NZ Harbour Welcomes its Largest Container Ship

The largest Port in the South Island of New Zealand, Lyttelton Port, has welcomed its largest ever container ship.The Singapore–flagged Rio de Janeiro, which can carry nearly 6000 containers and is the length of about three rugby fields, arrived early Saturday.Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) Chief Executive, Peter Davie said, “The Rio de Janeiro is a new class of ship to call at Lyttelton. She can carry 5,905 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEUs), while the largest container vessels currently visiting Lyttelton commonly carry 4,500 to 5,000 TEUs.“This is an important milestone for Lyttelton Port and our customers. Repercussions of EU-Japan Pact for Hamburg Port

The European Union (EU) has signed its largest-ever free trade agreement. This aims to boost the economies of the EU and Japan. For instance, the deal will reduce Customs duties and other trade obstacles, stimulate growth and create new jobs.After checking the legal formulation of the text and translation, the agreement will be submitted to the European Parliament and EU member states for approval. Ideally, the pact, which has been in preparation since 2013, can come into force before the European elections in 2019. How could it make itself felt in the Port of Hamburg? How has foreign trade with Japan previously developed?According to the European Commission, at the end of 2017 EU exports to Japan were expected to climb by between 16 and 24 percent.

Hapag-Lloyd Focuses on Africa

Hapag-Lloyd celebrated the official opening of its new office in Tema, the most important port city in Ghana. Beginning immediately, Hapag-Lloyd will manage all its activities in West Africa from this location. “I’m very pleased that our enhanced presence in West Africa is showing initial signs of success,” said Anthony Firmin, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hapag-Lloyd. “Our West Africa Express (WAX) service from and to West Africa has been operating with extraordinary success for several years and is very well received by customers. With our new East Africa Service (EAS), connecting Saudi Arabia with Kenya and Tanzania, we have entered another new trade. The GDP of West Africa has grown significantly in the last two years, rising by an average of 6 percent.

Hapag-Lloyd Opens Ghana Office

German-based Hapag-Lloyd opened a new office in the Ghana port city Tema, on February 1, 2018. Effective immediately, the company will be represented at the local level by its own customer service staff. “Africa is strongly developing just now. To benefit from this growth, it’s important for us to strengthen our presence in Ghana with our own office – and to get even closer to our local customers,” said Lars Christiansen, Senior Managing Director of Hapag-Lloyd’s Region Middle East. West Africa has recorded significant growth in the last two years, with gross domestic product (GDP) rising by six percent on average. Among Ghana’s most important export goods are cocoa, timber products and cashew nuts.

Kiel’s Forest Products Center Launched

Kiel’s new forest products handling and distribution centre has gone into operation in the Ostuferhafen. This means that the port has now become an integral part of the logistics chain operated by the Swedish concerns Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) and Iggesund Paperboard. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) said: “We have created a terminal in the Ostuferhafen which is tailor-made to the requirements of our customers. In addition to that, Kiel’s geographical location fits very well into the SCA liner network”. SCA cargo ships from Sundsvall have been calling at the Ostuferhafen once a week since the beginning of the month, offloading 6,000 tons of forest products with each visit.

BV Awarded CBCA Contract by Republic of Zimbabwe

Bureau Veritas has been awarded by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Republic of Zimbabwe with the Consignment Based Conformity Assessment (CBCA) contract. The CBCA certificate shall be presented for Customs clearance on arrival in Zimbabwe. The starting up of the program will be on May 16th, 2015, in compliance with the World Trade Organization process and relevant decrees.

New CEO Showcases Marseilles Fos Initiatives

Christine Cabau Woehrel has taken up her new role as CEO of the Marseilles Fos port authority after two years heading the Port of Dunkirk. She succeeds Jean-Claude Terrier following a French transport ministry nomination that was backed by the port’s supervisory board in February and has now been confirmed by government decree. Her move marks a return to the headquarters city of CMA GGM, France’s biggest and the world’s third largest container carrier, where she worked from 1987-2011.

Kiel Gets Container Wayport Status

The Port of Kiel has gained container wayport status by being added to the liner service network of Gothenburg-based shipping company TransAtlantic. With immediate effect, ships serving on the company’s Bothnia Line between Kerni/Oulu in Finland and Zeebrugge/Antwerp in Belgium are making a weekly stop in Kiel. Container part loads destined for overseas destinations via Hamburg are now being unloaded in the Ostuferhafen. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) said “we are profiting here from our location on the Kiel Canal. Our wayport function is a good example of co-operation between Kiel and Hamburg because it means that Finnish cargo can continue to be handled by north German seaports”.

New SCA Service, N. Sweden, Port of Hamburg

The Swedish paper and timber products manufacturer Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) and its transport and logistics unit SCA Transforest have been operating a regular scheduled liner service called Container Express since March 1 2010, linking northern Sweden and the Port of Hamburg. The vessel Flintercape, with a carrying capacity of 809 TEU, sails from the ports of Sundsvall and Holmsund (Umeå) in northern Sweden to Hamburg every 10 days. The 1Aclass ice-strengthened FLINTERCAPE is 465 ft long and 71 ft wide. The vessel had not been in service since it was delivered to the Dutch Flinter Group. With a deadweight tonnage of 9,500 tons, the Flintercape has a draught of 24.5 ft. The maximum service speed is more than 18 knots.

OTAL Adds Hamburg to West Africa Schedule

On 26 November 2009, the container ship CMA CGM Iguacu called at the Port of Hamburg as part of the expanded sailing schedule for the Nigeria Express liner service operated by the OT Africa Line (OTAL). Hamburg is included for the first time in this liner service, which links the ports of Dakar, Lagos-Apapa, Lagos-Tincan and Abidjan with the European continent. The CMA CGM Iguacu is scheduled to arrive in Lagos on 18 December 2009. The inclusion of the northern European continent only occurred in July this year. The CMA CGM Iguacu was built by the HDW shipyard in Kiel in 2006.

Grande Ghana Maiden Voyage, Port of Hamburg

At the beginning of this week a ConRo vessel of the shipping company Grimaldi Lines was handled in Hamburg for the first time on its maiden voyage. This third new addition to its regular service between Hamburg and the West African ports shows the Grimaldi company strengthening its commitment to this route.
