NAPA BoD Adds Svensen
NAPA, a maritime software, services, and data analysis provider, has announced the appointment of Tor E. Svensen, Vice President, Marine Technology at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to its board. Svensen has previously served as CEO of DNV GL Maritime, chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and professor at the University of Strathclyde.As CEO of DNV GL Maritime, Svensen helped to outline a consistent vision of shipping's technology-enabled future, which achieved sustained, empirical improvements in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.
Svensen retires from DNV GL
Tor E. Svensen, Group Executive Vice President at DNV GL, has decided to retire effective from August 1, 2016. Svensen is a ubiquitous figure in maritime circles, and he will continue to work in the maritime industry and will, amongst other things, take up a role as professor at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, focusing on education and research related to safety at sea. Svensenâs career at DNV GL spanned more than 20years and saw him lead the Maritime Business for more than a decade.

DNV GL DSJ500 Jack-up Design for Dalian
DNV GL presented Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd (DSIC) with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for their new DSJ-500 jack-up design for drilling in depths of up to 500 feet. Tor E. DNV GL Rejigs Top Deck
DNV GL Group has appointed Tor Svensen as Group Executive Vice President. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen will succeed Tor Svensen as Chief Executive Officer of its Maritime business area. Both will report to the incoming Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen, starting August 1, 2015. Ørbeck-Nilssen has served as COO and Senior Vice President of DNV GLâs Maritime business area since 2013. He will now take on the new role as CEO and continue to operate out of the maritime headquarter in Hamburg, Germany. Tor E. Svensen has been the CEO and President of DNV GL - Maritime since 2003. In his new role as Group EVP he will support the Group President & CEO Remi Eriksen with particular focus on developing customer relationships and strategic projects for the DNV GL Group.
DNV GL Grants AIP for HHIâs SkyBench
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has received an Approval in Principle (AIP) certificate from Classification society DNV GL for its SkyBench concept for increasing capacity of mega box ships. The result of development conducted by HHI and work with DNV GL, the certificate confirms that the concept complies with the DNV GL rules for the classification of ships. HHIâs Senior Executive Vice President & COO of Shipbuilding Division, Yoon Moon-kyoon, was presented with the certificate by Tor E. Svensen, CEO of DNV GL â Maritime, at a ceremony at the DNV GL booth at Nor-Shipping.
DNV GL Sees Hybrid Propulsion, Connectivity as Hot Trends
Hybrid propulsion systems and connected ship solutions are emerging technologies that are gaining ground faster than expected, according to Tor E. Svensen, CEO DNV GL â Maritime, giving an update on the classification society's Shipping 2020 report. "While operational efficiency and emissions reductions are the main motivators behind these developments, the update shows that the future fuel mix will be much more diverse," Svensen said. Though LNG as a ship fuel was one of the standouts in the 2012 report, its prediction of up to 1,000 LNG-fueled vessels by 2020 will most likely not be met, due to continuing high investment costs and slower development of infrastructure. However, as more bunkering options come in place, growth could accelerate, he added.

CMA to Host Cyber Security Panel

Ahrenkiel Steamship Consolidates Entire Fleet at DNV GL
Ahrenkiel Steamship, the newly formed German ship management company, will consolidate its entire fleet at DNV GL. Nick Topham managing director of Ahrenkiel Steamship and Tor E. Svensen, CEO of DNV GL - Maritime, signed the cooperation agreement at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg. Ahrenkiel Steamship currently has 62 ships under technical management, all of which will join the DNV GL fleet in service. Plans for developing the fleet managed by Ahrenkiel Steamship are already underway.
SMM 2014 Witnesses Record Turnout
SMM was another full success. With more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world, including 150 first-timers, with 50,000 industry visitors and roughly 90,000 square metres of exhibition space, SMM has demonstrated once again what it means to be the leading international trade fair of the maritime industry. CEO Outlines DNV GL's Key Themes at SMM

Seaspan Awarded New Triple-E Rating
Containership owner Seaspan has received DNVâs new Triple-E rating. Triple-E is a voluntary self-improvement tool designed to help ship operators improve their organizational performance, identify ways to minimize their environmental impact and optimize their fuel consumption, thereby reducing costs. Seaspanâs vessel MOL EMERALD is the first ship to receive the rating, which was handed over at a ceremony in Vancouver, Canada by DNV President Tor E. Svensen. The Triple-E rating is based on the capture of environmental and operational data from ships. It is a voluntary service which delivers a rating from 4 to 1 (1 is best) based on an independent assessment of a shipâs environmental performance.
