DESMI’s Aquaculture Treatment Systems Validated by DNV

Source: DESMI

DESMI has secured third-party validation for the effectiveness of its aquaculture UV treatment systems from DNV.This development moves beyond the traditional certification provided by the Norwegian Veterinarian Institute (NVI) which verifies UV doses of at least 25 mJ/cm2. With many aquaculture operations requiring higher UV doses, typically ranging from 70 to 200 mJ/cm2, DESMI says its validation from DNV provides a much-needed layer of credibility and assurance.Historically…

Ferry Tales: Having a Ferry Good Time

At the most basic level, all new construction projects should offer an improved customer experience. While there are many challenges for designers and builders, complying with the latest ADA accessibility guidelines is a given. Likewise, customers have an elevated level of expectation for improved technology to augment their ride. WiFi, power ports, automated ticketing or counting systems, and onboard information displays are all fast becoming necessities, rather than amenities. (Courtesy: Vigor

Despite of some of the lowest fuel prices experienced in the last eight years, demand for ferry construction is at a seemingly all time high. The focus on building new ferries kicked off in early 2013 and the sustained interest is the continued result of an unleashing of pent up demand. Fleets have been aging and infrastructure needs to be built up in order to accommodate the future demand for commuter ferry travel once fuel prices return to and surpass their once familiar norms.

Governments Must Act on Ballast Water Chaos: ICS

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) notes Finland’s significant announcement that it has acceded to the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention. This suggests that this new regime, to protect local ecosystems from the impacts of invasive species, will enter into force worldwide during September 2017. ICS therefore reiterates that it is now more vital than ever that IMO Member States finalise the revision of the G8 Type Approval Guidelines for treatment systems at the next session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee this October. ICS Chairman, Esben Poulsson said: “We must ensure that shipowners can have absolute…

ICS to Pursue Critical Issues at IMO's MEPC Meet

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has made a number of submissions to a critical meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Committee (MEPC) which begins in London next week (18-22 April). These address further measures to reduce the sector’s CO2 emissions, outstanding problems with the implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, and the need for an immediate IMO decision on whether or not ships will have to use 0.5% sulphur fuel in 2020. ICS says its immediate priority is to help ensure that the new global CO2 data collection system is adopted by IMO as soon as possible. This will then facilitate the possible development of additional CO2 reduction measures.

BWM Convention Doesn't Resolve U.S. Issues - ICS

ICS notes that the IMO Secretary General has announced that the Ballast Water Management Convention will enter into force worldwide from 24 November 2016, following ratification by Indonesia (subject to IMO’s verification of the gross tonnage data relating to Indonesia’s registered fleet). ICS believes it is now incumbent upon IMO to finalise the revision of the G8 Type Approval Guidelines as soon as possible, in order to ensure that shipowners can have absolute confidence that the expensive equipment they will soon have to install will be effective in treating ballast water conditions normally encountered during worldwide operations and be regarded as fully compliant during Port State Control inspections.

To Scrub, or Not to Scrub -That Is the Question

Nicholas Confuorto

On January 1, 2015, the IMO Annex VI, ECA zone requirements came into effect. Ship owners and operators are now faced with having to decide between switching to a lower sulfur fuel or embracing alternate solutions such as exhaust gas cleaning systems (Scrubbers) and LNG. Worldwide, about 300 scrubbing systems have already been sold to date for marine applications. Many of these have been sold for vessels operating in the North European ECA and many for the global cruise/ferry industry (both in the US and Europe). The U.S.
