Royal Caribbean Takes the Lead on Fuel Cell Tech

As the maritime world rapidly evolves to incorporate increasingly clean and efficient power sources onboard ships at sea, the cruise industry is emerging as a clear leader in the sector, driven by the high-profile nature of its ships and the often pristine environments to which they traverse. ABB Transformers for the Most Powerful Wind Turbines

ABB will deploy 40 special transformers to equip wind turbines for an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. The MHI Vestas Offshore Wind turbines are 195 m (640 ft) tall - around two-thirds the height of the Eiffel Tower - and weigh 1000 metric tons, approximately double a fully-loaded Airbus A380 plane. Its 80 m (262 ft) rotor blades sweep through an area equivalent of three soccer fields and can produce up to eight megawatts of power, making it the most powerful wind turbine in the world.

GL RC Certifies CG Transformer

Wind Farm Hi-capacity Switchgear Introduced by ABB

New giant offshore wind turbines need specialized equipment to connect to the electricity grid to minimize power losses. As offshore wind farms move towards deploying higher capacity turbines of 5MW and above, energy losses during energy transfer will escalate unless higher voltages are used for power evacuation. This is leading to increasing applications of high voltage equipment in the wind energy market. ABB's intensive R&D efforts have yielded the appropriate solution by fulfilling this demand with the new and compact HV multi-functional module PASS M00 which can be inserted and fitted in narrow spaces such as a wind tower or nacelle. the cable ending. The first steel blank cut has been made at Nordic's Warnemünde shipyard on the largest offshore transformer platform of its type currently under construction worldwide. Wind Farm transformer platform SylWin alpha will be installed west of Sylt to provide the grid connection for DanTysk and Butendiek offshore
wind farms. In accord with the date announced at the contract signing in February this year, the first steel blank cut was made in the presence of representatives of the client, Siemens Energy, and the end customer, TenneT, at the Rostock-Warnemünde yard.

ABB Drive System in UK Tidal Turbines R&D

The world’s first drive train test facility for tidal turbines and marine renewable technologies at the UK’s National Renewable Energy Centre (NAREC) is powered by a state-of-the-art ABB drive system. The $20 million facility is part of the UK’s National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in the north of England. Narec is a government-backed center for researching, developing and testing renewable energy and low carbon power generation technologies such as wind, solar, tidal and wave.

Fugro Places ROV Contract with ISE

ISE has received a contract from Fugro Chance Inc. to update their Hammerhead ROV with current technologies. The ROV frame with 5000 meter foam pack has been delivered to ISE, and will be outfitted with an ISE 150HP propulsion system, ISE control system and an electric power system. The propulsion system will include two redundant 75 hp hydraulic power units, hydraulic control units, proportional valve packs, thrusters control units, and eight thrusters. The electric power system will include a power distribution unit, power tray, and ground fault monitor on the surface; and a termination can, transformer can and deboost transformer on the ROV. The ISE control system will consist of a fiber-optic command, control and data distribution system running ISE’s ACE control software.

When it comes to taking thousands of passengers on the luxury cruise of a lifetime, it’s reassuring to have a name like GE ensuring you a smooth and pleasant journey. While MSC with its next generation ships may be setting off to conquer more distant waters, it won’t be making the voyage alone:  GE Marine will continue to propel the way. Since confirming in 2014 the order for two new cruise liners to be delivered by Fincantieri in 2017 and 2018, GE has now been selected to lead the Italian consortium that will power MSC Crociere’s planned ‘Seaside’ platform.

Offshore-Inland Completes Repairs on Celebrity Millennium

Offshore-Inland Marine & Oilfield Services completed a repair job for Celebrity Cruise Lines in November 2003. Celebrity’s Millennium required replacement of a 20-ton main propulsion transformer during a planned port visit at Port Everglades, Fla. Offshore Inland responded in spite of the strict time frame requirement to cut a large access opening in the vessel’s side, remove the existing transformer, install a new Celebrity provided transformer and close the access opening all in less than 17 hours. Offshore-Inland developed a plan and sent its team of highly skilled workers to both ride the vessel to Port Everglades and to meet the vessel in Port Everglades to effect the work.

ABB Wins Azipod Propulsion Orders

ABB has signed contracts worth to supply Azipod propulsion, power generation and distribution systems for a total of eleven vessels. They are being built by Admiralty Shipyard, Aker Yards, Fincantieri, Meyer Werft and for Sovcomflot, MMC Norilsk Nickel, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Crociere and Holland America Line. Two Arctic shuttle tankers for Sovcomflot will be equipped with two 8.5 MW Azipod units with ice class LU6 according to Russian Maritime Register rules. The vessels will be built at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg, Russia and they will be designed to use the DA (Double Acting) concept. The ABB delivery also includes medium voltage generators, main switchboards, transformers, and frequency converters.

Diesel-electric Propulsion for 4 Semi-sub Ships

CSBC Corporation Taiwan has chosen Siemens to supply diesel-electric propulsion systems and other accessories for four 65,000-ton semi-submersible deck cargo vessels (SSDCVs). The country’s largest shipyard is building the vessels for a customer in Singapore. Compared to conventional mechanical propulsion technologies, Siemens’ diesel-electric system will reduce fuel costs by up to 15 percent, resulting from unique power management features, the manufacturer said. Likewise, associated propellers, rudders and thrusters will improve the vessel’s maneuverability when operating at low speeds. GE Powers Diadema Cruise Ship

Fincantieri shipyard to equip in-board propulsion for Carnival and Costa vessels, GE’s Power Conversion business has helped the shipyard successfully deliver the Costa Diadema cruise ship to the Carnival Corporation on October 28, 2014. Constructed at the Marghera Shipyards near Venice, Italy, the cruise ship, 306-meters in length and 132,500 gross tonnage in weight, has the capacity to carry up to 5,000 passengers. The Costa Diadema cruise ship benefits from GE’s latest technology and vast experience from the cruise industry. Cavotec, ABB Partner on Shore-to-ship Power

Cavotec and ABB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly offer complete shore-to-ship power solutions globally. Such solutions allow vessels to plug into onshore power supply and shut down their engines, eliminating noxious emissions, noise and vibrations while berthed in ports that are often located in city surrounds. The technology ensures a seamless switch from on-board generation to shore power supply, without disruption of services including lighting, heating and refrigeration.

Ultra-Deepwater & Remote Subsea Factories R&D

ABB has entered a US$100-million research and development joint industry program (JIP) with Statoil to develop solutions for transmission, distribution and power conversion systems designed to power and control subsea pumps and gas compressors at depths of 3,000 meters, and over vast distances. The agreement is seen as an important step on the path to develop complete subsea oil and gas producing facilities. Statoil is leading the JIP on behalf of other participating oil companies, while ABB is responsible for developing the new technology.

Harris Pye Completes Brazilian Offshore Project

In just 90 days, the Harris Pye Group successfully completed the survey and upgrade of Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc’s (DODI) dynamically positioned drillship, the Ocean Clipper. All work was completed within schedule. Totalling 247,235 man hours and utilising a 600-plus workforce, the contract was one of the largest offshore oil and gas projects for the South Wales headquartered company. Despite the time-critical schedule, extraordinarily high man hours and large workforce, safety standards were superb and there were no serious accidents or injuries to any personnel.
