ABS Names New Chief Engineer
Montaruli steps up at ABS as technical engineering authority. ABS, a provider of classification to the global marine and offshore industries, announced the appointment of Bret Montaruli as Vice President and Chief Engineer. In his new role, Montaruli will be responsible for overseeing the interpretation, application and compliance with the ABS Rules across all ABS Engineering offices worldwide. Montaruli steps into his new position February 15, 2016 to replace Jim Gaughan, who is retiring from ABS after 30 years of service.
Creative Systems Offers GHS Training

New Naval Engineering Education Center
The U.S. Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) signed a contract agreement May 6 to establish a Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC). The purpose of the NEEC will be to educate and develop world-class naval systems engineers for the Navy's civilian acquisition, engineering and science workforce. Led by the University of Michigan, the NEEC Consortium will initially be comprised of 15 colleges and universities, along with the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and the Society of Naval Architects and Engineering (SNAME). Naval Engineering Education Center Kick Off
Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) celebrated the kick off of the Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC), launching a three-day conference at the University of Michigan, July 26-28. NEEC is a new partnership between NAVSEA and a consortium of 15 top colleges and universities as well as 2 engineering professional societies focused on developing the Navy's future science, engineering and acquisition workforce. “Sailors depend upon you to give them a ship with a technological edge. Texas A&M Picks Transas/BCG for Simulator Replacement Project
Texas State Maritime Program, a component of Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) has selected the Buffalo Computer Graphics and Transas Marine USA team for the contract to replace their existing ship simulator. The new simulator complex will consist of a Transas Navi-Trainer Professional 3000 full mission ship simulator system with integrated GMDSS communications simulation capabilities, as well as full integration with the existing BCG PCS100 five-station ARPA/Radar simulator. Using Transas Marine's unique combination of simulation software, dedicated hardware (real ship controls) and commercial-off-the-shelf components, the simulator will be an ideal tool in the training and certification of United States Maritime Service Cadets.
Students Protect Inlets from Oil Contamination
A new Texas Tidal Inlet Protection Strategies (TIPS) program, being developed by researchers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, will soon be in place to protect our state’s sensitive bays and estuaries from the potential harm of offshore oil spills. The bays and estuaries of the Texas coast serve as nurseries for several species of marine organisms including sport fish. These estuaries are connected to the Gulf of Mexico through various inlets. An oil spill in any of these sensitive habitats has the potential to kill fish and even shut down popular tourist areas.
Wärtsilä Donates Engine to Texas A&M University
Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy.
BCGP Appoints Bon Fleur as General Manager
Brunswick Commercial & Government Products (BCGP) has announced Erik Bon Fleur as its new general manager. In this role, Bon Fleur will be responsible for day-to-day operations and business activities, reporting to Boston Whaler Group President, Nick Stickler. Prior to joining the BCGP team, Bon Fleur served in various other roles inside BCGP’s parent company, Brunswick Corporation, including continuous improvement manager for Boston Whaler, and most recently director of operations for Thunder Jet, an aluminum boat builder in Washington state.
Stephen H. DonCarlos Named to Port Commission
Attorney Stephen H. DonCarlos was appointed to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority by the Harris County Mayors and Councils Association on Sept. 19. The Harris County Mayors and Councils Association is an organization representing 26 cities in Harris County. Port Commissioners serve two-year terms without pay. DonCarlos was named to the seat previously held by Jimmy Burke. Burke had served as Port Commissioner since 1999. An attorney with Reid, Strickland & Gillette, L.L.P., DonCarlos was elected as Mayor of the City of Baytown in May 2006.

University of Hawaii Pushing Navy Research Center
Some University of Hawaii officials and faculty members are still pushing for a Navy research center on campus despite the Faculty Senate's rejection of the project, according to an AP story. University lawyers are reviewing the contract for a Navy University Affiliated Research Center to address concerns of faculty leaders who recently voted against the proposed military partnership. The vote against the center could be overturned if 100 professors sign a petition asking for a vote of all Manoa campus faculty members, according to the report. University faculty representatives voted 31-18 against the center, with opponents expressing fear it could disrupt existing programs, set up publication restrictions on research and allow for weapons development on campus.

Grabois has a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Delaware.

UT Research Vessel Up for Sale
According to the Daily Texan, after 35 years of service, the research vessel, Longhorn, is being sold by UT's Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas. The Newspaper reported that Steven Lanoux, assistant director of operations at the institute, said the Longhorn is not worth the $1.5m renovation cost it would take to repair the vessel. The ship requires hull repairs, new engines and new scientific equipment, he said. Private research crews and other universities such as the A&M Research Institute, Tulane University and Duke University pay to use the ship, but their fees will not cover the expensive repairs, he said. ABS Names Director of Technology Integration
ABS has appointed Diana Diettrich to director, technology integration. engineering. Houston, Texas, as part of the classification society's overall global technology and research efforts. Diettrich joined ABS as a field surveyor in 1981. Since then she has held various U.S. based and international survey assignments before joining the Americas Division Classification staff and later the ABS Corporate Classification staff. Her most recent assignment was Survey Manager within ABS' Corporate Technology Division. Diettrich is a graduate of Texas Maritime Academy with a BS degree in Marine Engineering. She also received an MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University and a Master's of Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
USN Announces 2015 Young Investigators
It's a career-defining moment for 36 college and university faculty April 30, as the Department of the Navy announces the recipients of its 2015 Young Investigator Program, one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Collectively, awardees will receive $18.8 million in grants to fund research across a range of naval-relevant science and technology areas. This is a banner year for the program, administered by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which increased funding by 50 percent over last year.
