Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten and Siemens Energy have selected Ballard Power Systems and Chart Industries as primary equipment vendors for their design of what will be the first hydrogen-hybrid research vessel in the world. Ship Repair: Inside the $60m Refit of RV Roger Revelle
This month MR dives inside the $60 million refit of RV Roger Revelle, a project which leverages a treasure trove of ‘lessons learned’ from recent refits in the academic research vessel fleet and highlights the value of slimming the vendor list.Research vessel (R/V) Roger Revelle is back at work after a midlife refit involving upgrades from top to bottom, bow to stern. The ship is owned by the Office of Naval Research and has been operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego since 1996. It is one of the largest ships in the U.S.
MVeP Phase 2 Seeks Authors
The Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) Assessment was presented November 4th, 2010 at the SNAME Annual Meeting. This is the work of SNAME T&R Panel EV-10 previously Ad-hoc Panel 19. Eleanor Nick Kirtley and Tim Leach of the Glosten Associates presented to an audience of about 50. The Glosten Associates also featured MVeP at their booth in the Expo where many conference attendees were able to speak with the presenters and other participants including Matt Winkler, VP of Seaworthy Systems – Roll Royce. In Phase 1, MVeP developed a checklist of environmental impacts resulting from marine vessels. Each impact can be assessed on its own merit, and the compilation of all assessments makes clear the trade-offs of various measures giving a holistic view of the ship’s performance.
MMA Tug Crew Honored
The master and crew of Maine Maritime Academy's tug boat, Pentagoet, were recently cited for outstanding service to fellow mariners in peril in a letter of appreciation from USCG Captain Harry E. Haynes, Commander, Group Southwest Harbor. The letter recognized Captain Tim Leach, master of the vessel; Harry Stevens, mate engineer; and Zander Parker, MMA student crew member, for their assistance to the Coast Guard in voluntarily responding to the aid of the disabled tug and barge, Mackenzie Ryan. Maine Maritime Academy President Leonard Tyler presented the letter to the master and crew in a special ceremony held last week during the college's daily morning formation.
