SeaspanLNG Secures AIP for LNG Bunker Vessel

SeaspanLNG said it has secured an approval in principle (AIP) with Bureau Veritas for the design of a 7,600 cubic meter capacity liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel.The LNG bunker vessel has been designed for ship-to-ship LNG transfer as well as well as coastal/short sea shipping operations by Seaspan Ferries’ partner Vard Marine Inc. Seaspan Ferries’ class of dual fuel hybrid electric ferries were developed by Vard in 2014 and included a new method of bunkering the vessels.

Bureau Veritas Expands Marine and Offshore Services in N. America

Testing, inspection and verification services firm Bureau Veritas (BV) said it has taken a number of steps to broaden and deepen its marine and offshore services in North America.The opening of a new remote survey center in Miami is the latest step in the delivery of digital services across the Bureau Veritas network, providing yet further global coverage for remote surveys.Florida-based Tropical Shipping’s fleet has now benefited from remote survey services on three of its vessels sailing in the Caribbean trades.

Protheroe Joins Greystoke Team in Vancouver

Tim Protheroe has joined consultancy Greystoke Marine Management, headquartered in Vancouver.   Protheroe is a Master Mariner who came ashore with Lloyds Register in 1992 and worked in several senior positions before being appointed President, Lloyds Register America’s Inc. in 2014.    Greystoke recently secured a two-year contract with Swan LNG providing essential marine oversight for the company’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal development in Gujarat on the north west coast of India.

Darley Named LR Americas Regional Marine Manager

Mark Darley recently assumed the role of Americas Regional Marine Manager and President of Lloyd’s Register North America (LRNA). In these positions, he leads LR’s Marine business for the Americas region, overseeing commercial and business planning and developing strategy to improve the company’s competitive position within the region. He coordinates with the Marine Group in London and is responsible for achieving operational goals for safety, quality and financial performance in the Americas.

Lloyd's Register report looks at the commercial landscape, regulatory issues and technical realities of a new trade in ethane emerging as a result of increased U.S. U.S. ethane production capability, as a byproduct of total increased U.S. gas production, is underutilized. The potential exists for annual exports of 1 million metric tons of ethane to provide employment for 0.18 million cubic meters of shipping capacity if shipped to North Europe, a further 0.32 Mn Cu M if shipped to South Asia and a similar amount to China through the Panama Canal.

Brown Appointed COO at Lloyd’s Register

in Lloyd’s Register announced the appointment of Nick Brown, previously Director Business Development & Innovation, as the group’s new Marine Chief Operating Officer. Reporting to Marine Director Tom Boardley, Nick will be responsible for LR’s four global operating regions – Asia, Americas, Northern Europe and Southern Europe. David Barrow becomes Regional Marine Manager (RMM) for a new Northern Europe region while Apostolos Poulovassilis is RMM for Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Iain Wilson and Tim Protheroe remain in their Asia and Americas roles.

When talk turns to marine propulsion and the host of surrounding topics – emissions, efficiency, fuel consumption – we turn to class for answers. While there are just two questions, the ensuing answers from leaders at ABS, BV, ClassNK, DNV GL, LR and RINA are voluminous & enlightening. The stricter environmental regulations and rising fuel costs lead to technology development in design, size, propulsion and operations. This goes well beyond LNG as fuel, and we believe we will see a more diversified mix, with batteries, hybrids, methanol and so on.

Lloyd’s Register Americas Announces New Management Structure

Lloyd’s Register Americas, Inc. has strengthened its marine business organization to enhance the support it provides to clients throughout North and South America. With approximately 200 employees and a growing presence in the Americas, the strategically aligned management structure will help Lloyd’s Register sharpen its focus on client relationships and better facilitate the services it provides. Tim Protheroe has been appointed Senior Vice President - Americas Marine Business. He will have full executive responsibility for marine activities in the Americas and for implementing Lloyd’s Register’s global marine strategies in the region.
