Naval Architect Mitchell Levi Joins The Shearer Group

The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) announced Mitchell Levi has joined its naval architecture, marine engineering, and marine surveying firm as a naval architect. He holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. For his undergraduate research, Levi examined the highly coupled relationships between propulsion loads and cooling systems.While studying at the University of Michigan, Levi completed internships at TSGI, the American Bureau of Shipping and Fincantieri Marinette Marine.

Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has ordered the first commercial unit of a new Corvus Energy high-density lithium-ion capacitor energy storage system (ESS) Blue Marlin.According to Corvus, which plans to market the system to the offshore energy market, the Blue Marlin uses lithium-ion capacitor (LiC) cells that sustain very high charge/discharge rates of 550 C peak and 200 C continuous, enabling both energy recapture and fast discharge for high-power load handling. Corvus, Kawasaki Pact for Novel ESS for Offshore Vessels

PBES Lithium Energy Storage for HH Ferries

Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) said it has secured the energy storage supply contract for the two largest battery-powered ferries in the world. Each of the two Scandlines Helsingborg-Helsingör ferries will have 4.16 MWh batteries to provide power for primary propulsion. The fully electric ferries will carry their part of more than 7.4 million passengers and 1.9 million vehicles annually with zero emissions. Improved Performance for Lithium Ion Battery Systems

Corvus Energy has validated and is restating the product specifications for its lithium ion battery systems reflecting that the system has double the RMS power capability and substantially more energy capacity than previously reported. As part of its ongoing testing regimen, Corvus worked closely with LAEC and its founder, Dr. Majid Bahrami, at its state-of-the-art testing lab located at Simon Fraser University (SFU) on an extensive series of tests of the performance and characteristics of the AT6500 platform. The testing results are consistent with the performance of our existing installations, which are monitored closely. Corvus has the largest installed base of industrial lithium ion batteries in the maritime industry, including ferries, tugs, offshore supply vessels and port cranes.

New Metallic LED Vaporproof Fixture

Phoenix Products Company, Inc. announced the release of the Metallic LED VP Series of vaporproof fixtures. Aiming to keep the design of traditional “jelly-jar” fixtures, the Metallic LED VP uses a patent pending module to house a Bridgelux LED light source rated for 50,000 hours of illumination. These fixtures are UL 1598A listed for marine, outdoor, saltwater environments; UL 844 listed for hazardous locations; ABS listed; IP66; and LM79 tested and certified. As with any LED fixture, thermal management is the key to protecting the efficiency and long life of the solid state light source.
