Fincantieri Marinette Marine Awarded Contract for Third Constellation-class Frigate

Eastern Conducts OPC Final Critical Design Review for USCG

ESG Completes First OPC Milestone On Schedule, Within Budget

Panama City, FL, Eastern Shipbuilding has successfully completed its Initial Critical Design Review (ICDR) milestone with the United States Coast Guard on 21 July, 2017 for the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) Program. ESG’s accomplishment is noteworthy as it occurred on schedule and within the budget constraints set forth by USCG acquisition, and cleared the way to proceed to the next critical milestone known as Final Critical Design Review (FCDR). This accomplishment comes after a weeklong group of discussions, demonstrations, and design presentations by ESG’s design team to the USCG Ship Design Team, Project Management Staff, and Department of Homeland Security. The purpose of ICDR is to verify that the OPC detail design is integrated and internally consistent with the USCG requirements.

Raytheon Anschütz Integrates WECDIS in UK Combat Ships

Raytheon Anschütz, a leader in naval bridge system integration, has announced the successful integration of Warship Electronic Chart Display Information System (WECDIS) into their Integrated Navigation and Bridge Systems (INBS) for the UK Royal Navy Type 26 Global Combat Ships. In support of the Type 26 Global Combat Ship program, Raytheon Anschütz has completed the critical design review for the integration of the Royal Navy’s fleet-wide STANAG-compliant WECDIS charting software into the Raytheon Synapsis Integrated Navigation and Bridge System.

AN/SPY-1 SSSA Completes Critical Design Review

The Critical Design Review (CDR) stage for AN/SPY-1 radar Solid-State Switch Assembly (SSSA)'s high voltage modulator completed Aug. 26, confirming that the design is expected to meet performance requirements. A CDR confirms the system is on track to achieve affordability and cost goals, and establishes the system's initial product baseline. The successful close-out of the CDR milestone means that the SSSA has achieved a high level of maturity, and is ready to start complete hardware design and system testing. SSSA is intended to replace the current vacuum tube modulator switches in the AN/SPY-1 radar transmitter with functionally similar, highly reliable solid-state switches. The AN/SPY-1 radar constitutes the primary air and surface search radar for the AEGIS Weapons System.

GD to Take Next Step in 'Knifefish' Development

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems completes the critical design review for 'Knifefish', the surface-mine countermeasure unmanned undersea vehicle (SMCM UUV). Iridium Next Constellation Passes Critical Milestones

McLean, Va. - With the planned commencement of the launch of its next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT, less than 36 months away, Iridium announced the completion of the satellite preliminary design review phase of the program. This phase concludes the preliminary design and specifications for all elements of the satellite system, including payload, main mission antenna, feeder links and cross links. “The foundation for Iridium NEXT satellite design is complete,” said Scott Smith, executive vice president, Iridium NEXT. Lockheed Martin Awarded Grant

Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors, Moorestown, N.J., is being awarded a $44,910,868 cost-plus award/fixed-fee contract for combat systems engineering. The grant will support the government of Australia under the Foreign Military Sales Program - Case AT-P-LCQ – after it selected the Navy/Lockheed Martin Aegis Combat System for its Australian Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Program. These requirements include the necessary combat systems engineering, computer program development, ship integration and test logistics technical services, NSCC/CSEDS equipment, and staging support to design and build an Aegis Weapon System (AWS) baseline to support the AWD Program. The AWD AWS baseline will be derived from a technology refreshed variant of the Navy AWS baseline 7 Phase I.

Austal JHSV Initial Critical Design Review

On April 28, 2009, Austal completed the Initial Critical Design Review (ICDR) in its contract with the U.S. Navy for the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). During the ICDR, the Austal team provided a comprehensive summary of the critical areas of the JHSV design for Navy approval to proceed to Final Critical Design Review, the next critical milestone. In November 2008, Austal was awarded the contract to design and build the US Department of Defense’s next generation multi-use platform, the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). As prime contractor, Austal will design and construct the lead 103-meter JHSV, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13.

FAST Program Achieves Successful Critical Design Review

Atlas Elektronik UK, with its Atlas-QED consortium partners ITT Corporation (formerly EDO Corporation) and QinetiQ, has achieved a successful Critical Design Review of a mine counter measures (MCM) flexible agile sweeping technology (FAST) technology readiness demonstrator (TRD), in line with the main program schedule. The demonstrator, which is being supplied under contract, will ultimately enable the MoD to put a combined influence sweep (CIS) replacement into service using FAST Technology. This latest milestone follows an Interim Design Review in September 2007. With the build phase well underway, the program remains on track to achieve the target of readiness for formal trials later this year.

Lockheed Martin Passes Design Review

Lockheed Martin marked a milestone in the Norwegian Navy New Frigate program with completion of the Critical Design Review for the Integrated Weapon System. System (IWS). The IWS includes the full complement of ship sensors, weapons, computing suite and communications equipment designed to give the Nansen-class frigates advanced anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-air capabilities. Based on the U.S. Navy's Aegis combat system, the IWS also will support interoperability of Norwegian Navy ships with those of the United States and other users of the Aegis system. Lockheed Martin is developing the IWS for five new Norwegian frigates being built by the Spanish shipbuilder IZAR Construcciones Navales, SA.

USCG Deepwater: Centerpiece of Coast Guard Transformation

By Gordon I. Throughout the Cold War, the need to maintain strong military forces to deter war with the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact was a mainstay of U.S. national security policy. During today's global war on terrorism, similar linkages exist between a more capable U.S. Coast Guard, improved homeland security, and the deterrence or defeat of a terrorist attack in the maritime domain. The 9/11 Commission Report clearly describes this nexus. "Our report shows that the terrorists analyze defenses," the Commission wrote. "They plan accordingly. Defenses cannot achieve perfect safety. They make targets harder to attack successfully, and they deter attacks by making capture more likely.

DD(X) Ready for Detail Design and Production

partnership with General Dynamics, BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin, has completed the initial critical design review for the overall system design for the DD(X) multi-mission destroyer. The event demonstrated that the program is ready for the Flag level review in September and that the DD(X) Flight 1 system design is complete, stable and mature enough to enter detail design. "Absolutely magnificent," said U .S. Navy Capt. Chuck Goddard, PMS 500 DD(X) program manager. "The hard work and dedication of the DD(X) National Team and Navy program office to further mature the design and technologies since successfully carrying out the preliminary design review over a year ago should be applauded," said Brian Cuccias, Northrop Grumman vice president and DD(X) program manager.

DD(X) Completes Design Review

The U.S. Navy successfully achieved a significant milestone for the multi-mission DD(X) destroyer with the completion of a system-wide Critical Design Review (CDR) on Sept. 14. The review represents the culmination of years of design effort that encompassed the ship, mission system, human, and shore designs that now comprise DD(X). DD(X) is the Navy’s next-generation destroyer, tailored for land attack and inland support of joint and coalition forces. It is designed to meet Marine Corps, Army and Special Operations requirements for precision strike ashore, but be able to outmatch current and projected threats in the air, on the surface and under water.
