IMO Event Inspires Maritime Women

“Use your power to empower”. “Say what you’re thinking”. “Listen to the ‘yes’ voice in your head”. “Return every phone call every day”. “Believe in yourself”.This was the advice given by a wide variety of inspiring maritime women sharing their experiences of entering, working and leading in the maritime world at a special on "Women, ports and facilitation" at International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters, London (10 April).The speakers presented on, and answered questions about, their work and the future for women in the field – identifying a series of key issues and recommendations.

WISTA Pledges for Inclusion of Women in Shipping

Iro Gidakou Becomes First female Captain in Cyprus

WISTA International Elects New Board Members

Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) elected Connie Roozen, Director of C&B More as Treasurer and Angie Hartmann, Vice President Crew Affairs, Starbulk  as Board Member, to the WISTA International Executive Committee.Sanjam Gupta, Director Sitara Shipping, was re-elected to a third term on the Executive Committee. Kathy Metcalf, CEO of the Chamber of Shipping of America, was honored as the 2018 WISTA International Personality of the Year.Connie Roozen is Director at C& B More, a tax consultancy firm. Roozen has served as Treasurer for WISTA the Netherlands since 2014.

Portugal Joins WISTA International

The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) has welcome Portugal to the global network of executive women in shipping.The launch of WISTA Portugal was announced today by Ana Paula Vitorino, Portugal’s Minister of the Sea at Portugal Shipping. WISTA Portugal joins 44 other National WISTA Associations (NWAs).“WISTA International has had a strong relationship with Portugal’s women in shipping,” said WISTA International President Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou. “We are proud to formally include Portugal in the WISTA family.

WISTA USA Supports Sea Turtle Conservation

Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) USA Florida Chapter participated in a sea turtle release with the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) on July 26, 2018.Forty nine WISTA members and guests attended the sea turtle hatchling release, which raised $1000 for the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program.“As maritime professionals, WISTA members understand the significant role we can play to protect the habitats, nesting areas, and life cycle of sea creatures.

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) has announced the re-launch of WISTA Japan. "We are delighted to welcome Japan back to our WISTA family. Japan plays an important role in the maritime industry, being the second ship owing nation in the world and we are positive that WISTA Japan will contribute greatly to the aims and mission of WISTA International," said Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, President of WISTA International. Spotlight on Women in Maritime Security

"The bottom line is that doubling your talent pool just makes sense", said Chris Trelawny,  International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s special Adviser on Maritime Security, as he opened the Women in Maritime Security conference held at IMO Headquarters (24 May). Women are increasingly present at sea, as they defy traditional expectations. Their full and meaningful participation in the economy, political decision-making, and society is key to addressing maritime challenges, but gender equity in the maritime space is too often overlooked.

Damen's Boer Secures WISTA Post

Damen’s Head of Communications, Sylvia Boer, has recently been appointed President of the Netherlands chapter of WISTA – the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association. WISTA the Netherlands was founded in 2000 and currently has 140 members from across the maritime industry. WISTA the Netherlands focuses on a number of priority topics affecting the industry. Amongst these are sustainability, new technologies, big data, health & safety, cyber security, block chain, developing cultural sensitivity and last, but by no means least, clean oceans.

Cargill Partners with Four NGOs on Shipping Sustainability

Dry bulk shipper Cargill said it is partnering with four NGOs to advance sustainability initiatives and increase accountability across the ocean shipping industry. The company said it has aligned with the Global Maritime Forum, the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, the North American Environment Protection Association and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association in an effort to spearhead industry-wide progress toward safer and more efficient international shipping.

Supporting Maritime Women of the Caribbean

Work to support women in the Caribbean maritime industry is underway with the first conference of the Women in Maritime Association Caribbean (WiMAC) taking place in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (5-9 September). Under the theme "Charting the course for generations of women" the conference is drafting a strategic and regional agenda to support WiMAC’s mission to foster the development and participation of women in the maritime sector and contribute to the growth of the industry within the region.

Women Are Moving up in the Maritime Industry

Historically, women have played only a minor role in shipping, shipbuilding and related areas up to the present, but decision makers in the industry are now beginning to recognize their potential in view of the current shortage of skilled people. Women are a major focus at the Maritime Career Market held at SMM. A highlight is presentation of the “Personality of the Year 2016” award by the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA). More women means more profit, as shown in a study by the Peterson Institute in Washington published in February 2016. The more women a company employs in middle and senior management, the better its earnings. The rule of thumb is that an increase in female executives from zero to 30 percent boosts profitability by 15 percent.

Liodden Named Director of Nor-Shipping

Norwegian Trade Fairs has appointed Birgit Liodden as the new Director of Nor-Shipping. Liodden, still just 32 years old, holds a CV that includes tenures at Wilh. Wilhelmsen, external consultancy for OECD and SeaTrucks Nigeria, and numerous board level positions for, amongst others, Maritime Forum Oslofjord and the Norwegian Sea Rescue Academy. She was awarded the WISTA (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) Leadership Award in 2012. Liodden was also President of YoungShip Norway between 2009 and 2011…

On 17th April they organised a workshop on "Manage your customers" at India's premier Business school SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. “ Managing Difficult Customers “ was such an eye opener on how we, while selling ,  focus only on  pushing down prices , not realizing that in doing so, we are  not adding any value to the client or to our business in the long run.
