The UK P&I Club one of the leading shipping protection and indemnity mutual insurers, has awarded Tobias Rennekamp the Robin Travis Scholar for 2015. Tobias will spend three months in the Thomas Miller London office and the offices of selected lawyers, surveyors, insurance brokers and other shipping, transport and insurance businesses. Tobias is currently an Assistant Operations Officer at Liberty One Shipmanagement GmbH & Co KG in Bremen and is actively involved in all aspects of managing its fleet of handy size bulk carriers.
Kapellskär Port All set to Receive Biggest Vessel
The Port of Kapellskär, Sweden, is being rebuilt to be able to accommodate larger vessels and meet market demands for current and future freight volumes. DHL Says Ocean Freight Rates at Turning Point

Storm Causes Deadly Grounding in the Philippines
A storm off the Philippines caused a ship grounding incident in Antique yesterday morning which claimed one casualty, local authorities reported. The 18 other seafarers involved in the incident are reported safe. The Philippines Coast Guard’s investigation revealed that M/Tug Benny and its towing barge Brian took shelter at the vicinity waters of Barangay Balud, Tobias, Antique as Tropical Depression Seniang battered the Visayas region. Both vessels drifted toward the shoreline due to strong winds and waves. Twelve crew members from Barge Brian were able to swim towards the shoreline while the remaining seven crew of M/Tug Benny transferred to the barge waiting for rescue, the coast guard said. Sietas shipyard hands over second suction dredger christened 'Eke Möbius' to Josef Möbius Bau-GmbH in Hamburg. The Eke Möbius is 118.47 metres long with a displacement of 6.8 metres and has four diesel engines that together develop 6,760 kW. It can dredge at a depth of up to 35 metres. Peene Delivers Vessel to Swedish Coast Guard
The Peene shipyard in Germany successfully completed a new series that was part of an order obtained during insolvency. The coast guard vessel (Kustbevakningen Vessel) KBV 034 was handed over to the Swedish Coast Guard, with a reflagging ceremony at dock 2 of the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Swedish Coast Guard originally placed the order for a total of four new coast guard vessels in 2008.Two of the coast guard vessels were already delivered in June and July of 2012. After the Peene shipyard filed for insolvency, that contract had to be reaffirmed.
Low Flashpoint Maritime Fuels: DNV First Up with Rules
DNV say that on 1, July 2013 they will release rules for using low flashpoint fuels such as methanol for bunker fuel. Interest for methanol as ship fuel is growing in response to the need to reduce NOx and SOx emissions. However, with a flashpoint of just 12°C, it poses safety challenges, and DNV’s new notation, an industry first, covers every aspect of safe design. Methanol is most commonly produced from natural gas but it can also be produced from a wide range of biomass. It has a lower flashpoint than conventional fuel, so additional safety barriers are required. Flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which a volatile liquid can vaporize to form an ignitable mixture in air.
Hiab Crowns World's First Crane Champ
Hiab, part of Cargotec, declared Johnny Jensen from Denmark as the first ever World Crane Champion. The Competition was held today at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, U.K. with a winning time of 2 minutes 18 seconds. Mr Jensen is taking away a prize of €25,000. The first runner up was Tobias Bergström from Sweden, with a finishing time of 2:30, and Martin Utpatel from Germany came in third place, with a time of 2:37. To become World Crane Champion, Johnny Jensen manoeuvred a state-of-the-art HIAB X-HiPro 192 through a series of obstacles.
Peene-Werft Wolgast Delivers Vessel to Swedish Coast Guard
The coast guard vessel (Kustbevakningen Vessel) KBV 033 was handed over to the Swedish Coast Guard with a reflagging ceremony at dock three of the Peene shipyard in Wolgast. A special day for P+S Werften, currently under insolvency administration: Initially the Swedish Coast Guard placed an order for a total of four newly built KBVs in 2008; but in the context of insolvency proceedings, the Peene shipyard could not fulfill the order completely without a new agreement. Two of the coast guard vessels were already delivered in June and July of 2012.
RL-K 7500 Subsea Crane
During customer days at the production plant in Rostock in January 2013 Liebherr presented its new subsea crane, type RL-K 7500. With this new knuckle boom crane the company extends its range of offshore cranes for subsea operations. The RL-K 7500 is able to lift up to 260t in the air and handle loads down to a water depth of 3,400m. The maximum rope diameter is 100mm, the maximum overturning moment of the crane is 75,000kNm. Depending on customers’ specifications, the boom configuration allows for working radii of up to 50 m.

Damen Introduces Arctic Towing Supply Vessel Concept
Last February, five Maritime Engineering bachelor students of the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) finished their Minor on Arctic Engineering. In cooperation with Damen Shipyards Group and other partners this project has now resulted, amongst others, in a new Arctic vessel: the Damen AMTSV (Arctic Modular Towing Supply Vessel). The 100-meter double acting supply ship is capable of operating in the Barents Sea year round and in the Baffin Bay and Beaufort Sea for 8 months. The AMTSV has the ability to sail through 1.6 meters of level ice at three knots.
First German-built Wind Farm Jack-up: Aeolus
It is a first in the German shipbuilding industry; the Aeolus, the first jack-up vessel for offshore wind farms designed and built in Germany, which was constructed at Sietas Shipyard for the prestigious Dutch marine engineering company Van Oord, has left the shipyard. Having passed through the Este barrage of Hamburg port, the jack-up vessel now travels along the river Elbe to Bremerhaven. Ballast water management poses problems in design and operation of ships. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers solutions with design, type approval and trouble-shooting. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) denotes collectively techniques for solving equations describing the physics of fluid flow. CFD is by now widely known and accepted in the maritime industry, but mostly associated with flows around the hull and propellers, for example in the context of designing more fuel-efficient ships. However, CFD is in many ways far more versatile than classical model testing.
