Britain Reviewing Risks to its Satellite-Reliant Infrastructure

DSME, Kongsberg Maritime Join Forces
DSME and Kongsberg Maritime have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for a new LNG FSRU regasification control system. As part of the delivery scope for a vessel currently under construction at the Okpo shipyard in South Korea, DSME will develop a High Fidelity Dynamic Simulator for the regasification plant. The JDA, which was signed on 29th November 2016, enables DSME to utilise Kongsberg Maritime’s Dynamic Process Simulator ‘K-Spice’ and the ‘K-Chief’ automation and control system for the joint development of the vessel’s regasification control system.

US to Test 'Submarine' Drone That Can Launch from Ocean Floor
USA’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is testing a drone that can hibernate on the ocean floor for years at a time before being launched to the surface and into the air at the push of a button. The new drones, being developed by the DARPA, are part of a new focus by the US military in developing and improving technology for emerging threats. According to DARPA Director Arati Prabhakar, the Agency is trying to approach military technology needs with a new perspective, after having focused primarily on assets for ground wars in the past 14 years.

Wärtsilä Executive Elected EUGINE President
Wärtsilä Corporation inform that Kari Hietanen, Executive Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation, has been appointed President of the European Engine Power Plants Association (EUGINE). This is a newly established association of European manufacturers of engine power plants. Wärtsilä explains that there are 14 founding corporate members in the association, which acts as the voice of the industry in regulatory and policy matters relating to energy. Aker and Statoil Cancel Cat B Contract
Aker Solutions ASA and Statoil ASA have cancelled a contract for delivery of a semi-submersible rig capable of year-round well-intervention services on the Norwegian continental shelf. The companies in April 2012 agreed Aker Solutions would build the Category B (Cat B) rig and use it to provide Statoil with a range of well-intervention and drilling services for an initial eight years, starting in 2015. The technology development needed to build the rig has since proven to be considerably more demanding than initially anticipated and the parties on June 24 mutually agreed to terminate the contract with immediate effect. Aboard the SSV Robert C. Seamans last November, 1,500 miles from land, 38 researchers from Sea Education Association (SEA) studied a Brobdingnagian swath of Pacific Ocean that has become the temporary resting spot for thousands of tons of plastic. Commonly called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” the area has attracted significant media attention in the last decade but a surprising dearth of scientific attention. Contrary to popular opinion, the “Patch” is not a continuous field of debris, is not visible from space, nor is it an “island of trash.” But it’s there.
PMFG Win $13.7M Navy Contract
PMFG, Inc. (Parent of Peerless Mfg. Co.) Notice of Award Valued at $13.7 Million to Supply Air Moisture Separation and Filtration Systems to U.S. PMFG, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMFG) has announced it was awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy's Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) to provide the air inlet moisture separation/filtration systems to replace the existing systems on the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class. ONR: From Science Fiction to Science Fact
As Director of Innovation, Dr. Larry Schuette is one of three portfolio directors at the Office of Naval Research (ONR). His counterparts are the director of research (discovery and invention) and director of transition. The Office of Innovation promotes, fosters, and develops innovative science, technology, processes and policies that support the Department of the Navy. “I manage the ‘leap ahead’ portfolio here at the Office of Naval Research,” he says. General Dynamics Wins $73m Naval Sea Systems Contract
General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), won a contract for Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E) Machinery and Systems support by the U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD). The five-year indefinite-delivery, indefinite quantity contract has a potential value of $73.3 million if all options are exercised. Through the contract, General Dynamics will support HM&E machinery and systems on Navy vessels and select land-based sites, as well as other federal agency and federally contracted vessels. These services include prototype engineering, design, development, testing, performance specifications and data analysis, system fault tree and safety analysis, computer programming and software engineering.

Hearing on Oil Recovery Research & Technology Needs
The Subcommittee on Energy and Environment of the House Committee on Science and Technology conducted a hearing on Research and Technology Needs for Oil Recovery and Effective Cleanup of Oil Spills. WHOI, RTDC Technology Transfer Partnership
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the Regional Technology Development Corp. (RTDC) of Cape Cod announced the signing of a technology transfer and entrepreneurial services agreement designed to accelerate the transfer of WHOI technology innovations to the marketplace. The alliance is an outsourcing arrangement intended to immediately and cost-effectively enhance licensing capabilities at WHOI and the commercialization of WHOI innovations and expertise. The partnership with the RTDC is the latest initiative from the WHOI Office for Applied Oceanography (OAO), established in 2007 to encourage innovation in technology, serve as a hub for WHOI licensing and commercialization efforts, and protect the institution’s intellectual property.

Dr Kirsi Tikka has been promoted to the position of Vice President Global Technology and Business Development at ABS. The new position means a considerable expansion of her previous responsibilities as Vice President Special Projects at the classification society.
