The winners of the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association’s (WFSA) Safe Affordable Ferry Competition, as determined by a panel of judges, have been announced by WFSA Executive Director Dr. Roberta Weisbrod. The requirements of this year’s competition were to design a safe and affordable RoPax ferry able to transport 185 passengers plus a crew of 15 and cargo carrying vehicles on a route linking five islands surrounding Indonesia’s Savu Sea. Taking home first place honors is the University of Strathclyde, which will earn a $5,000 prize for its Savutec ferry.

The growing popularity of “Maritime Potpourri” Conference organized by the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) was evident yet again on 25th July, 2015 when a bigger turnout of participants ensued at the well-known venue, the Maritime Training Institute Auditorium of the Shipping Corporation of India, Mumbai. One major reason being that vital and pertinent issues are focused at these events, issues that have a strong bearing on the day-to-day operations of mariners. Another being that this conference brings together not just the mariners, nautical architects, and marine engineers but also top officials from the administration, regulators, coast guards, navy, etc., thus often offering an opportunity to sort out problems on-the-spot and have things put in right perspective.

Issues which affecting the employment and employability of Indian Seafarers came into focus. Mr. S. Hajara, one of the wll-known names in the shipping industry while delivering the keynote address highlighted the contribution and achievements of Indian seafarers. Capt. Vinay Singh emphasized the need for more quality officers for seniors ranks while also highlighting that the time taken to pass the competency examinations by our officers and engineers at junior level is far more  as compared to officers appearing for examination overseas.

Student teams from six maritime universities and schools have submitted proposals for the Second Annual Design Competition for Safe Affordable Ferries sponsored by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association. A panel of five judges will review the submissions and will announce the winners by early Fall 2014. The top prize is $5,000 with second and third prizes also to be awarded. The student teams were asked to submit a design for a ferry to transport up to 200 passengers and ro-ro cargo between Lae and Kavieng in Papua New Guinea (with several intermediate stops), a distance of 350 nautical miles.

The World Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) announced the coming year’s challenging international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry. The goal of the design competition is to elicit new approaches for ferry design in the developing world as well as to encourage designers to enter this arena for which there is a need and an emerging market. Last year $10,000 in prizes was awarded, with the top prizes of $5,000 and $3,000 awarded at the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Annual Meeting to the student teams from the University of British Columbia, Canada and the Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune, India respectively. The results of the competition were reported widely in the maritime professional media.

Today the results of the World Ferry Safety Association international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry were announced.
