Helsinki Shipyard Lays Keel for Swan Hellenic's New Cruise Ship

The keel laying ceremony for the first of Swan Hellenic’s two new ice-class expedition cruise ships took place in Helsinki today. This saw the first 347-ton block of the ship – newly arrived from Klaipeda, where it had been outfitted and painted – being set on the keel over coins to bring good luck in accordance with ancient maritime custom.Swan Hellenic announced during the ceremony that the ship would be christened SH Minerva in honor of the company’s first purpose-built vessel, named after the Roman goddess of creativity and wisdom.

Grand Bahama Shipyard Stayed Busy in 2016

The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

Maritime Career Days Commence in Turkey

The annual Career Days at Istanbul Technical University each year is scheduled to continue with its 19th organization from November 4-21, 2014. The 19th Career Days will begin with V-Ships Ship Management on November 4 and conclude with Yasa Shipping on November 21, including several other shipping companies in between, as listed below. With this organization, the students who study in the maritime faculty will be able to ask the shipping companies questions and will be given opportunities to work as a cadet for their long-term sea training in these companies.

Eastern Launches Second Vessel for Bravante

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. announced the christening and launching of the M/V Bravante VI for Boldini S.A., Bravante Group of Brazil. This is the second vessel in a series of five. The event was held on August 5, 2013 at Eastern’s Nelson Street Facility with hundreds of Eastern’s Employees and Guests. Attending from Bravante were Renato and Regina Nascimento, Nuno Neves and Rubia Amaral, William Grutter, Cristiana Marsillac and Luis Harduim along with several members that traveled from Brazil witnessing the launch of the second of five Platform Supply Vessels under contract with Eastern.

Crewing Managers V. Ships in New Strategic Partnership

V.Ships Leisure (a provider of ship-management services to the passenger shipping industries) with V.Hospitality and MHG have formed a strategic partnership. The companies have a number of new joint projects in progress and the partnership will allow for a more effective collaboration. “We’re delighted to announce our partnership with MHG,” said Bertrand Petyt, Crew Operations Manager at V.Ships. “We have been working with MHG for many years and not only do we have a trusted and valued relationship but our companies’ philosophies and service standards are aligned.” The new partnership will include our hotel & cruise recruitment division V.Hospitality as well as our yacht recruitment division The Crew Network (Antibes).

World Maritime Day Observance in Tampa on 27 October

North American World Maritime Day Observance and US Coast Guard Missions Conference to feature Piracy, Stewardship, Safety and Security. Two day event draws maritime industry, regulators and regional representatives. Piracy will be the focus of this year’s North American World Maritime Day Observance being held in Tampa, FL on October 27th followed by a US Coast Guard Missions conference on October 28th which will feature panel discussions on the stewardship, safety and security missions of the Coast Guard. Both events will be held at the Marriott Waterside in Tampa and are free and open to the public. North American regional representatives from industry, government and NGO’s will dialog on these critically important regional issues.

Cargo Ship Re-Floated Near Baltimore

The 800 ft bulk carrier CSL Argosy that was aground in Chesapeake Bay near Baltimore re-floated at approximately 10 p.m. Jan. 19. The ship is safely anchored near Annapolis, Md., while the crew manually inspects all areas of the ship. The results of these inspections will be reviewed by the Coast Guard. At this time there are no signs of damage or pollution. The CSL Argosy re-floated after a total of approxiamtley 19,300 metric tons of iron ore were removed and transferred to barges. The ship and its crew transited with tug boat assistance to an anchorage near Annapolis. The Unified Command established to respond to the grounded ship was a collective group comprised of the Coast Guard, State of Maryland, the ship's operator and VShips.

Omega Navigation Announces Charters for the Two Newbuildings

Omega Navigation Enterprises, Inc. has secured three year time charters at a daily rate of $25,500 for its two recently acquired newbuilding product tankers, the Omega Emmanuel and the Omega Theodore, with ST Shipping & Transport Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Glencore International AG. Both time charters include profit sharing arrangements on quarterly basis, pursuant to which earnings from the vessels in excess of $25,500 per day will be divided equally between Omega Navigation and ST Shipping. This sharing ratio will be adjusted when the vessels trade in ice conditions, so that the profit sharing above the base rate of $25,500 per day between Omega Navigation and ST Shipping will be 65%/35%.

Omega Navigation Announces Delivery Tankers

Omega Navigation Enterprises, Inc., a provider of global marine transportation services announced that it has taken delivery of two product tankers, the Iasonas, to be renamed the Omega Lady Sarah, and the Adonis, to be renamed the Omega Princess. Omega Navigation has taken delivery of five double hull product tankers and has agreements to acquire one additional double hull product tanker with expected delivery by the end of July 2006. The Omega Lady Sarah is a Panamax (LR1) double hull product tanker of 71,500 deadweight tons (dwt), built by STX, South Korea in 2004. This is the third Panamax product tanker delivered to Omega and follows the delivery of the Omega Queen and Omega King"announced on May 31, 2006 and June 16, 2006, respectively.

Omega Navigation Takes Delivery of Tanker

Omega Navigation Enterprises, Inc., has taken delivery of its third product tanker, its first Handymax (Ice Class 1A) double hull product tanker, the Aris, to be renamed the Omega Prince. The Omega Prince is a Handymax (Ice Class 1A, IMO II & III) double hull product tanker of 36,680 deadweight tons (dwt), built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea in 2006. The acquisition was funded in part from the net proceeds of the Company's initial public offering and in part from debt under a senior secured credit facility provided by HSH-Nordbank AG. The Omega Prince is employed under a long term time charter to D/S Norden A/S (Norden) until June 2009 at a daily time charter hire rate of $21…
