Pacific Calls For Decarbonising Shipping By 2050

In a comprehensive analysis of what is needed to decarbonise international shipping by 2035, the report recommends setting a clear, ambitious emissions-reduction target to drive decarbonisation of maritime transport, supporting the realization of emissions-reduction targets with a comprehensive set of policy measures and providing smart financial incentives to advance the decarbonisation of maritime shipping. “The OECD report, closely followed by the call of the European Shippers Association for a target of decarbonisation by 2035, vindicates our Pacific member states’ principled stance on the IMO debate on shipping emission reduction.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has dodged a decision on the setting of a new global target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, proposed by the Marshall Islands. The environmental lobby group Transport & Environment (T&E)  accused the IMO of falling to "procedural excuses" and ignoring obligations. The proposal was initially announced last month, with Marshall Islands' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tony de Brum having said at the time that the industry could grow to represent 6 to 14 percent of global emissions if "urgent action" was not taken.

Marshall Islands Urges Cap on Shipping Emissions

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (Marshall Islands) Monday issued an emailed press release calling for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to set a new global target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the international shipping industry. The tiny South Pacific nation is the world's third biggest shipping registry, but is increasingly threatened by rising sea levels linked to climate change. Now the Islands is using its position as the world's third largest shipping registry to call on the IMO to set a new global target for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping, a growing sector currently left out of international climate negotiations. "International shipping must be part of the action.

Marshall Islands Calls for New Emissions Target

Tony de Brum

In a submission to the International Maritime Organization, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, currently the world’s third largest shipping registry, has called for the setting of a new global target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, a growing sector currently left out of international climate negotiations. “The goal of keeping global temperature rise under 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius requires action from all countries, and all sectors of the global economy. International shipping must be part of the action.

Rising Seas Wash Japanese War Dead from Pacific Island Graves

Rising sea levels have washed the remains of at least 26 Japanese World War Two soldiers from their graves on a low-lying Pacific archipelago, the foreign minister of the Marshall Islands said on Friday. "There are coffins and dead people being washed away from graves. It's that serious," Tony de Brum told reporters on the sidelines of U.N. climate change talks in Germany. Twenty-six skeletons have been found on Santo Island after high tides battered the archipelago from February to April, he said, adding that more may be found. Unexploded bombs and other military equipment have also washed up in recent months. "We think they are Japanese soldiers," de Brum said. "We had the exhumed skeletons sampled by the U.S.
