Caterpillar: Further Division Consolidation

Caterpillar Inc. will combine two divisions dealing with power and energy, adding more detail to a restructuring announced last year, and plans to complete this by June 2016, the company said on Wednesday. Caterpillar Marine and Power Systems was one of the most active companies at the 2013 International Workboat Show in New Orleans, debuting several new products that are compliant with EPA Tier 3 and 4 regulations, and finalizing the acquisition of propulsion equipment manufacturer Johan Walter Berg AB. New Cat® Powered Marine Hybrid System

Developed for all engine platforms with electrical specialists Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), the system package utilizes AKA’s XeroPoint Hybrid marine propulsion system and provides fuel savings of up to 25% and even emissions reductions. A recent CARB study found a 73% reduction in PM, 50% reduction in NOx & 26% reduction in CO2. Significant improvements are also seen in performance, control and noise levels. Caterpillar to Acquire Berg Propulsion

Caterpillar Inc. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Johan Walter Berg AB, including its core brand of Berg Propulsion, a leading manufacturer of mechanically and electrically driven propulsion systems and marine controls for ships. With the acquisition, Caterpillar will transition from selling only engines and generators to providing complete marine propulsion package systems. Headquartered in Öckerö Islands, Sweden, Berg has designed and manufactured heavy-duty marine thrusters and controllable pitch propellers since 1929.

Caterpillar Sponsors Ocean Shark Research

Caterpillar agree multi-year partnership with OCEARCH to help global research on sharks, key members of the ocean's ecological system. "Most people think sharks are invincible," said OCEARCH founder Chris Fischer . "But they are in real danger*. We must find a sustainable path forward because sharks play a crucial role in maintaining balance in the delicate oceanic ecosystem. Fischer's vessel, the MV OCEARCH, already relies on Cat® power in the water. The boat with its team of scientists and crew runs on two Cat engines and has three Cat generators on board that power an at-sea laboratory, custom-built hydraulic lift and 55,000-pound capacity research platform with the capability of handling 5,000-pound sharks.
