Classification society ClassNK has issued a Statement of Compliance to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Marine Service Co., Ltd. based at Changxing Island, Dalian, confirming that it is in compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009. MOL Ccomfort Casualty Investigation Update

ClassNK Executive Vice President Toshitomo Matsui has announced  that the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team’s analysis and investigation will take longer than initially expected, and will delay the release of its findings.   The team, which began investigating the MOL Comfort casualty in Mid-June, had expected to complete its analysis and investigation of the casualty in early September. However, the time consuming nature of some of the analysis work has forced the team to revise its forecast for completion. The team continues to carry out its exhaustive investigation into the cause of the casualty, and now expects to release its findings to the public by the end of October 2013.

MOL Comfort Casualty Investigation Update

Under the leadership of ClassNK Executive Vice President Toshitomo Matsui, the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team established in response to the June 17, 2013 casualty involving MOL Comfort in the Indian Ocean continues to work in close contact with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and government authorities to determine the cause of casualty. As has been reported by MOL, the fore section of the MOL Comfort, which was expected to provide investigators with valuable information on the cause of the casualty, sank on July 11, 2013. In view of these unfortunate circumstances, the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team will expedite the investigation into the cause of the incident, and expects to consolidate its preliminary findings by early September 2013.

MOL Comfort Casualty Investigation Update

Under the leadership of ClassNK Executive Vice President Toshitomo Matsui, the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team continues to cooperate with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and government authorities to determine the cause of casualty. As part of the ongoing investigation, an exhaustive review of the MOL Comfort’s design as well as the plan approval process has been completed. This review has verified the results of the plan approval process, and confirmed that the vessel design fully complied with all requirements of the ClassNK Rules and IACS regulations. ClassNK issues World’s First Statement of Compliance

ClassNK  has announced  that it has issued the world’s first Statement of Compliance (SOC) for a ship recycling facility to Jiangmen Zhongxin Shipbreaking & Steel Co., Ltd. The Statement of Compliance issued by ClassNK certifies that the facility and its recycling procedures are fully in compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (Hong Kong Convention). This marks the first time that a ship recycling yard has achieved certification in line with the convention.

ClassNK Announces Boardroom Reorganization

Tokyo - Japanese ship classification society Nippon Ippon Kyokai (ClassNK) has announced the following changes in its Executive Board of Directors, effective March 22, 2012. Executive Vice President Hiroshige Kitada has retired, and two executive officers, Tetsushi Agata and Tetsuya Kinoshita, General Managers of the General Affairs Department and Planning Department, respectively, have been promoted to the position of managing director. ClassNK Reorganizes Management Team

Classification society ClassNK has announced that it will reorganize its Board of Directors as part of a larger corporate reorganization, effective July 1, 2011. As part of the reorganization, ClassNK’s four current Managing Directors -- Shosuke Kakubari, Koichi Fujiwara, Takuya Yoneya, and Yasushi Nakamura -- will be promoted to Executive Vice Presidents and take up positions alongside current Executive Vice Presidents Hiroshige Kitada and Toshitomo Matsui. In addition to the promotion of the four executives, ClassNK will also establish a new second tier of Operating Officers who will oversee the day to day operations of the 110 year old classification society. Updated “Good Maintenance Onboard Ships”

ClassNK has just released the latest updated version of Good Maintenance Onboard Ships. First published in 1994, this latest version of the booklet has been expanded to incorporate ideas and comments from port state control authorities, shipowners, and mariners, as well as extensive data compiled by the Society itself. This publication provides a set of four checklists for shipmasters, crew, shipowners, and other key personnel that covers every aspect of statutory requirements with clear references to the relevant regulations. These four checklists cover items essential to routine maintenance, PSC inspections, Safety Management Systems, and International Ship and Port Facility Security.
