variant of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class, currently under construction for the U.S. Navy. This delivery marks the successful completion of the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) Future Naval Capabilities (FNC) program for “Compact, High Power Density Waterjets”. This new  waterjet will now be standard equipment for all future Freedom variants of the Littoral Combat Ships supplied to the U.S. Navy by Lockheed Martin.

Rolls-Royce delivers advanced new Axial Mk1 waterjets for the latest US Navy Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Rolls-Royce Axial Mk1 waterjets are very power dense, delivering more cavitation-free performance for their size and power than any other waterjet. At 22MW of power, a single waterjet of this scale can move almost half a million gallons of seawater per minute. Four of these waterjets will propel the LCS at speeds in excess of 40 knots. TechSolutions Connects S&T With Fleet

“TechSolutions allows individual warfighters to submit a request and get short-turnaround solutions from the science and technology community,” says Master Chief Electronics Technician Charles Ziervogel, the Command Master Chief at ONR and fleet liaison for TechSolutions. The process is simple:  A Sailor or Marine contacts TechSolutions via the web or email and shares a problem or situation that needs attention. “We want to hear from the Sailor handling the lines, or the Marine toting the rifle. They know what the pressing issues are,” Ziervogel says.

USCG & TSA to Discuss TWIC Reader Hardware

The US Coast Guard issued a notice stating that it and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will host a meeting in Washington, DC on November 19 to discuss the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) reader hardware and card application specification. Interested members of the smart card technology community, vendors of biometric card readers, and the general public are invited. After an overview of the TWIC reader hardware and card application specification and TWIC pilot test plans, TSA and Coast Guard representatives will be available to answer questions concerning the specification and pilot.
