UK Backs Zero-emissions CTV Concept

New Flag for NATO Research Vessel

Unlocking Seabed Secrets with Underwater Robots

From September 22 to October 13, 2014, the NATO Research Vessel Alliance is conducting the Multinational AutoNomy Experiment (MANEX ‘14) along the Ligurian coast to demonstrate the advantages of mapping the seabed using autonomous vehicles. Throughout the experiment, multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) equipped with modern sensors relevant to NATO minehunting missions are being employed in the Ligurian Sea along the Italian coast between Framura and Bonassola to collect data that will allow NATO researchers to advance the area of seabed mapping using autonomous vehicles…

Australia’s HMAS Arunta Returns to Sea

A milestone has been achieved in the Anti-Ship Missile Defense (ASMD) Upgrade Program with HMAS Arunta setting sail for her sea acceptance trials this week. Chief Executive Officer, Defense Materiel Organization (DMO) Warren King and the Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, AO, CSC, RAN, together congratulated all those involved in the program. King said the ASMD Project will deliver a capability providing an improved level of self defense against modern anti-ship missiles for the Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC Class frigates.

DSTO, Lockheed Martin Form Research Collaboration

The Defense Science and Technology Organization (DSTO) and Lockheed Martin Australia have signed a new strategic alliance to collaborate on a range of technologies for strengthening defense and national security. The agreement was signed for DSTO by the Chief Defence Scientist Dr. Alex Zelinsky and for Lockheed Martin Australia by Chief Executive Raydon Gates. “This ten year agreement with Lockheed Martin Australia reaffirms DSTO’s commitment to enter into long term partnerships with industry for enhancing Australia’s current and future defense capability,” Dr. Zelinsky said.

Australian Navy Modernizes Ship Color Scheme

The Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, has announced that the Navy will progressively change the color of its surface fleet to meet modern war-fighting and regional environmental conditions. While not normally apparent to the bystander, the recent International Fleet Review with 17 international ships visibly demonstrated that color schemes do vary significantly between nations. These are mainly due to the regional environmental conditions faced by national navies such as the percentage of cloud cover or sunlight.

Bluefin Acquires SeeByte

Bluefin Robotics, a provider of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced that it has acquired SeeByte, Ltd., a provider of autonomous platform software that enhances the user experience and the capabilities of underwater sensors, vehicles and systems. SeeByte, headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bluefin. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Subsea GofM Acoustic Experiments Begin

US Naval Surface Warfare Center with Office of Naval Research (ONR) &  academia, is participating in a multi-country, acoustic scattering experiment in the Gulf of Mexico until June 2013. The test event dubbed TREX is a Target Reverberation Experiment with the key objective to understand how undersea environments impact the acoustic signature of a target. The collected data will be compared to sophisticated, physic-based, propagation and target scattering models. TREX is also being referred to as Gulf of Mexico Exercise 2013, or GULFEX13.

NATO CMRE Pursues Solutions to Protect the “Internet of Underwater Things”

The NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), the Science and Technology Organization (STO) executive body in charge of scientific research and technology development in the maritime domain, showcased future solutions to address defense and security needs of the Alliance by using unmanned vehicles connected through the “Internet of Underwater Things.” It took place during the eighth meeting of STO Task Group IST-096 focused on maturity models, scenario definition and prototyping environments in cyber defense. National organizations convened in La Spezia to discuss information assurance and secure information sharing within dynamic coalitions.

Kraken Awarded AquaPix Sonar Contract

Kraken Sonar Systems Inc., a  marine technology company, has announced  that it has been awarded a contract for an AquaPix Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar system by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Organization (DSTO). DSTO is the Australian government’s lead agency charged with applying science and technology to protect and defend Australia and its national interests. DSTO delivers expert, impartial advice and innovative defence solutions to agencies such as the Royal Australian Navy. Kraken’s AquaPix  Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (InSAS) system provides seabed images with unprecedented image resolution and detail.

New ONR Policy Equalizes Opportunities for Contractors

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) published new guidance Sept. 15, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest among companies competing for business with the science and technology organization. "This new set of guidelines levels the playing field for the contracting community when it comes to doing business with ONR," said Mark Bennington, ONR's executive director for acquisition management. "The new policy is effective immediately and is expected to ensure fair competition for companies selected to perform research and development (R&D) as well as systems engineering and technical assistance or other support services," Bennington said.

DNV Reommends Changes to U.S. Safety Regime

Houston: “A step change can be achieved with respect to prevention and mitigation of major accidents through a performance based safety regime supported by a risk management approach. Empirically, the risk can be reduced by a factor of ten,” says Elisabeth Tørstad, DNV COO in the Americas and Sub-Saharan Africa. As an input to the ongoing review of the U.S.’ current offshore safety regime, DNV is recommending considerable attention to several key aspects of safety management.

ONR Contributions in Ocean Science Highlighted at New Smithsonian Exhibit

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) contributed a video for the Ocean News kiosk at the new Smithsonian Museum of Natural History Sant Ocean Hall exhibit, scheduled to open to the public Sept. 27. The Sant Ocean Hall will feature a variety of high-definition video experiences, one-of-a kind displays, numerous interactive exhibits, and nearly 700 marine specimens and models. The video draws attention to ONR's leadership as a preeminent science and technology organization and demonstrates a vital application of its revolutionary research. The scientific work highlighted in the video takes place in the waters located off Martha's Vineyard and centers on ONR's investigative work through the use of robotic technologies.

Austal Signs Alliance With DSTO

Austal and Defense Science and Technology Organization (DSTO) today signed a five-year Industry Alliance that will strengthen Australia's maritime defenses. The purpose of this Alliance is to formalize and strengthen links between DSTO's maritime research and development activities and Austal's expertise in high speed vessel design, construction and systems integration. Through this alliance DSTO will gain a greater understanding of the long term performance and cost of ownership of high speed aluminum vessels, which will also assist it to provide whole-of-life support for the Australian Navy's Armidale Class patrol boats, and strengthen our maritime defenses.

Australia’s DSTO Unveils New Mine Sweeping System

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defense, Senator the Hon. Sandy Macdonald, recently unveiled a new class of highly advanced sea mine sweeping technology being developed by Australia's Defense Science and Technology Organization (DSTO). During a visit to DSTO Sydney, Senator Macdonald witnessed a demonstration of the new technology. The new system is based around high temperature superconducting magnet technology and represents a leap forward in magnetic mine sweeping. Australia is believed to be the only country in the world currently investigating the application of high temperature superconductors to sea mine warfare. Minesweepers are vital for keeping sea-lanes safe for naval and commercial shipping. Australia is already a leading exporter of mine sweeping equipment.
