Brazil sank a decommissioned aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean off its northeast coast, the Brazilian Navy said, despite warnings from environmentalists that the rusting 1960s French-built ship would pollute the sea and the marine food chain.The 32,000-tonne carrier had been floating offshore for three months since Turkey refused it entry to be scrapped there because it was an environmental hazard and the ship was towed back to Brazil.The carrier was scuttled in a "planned and controlled sinking" late on Friday…

Bureau Veritas (BV) has opened a new remote survey center in Singapore, with more new locations to follow, as the testing, inspection and certification (TIC) services provider continues its digital transformation and push to prove remote class services amid travel restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newest site joins existing BV remote survey centers in Rotterdam, Piraeus, Istanbul and Dubai.Classification societies and other marine services providers have long striven to increase remote services in an effort to boost efficiencies and reduce costs.

Testing, inspection and certification (TIC) services company Bureau Veritas (BV) announced Alex Gregg-Smith has joined the BV group as Marine & Offshore Country Chief Executive, China.Reporting to Claude Maillot, Senior Vice President North Asia Zone, Gregg-Smith is based in Shanghai."We are delighted to have Alex back onboard with BV – and in such an important role," Maillot said. "China is so central to our activities, both for new construction and ships in service, so we needed someone with the expert background in classification that Alex provides.

Damen Marine Components (DMC) signed its first order with a Turkish Shipyard. The client is TERSAN Tersanecilik San. Tic. Aṣ., based at Yalova City on the Sea of Marmara, and the equipment will be installed on a 108-meter Factory Freezer Trawler vessel. Designed by Skipsteknisk AS, design number STL191L, it is currently in build for the Russian fishing fleet operator JSC PT Okeanrybflot.The order is for a single, customised Barke rudder with a surface area of 16 m² and a Commander rotary vane steering gear that delivers a torque of up to 430 kNm.

A consortium of companies aims to develop an expert decision support system for improved ship efficiency and safer navigation via a two-year R&D project called iSea. Backed by funding from the Eurostars program, the iSea innitiative is led by Danelec Marine, with other participants including Vessel Performance Solutions ApS (Denmark), i-Marine Technologies and Research Inc. (Turkey) and Deniztekno Danismanlik Bilgi Teknolojileri ve Bilgisayar San. Tic. Std. Sti (Turkey). Set to commence the R&D program in January 2017, the iSea team will deliver a set of Expert Decision Support Systems (EDSS) for enhancing the performance and navigability of vessels.

Diana Shipping Inc. (NYSE: DSX), (the “Company”), a global shipping company specializing in the ownership of dry bulk vessels, today announced that, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, it entered into a time charter contract with Narina Maritime Ltd, fully guaranteed by Cerrahgil Denizcilik Nakliyat ve Tic. A.S., for one of its Panamax dry bulk vessels, the m/v Coronis. The gross charter rate is US$4,750 per day, minus a 5% commission paid to third parties, for a period of minimum eleven (11) months to maximum fourteen (14) months. The charter is expected to commence on March 19, 2016. The “Coronis” is a 74,381 dwt Panamax dry bulk vessel built in 2006.

International engineering, testing, certification and classification group RINA has reported improved results for 2013. Its performance was strengthened by an upturn in marine activities and a drive to improve efficiency and drive down costs. RINA turnover for 2013 increased 4% to €294 million, while EBITDA was up 6% to €37.2 million. Ugo Salerno, RINA Chairman and CEO said, “Returning confidence in the global marine markets and a new management team which took on their responsibilities with enthusiasm at all levels meant the group exceeded expectations in 2013.

Intesa Sanpaolo, through the Merchant Banking Management of its Corporate and Investment Banking Division, and VEI Capital, investment company of Palladio Finanziaria in the Private Equity Mid-Cap segment, have agreed to buy a stake in RINA S.p.A., parent company of the RINA Group, Italy’s E-TIC (Engineering, Testing, Inspection, Certification) service provider. The initial 25 million euros investment by Intesa Sanpaolo and VEI Capital, which will be underwritten by and shared equally between the two partners…

The chief executive of energy services company Proserv has been named Ernst & Young Scotland Entrepreneur of the Year 2013. Judges praised David Lamont for molding “a phenomenal business of a truly global nature” in overseeing a 25% year-on-year growth during his two years at the company which operates from 30 sites across the globe. A panel of experts picked Mr. Lamont ahead of 28 other business leaders and he will now go forward to represent Scotland at the UK Entrepreneur of the Year final in October.

A energy production technology services company Proserv has bolstered its rapidly-evolving global footprint and specialist integrated services after acquiring major US company Total Instrumentation & Controls (TIC). The acquisition of Houston-based TIC, which specializes in advanced process and control systems equipment and has a second manufacturing facility in Lafayette (LA), also significantly increases Proserv’s talent pool by more than 300 people to over 1600 with the entire American-based workforce joining forces with the company under the Proserv mantle.

KBR  announced today that it was selected as Höegh’s preferred engineer to execute pre-FEED studies for two of its projects off the coast of Israel and offshore Australia. KBR will provide the pre-FEED study for the King liquefied natural gas-floating production storage and offloading (LNG-FPSO) facility currently being evaluated for Noble Energy's giant Tamar gas field off the coast of Israel. KBR has developed FPSOs that are in use worldwide and is recognized as one of the world's leading providers of onshore LNG plants and FPSOs. Höegh LNG awarded KBR a second FLNG pre-FEED study for an unnamed project offshore Australia. The four-month pre-FEED is intended to provide a Total Installed Cost (TIC) estimate for a two mtpa FLNG facility to enable further evaluation of the project.

Multraship has bought two newbuilding Azimuth Stern Drive tugs for delivery October 2007 and April 2008. The two multi-purpose tugs will be rated around 70 tonne bollard pull and are currently under construction at the Vega Denizcilik Sanayi Ve Tic. Ltd. Sti shipyard in Turkey. “Demand for reliable towage services in the North Sea is strong and we are pleased that we will be able to expand our fleet of modern tugs by buying these two new vessels for early delivery,” says Leendert Muller, managing director of Multraship. “We also have two Carrousel tugs building for us in Malaysia, set for 2008/9 delivery, which will together with these two new multi purpose vessels give our River Scheldt-based fleet a substantial boost to capacity.
