Carnival Signs 15-year Service Deal with ABB

'Mega Green Port' Project Planned in Åland

Kongsberg, Zero Join Forces for Renewables

VTAS All Set to Go

The Vessel Technology Assessment System Project (VTAS Project) has finished its development stage and is set to go live.The UK-based design, engineering and risk management consultancy firm BMT, in collaboration with Black & Veatch, created VTAS for the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) in the UK. LR Grants AiP for Wison’s 300MW FSRP Design

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has issued approval in principle (AiP) to Wison for its 300MW capacity floating storage, regasification, power plant (FSRP) concept design.A relatively new design concept, FSRPs are essentially floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants that receive LNG from ships and store it within tanks below deck, before regasifying the LNG and using it to fuel an onboard power plant.LR, Wison and Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) are working together in developing this 300MW barge-type FSRP unit that will be moored at a jetty or placed near-shore.

Norwegians to Finance Vessel Retrofits

Following the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ratifications of the ballast water and exhaust gas treaties, government-owned Export Credit Norway offers financing to international vessel owners who purchase retrofit equipment from Norwegian suppliers. The Norwegian export credit agency Export Credit Norway has assembled a specialized team and tailor-made financing solution to support vessel owners who need to retrofit equipment such as gas exhaust cleaning systems, ballast water treatment systems and new coating systems.

New Software Aims to Transform Ship Maintenance

A consortium of technology suppliers led by BAE Systems is developing software that monitors the equipment, fuel and energy performance of a ship to provide real time information that will help the U.K. Royal Navy and commercial organizations better manage their fleets. The technology known as Ship Energy Assessment – Condition Optimization & Routing Enhancement System (SEA-CORES) analyzes big data from the complex systems on board a ship to provide a live model of its performance wherever it is in the world.

Ballast Water Treatment: Are You on Course for Compliance?

The International Maritime Organizations 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention lays down strict guidelines for the treatment and discharge of ballast water. The judges have extending the deadline to submit entries for the 2015 SHIPPINGInsight Award from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 to give more time for companies to participate. The annual SHIPPINGInsight Award recognizes a ship operating company and its technology partners for a successful project that advances the state-of-the-art in ship and fleet optimization. A panel of independent judges will review entries and select the winner. The award will be presented at a gala luncheon Oct. 13 at the SHIPPINGInsight 2015 Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition in Stamford, Conn. The winners will receive a binnacled captain’s clock in a polished wooden case with an engraved plaque, along with a framed certificate. Award submissions should be in the form of a case study.

We wish we had a dollar for every time we heard or read the words Big Data at the Nor-Shipping exhibition last month. We might even have collected enough cash to buy a round of expensive Norwegian beers for the gang at the Fridtjof bar. Seriously, Big Data is one of the most talked-about subjects at maritime industry gatherings. At Nor-Shipping there were no fewer than half a dozen panels and conference sessions focusing on the role of Big Data and analytics in commercial shipping.

Entries are now being accepted for the 2015 SHIPPINGInsight Award, which will be presented at the SHIPPINGInsight Fleet Optimization Conference & Exhibition, Oct. 13 in Stamford, Conn. The annual award honors a ship operating company and its technology partners for the successful implementation of an innovative technology or initiative that advances the state-of-the-art in ship and fleet optimization. A panel of independent judges will review entries and select the winner. The award will be presented at a gala awards luncheon on the opening day of the conference. Award submissions should be in the form of a case study. Projects must have been completed within calendar year 2014 or 2015. The entry may be submitted by either the fleet operator or its technology suppliers.

German Navy Frigates Get New Firefighting Tech
