New German Shipbuilding Group Emerges

ThyssenKrupp Werften and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in a new group under the control of ThyssenKrupp Werften GmbH. The alliance will create a systems house with strong positions in the naval shipbuilding sector. "Under the new structure all existing locations will be retained," says Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG. Based on the existing key activities of the individual shipyards, the new group will concentrate on four product areas: submarines, naval ships, civilian ships and repairs. The locations Hamburg, Emden and Kiel will each be developed into centers of excellence with clearly defined product responsibility. This will safeguard the locations long-term and create a balanced development perspective.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Wins Orders for Ships

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems – a company of ThyssenKrupp Technologies – has got the order to build two 3,400 TEU container ships. These very compact container ships have a capacity of 3,400 TEU (3,400 TEU corresponds to 3,400 standard container of 20’ size) will be built at the company’s yard Nordseewerke in Emden. This 3,400 TEU Vessel meets the charterer’s requirements for worldwide trade. Thus, this ship type can be employed successfully for feeder traffic as well as for line operation. The customer is the Leer-based shipping company Hartmann. After the delivery of two 2,700 TEU ships in 2004 and 2005 to the Hartmann shipping company, this new order underscores the connection between the ship owner and the shipyard.

2,700 TEU Containership Launched at B&V

A 2,700 TEU containership built at Blohm+Voss, which belongs to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, was christened Cosco Panama. Godmother of the ship was Anja Berlien, wife of Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman of the Board of Directors at ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG. GEBAB (Gesellschaft für Konzeption und Betreuung privater Investitionen mbH, Meerbusch) is the ship’s owner; Maritime GmbH is the ship’s manager. Cosco Panama is particularly significant in that it is likely the last time a containership will be launched from the Blohm + Voss yard. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG made the strategical decision to have Blohm + Voss concentrate on the construction of large-scale yachts and naval vessels.
