Steel Cut for UECC Hybrid PCTC

Norway-based provider of shortsea RoRo transportation United European Car Carriers (UECC)  held a steel cutting ceremony for its first newbuild pure car truck carrier (PCTC) on order with China Ship Building Trading and Jiangnan Shipyard Group.Representatives from UECC, NYK, Japan Marine Science, MUFG Bank, DNV-GL, SDARI, CSSC and CSTC gathered at the Jiangnan Shipyard in in Shanghai on the 8th of January 2020 to witness and celebrate the steel cutting ceremony for UECC’s first Battery Hybrid LNG Powered PCTC.Earlier, UECC, jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, has signed a contract to construct three new generation PCTC with China Ship Building Trading Co., Ltd and Jiangnan Shipyard Group Co.

Malaysia Backs Maritime Silk Road

Malaysia is ready for greater collaboration and cooperation with China with regard to Maritime Silk Road (MSR) proposal delivered by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said that his Ministry has identified a few ports in Malaysia to be part of the MSR. The sources in the Ministry said that Malaysian side is supportive on the incentive of building the Maritime Silk Road and have been keeping an open mind on it. Malaysia is a trading nation, and it has a number of sea ports, including, for example, Port Klang. Malaysia is in the process of developing port cities collaboration between Qinzhou Port (of China) and the Kuantan Port (of Malaysia).

Ross & Baruzzini Appoints Transportation Director

Allan Shapiro has joined Ross & Baruzzini as Vice President and Director of the Transportation Group. In this role, he is responsible for managing the firm’s aviation, seaport, rail transit, and surface transportation practice. Allan brings to Ross & Baruzzini over 35 years of experience in the transportation field.  He recently served as the Senior Transportation Manager for L-3 Communications and previously as the Officer-in-Charge and as the senior transportation management professional for several national architectural, engineering and program management firms. USMMA, Crowley Announce Appointment

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Crowley Maritime Corporation are pleased to announce that Ronald M. Katims has been appointed as the first holder of the Crowley Chair in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. The Crowley Chair was established through a $2 million endowment by Crowley Maritime in memory of Thomas B. Crowley, Sr., the late leader of the firm. Katims has had an illustrious career in the port and transportation field. He has extensive senior executive, engineering, and consulting experience in the containerization environment. He has worked for and with many international companies and agencies in the forefront of developing intermodal transportation.
