MARAD Calls in NDRF Ships for Harvey Relief

The U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) has activated two National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) vessels for a pre-scripted Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mission to support relief efforts in Texas. The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College’s training ship, Empire State VI, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s  training ship, Kennedy, have received orders to set sail within 10 days for the four- to five-day transit from the east coast to the gulf coast of Texas. MARAD also received notification from FEMA to activate the Texas Maritime Academy’s training vessel General Rudder, which will remain in-port at Galveston.

Emissions Control Takes Center Stage for Workboat Engines

Today’s workboat operators must navigate increasingly stringent IMO and EPA environmental and emissions regulations in and around ports and rivers. As the drama unfolds, selective catalytic reduction or SCR is emerging as a viable vehicle to do just that. At the same time, fears about space constraints for smaller vessels and the hassle of carrying and handing urea for these systems are rapidly evaporating, as well. Two different firms – both familiar names in propulsion markets – have embraced SCR as the way forward. Both, Tenneco and Volvo Penta, rely on deep roots in these markets and significant experience in the effort to reduce emissions from engines.

DOT Provides $7 Million for Maritime Education

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration today announced that America’s six state maritime academies – California Maritime Academy, Great Lakes Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, SUNY Maritime College and Texas Maritime Academy – and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, N.Y., will each receive $1 million from a government program that recycles obsolete vessels. The funding will help ensure well-educated and highly skilled U.S.

Texas A&M Training Vessel to Visit New Orleans

The Port of New Orleans welcomed Texas A&M University at Galveston’s training vessel, TS General Rudder. The Texas Maritime Academy vessel and 50 cadets will be docked at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal through Thursday, Aug. The TS General Rudder comes to the Port of New Orleans on its first ever visit to the Crescent City after making stops at several other ports earlier this year including Mobile, Ala., and Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Pensacola, and Tampa, Fla. While at the Port, cadets will conduct training exercises such as standing watches and vessel maintenance.

RADM Pickavance on College Maritime Program

Rear Adm. William W. Pickavance, Jr. has joined San Jacinto College as a consultant to the maritime program. Pickavance, who served as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, spent 32 years on active duty as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy. He will assist with the development of the new San Jacinto College maritime facility along the Port of Houston. The facility will house multiple classrooms, labs, and simulators to increase the amount of U.S. Coast Guard-approved training to mariners.

MARAD: $2.3m for State Maritime Academies

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration announced that America's six state maritime academies will receive an additional $2.3 million total from a government program that recycles obsolete vessels. "With the majority of our goods moved over water, well-trained merchant mariners are critical in supporting our nation's security and economy," said Secretary LaHood. Funding is being made available from the sale of obsolete vessels from the Maritime Administration's National Defense Reserve Fleet and budget savings generated by the Maritime Administration. Johnson Joins Senesco Marine

Fourth Women on the Water Conference

November 4 through 6, the Maritime Administration and Texas Maritime Academy will host the fourth annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference in Galveston, Texas. The Conference will bring together cadets from the Federal and State Merchant Marine Academies and Colleges with professional women who are leaders in different sectors of the maritime industry. The event will be an opportunity for the cadets to learn about the exciting careers that are open to them directly from successful women as well as to hear about current issues affecting the maritime industry. This is also an opportunity for the cadets and professional women alike to meet and network with others in the maritime industry.

First Consolidated Merchant Mariner Credential

The U.S. Coast Guard issued the first consolidated Merchant Mariner Credential May 7, during the Towing Safety Advisory Committee meeting held at Dania Beach, Fla. Jessica Dennis, a regulatory compliance manager for Hornbeck Offshore, was the first mariner to receive the new MMC as evidenced by its serial number of 000000001. Dennis is a graduate of the Texas Maritime Academy and holds domestic officer endorsements such as; second mate of steam motor vessels, able seaman, wiper and stewards department.

ABS Names Director of Technology Integration

ABS has appointed Diana Diettrich to director, technology integration. engineering. Houston, Texas, as part of the classification society's overall global technology and research efforts. Diettrich joined ABS as a field surveyor in 1981. Since then she has held various U.S. based and international survey assignments before joining the Americas Division Classification staff and later the ABS Corporate Classification staff. Her most recent assignment was Survey Manager within ABS' Corporate Technology Division. Diettrich is a graduate of Texas Maritime Academy with a BS degree in Marine Engineering. She also received an MBA from Our Lady of the Lake University and a Master's of Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.

LNG Training Agreement To Be Signed

Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton, presidents of the major seafaring unions, and the heads of major maritime academies will sign an agreement on June 5 to implement a set of universal standards in training crews for tankers carrying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The standards were developed by an industry working group facilitated by the Maritime Administration. The agreement will help expand the pool of U.S. mariners qualified to sail the ships in the growing worldwide LNG fleet. Signatories include Seafarers International Union, American Maritime Officers, Marine Engineers Beneficial Association; Masters, Mates, and Pilots; Sailor’s Union of the Pacific, the U.S.

Marine industry operations will grow and develop with highly trained workers as a result of the expansion and upgrade of the Full Mission Ship Simulator operated by the Texas Maritime Academy. The improvements were made possible by a $250,000 grant to Texas A&M University at Galveston by Houston Endowment Inc., a philanthropy endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones. Mike Kemp, vice president and CEO of the campus, said this funding will significantly assist the university in complying with operational standards and technological requirements established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). The Texas Maritime Academy is one of only six in the United States and the only one on the Gulf coast.

MARAD Ships Help in Hurricane Recovery

Eight ships from MARAD’s National Defense Reserve Fleet are serving in the national effort to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Two Ready Reserve Force ships have stood firm in New Orleans, their home port. The Cape Kennedy has provided office space for the operations of the Port of New Orleans; the Cape Knox has supported that effort, and is now fully crewed and ready to sail to support cleanup efforts. Three state maritime academy training ships will provide housing and support for port workers and petroleum industry workers, and three more Ready Reserve Force ships will help underpin the area’s economic recovery. The crane ship Diamond State is in New Orleans; the crane ship Equality State will sail on Tuesday for Gulfport, MS; both aim to help restore the cities’ port operations.
