Vinashin to Build Shipyard

Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder, Vinashin, has been greenlighted to build a $81m shipyard in the northern port city of Hai Phong, according to Vietnam News Agency. Work on the Vinashin An Duong in Thuy Nguyen district is due to begin late this year and slated for completion by 2009. Vinashin is also set to spend $94m on rebuilding the Cua Viet seaport in the central Quang Tri province. It will turn Cua Viet into a 300-400 ha port complex with a shipyard, ecotourism facilities, a golf course, and a wharf to accommodate 100,000-ton ships. Plans for Shipbuilding Industrial Park in Thuy Nguyen District

The government of northern port city of Hai Phong on Thursday unveiled a detailed plan to develop a $49 million shipbuilding industrial park in Thuy Nguyen district. The Vinashin-Shinec shipbuilding industrial park (SIP) was formed in September last year and run by the Shinec Trading and Manufacturing Joint Stock Company, an affiliate of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin). SIP has so far attracted seven major projects, including a joint venture between Vinashin and Finland’s Mac Gregor group, a $100 million project of the Swedish company, IKEA, and a steel structure plant of Vinashin. Vinashin, Czech Firm Ink Deal

The Shinec Shipbuilding Joint Stock Co, a subsidiary of Vinashin, signed an agreement to establish a joint venture with the Czech Republic’s Viking Cordage Co, VNS reported. The joint venture will invest US$5 million in a factory in the Vinashin-Shinec Industrial Zone in Hai Phong’s Thuy Nguyen District. The facility will manufacture devices for navigation which have not been previously produced in Viet Nam, including nets and cables made from natural and artificial fibres, according to Shinec. Shinec specialises in producing ship interiors. The company has previously supplied products to customers in the Czech Republic and the UK. Haiphong, Shipbuilding Center of Vietnam

Haiphong has been long viewed as a cradle of the Vietnamese ship building industry with such well-known names as Bach Thai Buoi and Nguyen Huu Thu in the past and Bach Dang, Nam Trieu, Pha Rung and Ben Kien today. Annually, shipbuilding firms in Haiphong city accounts for about 50% of the whole sector’s capacity. The city has continued to assert itself as a centre for building new ships and repairing large tonnage ships. By 2010, Vinashin is expected to invest nearly VND 4,000 billion in shipbuilding establishments in Haiphong, raising capacity for building new ships and repairing ships with a view to earning revenue of VND 8,000 billion.
