Langh Tech Debuts New Water Treatment Systems

Langh Tech’s new generation of water treatment systems has been launched with upgraded membrane technology to increase water cleaning capacity. In 2017, Langh Tech launched a second generation of water treatment systems based on a new type of membrane filter elements. With the new elements, Langh Tech said a 50 percent increase in water cleaning capacity can be reached compared to the previous elements, without increasing the size of the water treatment units. Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger

Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. The build contract includes an option for a second ATB. Once built and deployed, Crowley will operate the ATB under a long-term charter with Alaska-based Petro Star Inc.…

ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Installation of BWT Systems

Ballast Water Treatment Systems

The U.S. Coast Guard seeks consultation with interested and affected parties in establishing a program to approve ballast water treatment systems. The intent is to ensure that ballast water treatment systems approved for use on vessels will meet the ballast water discharge standard the Coast Guard will be implementing in the near future. Comments and related material should be submitted by December 3, 2004. 69 Fed. Reg. 47453 (August 5, 2004).

California SLC Recommends Delay BWT Standards

The California State Lands Commission's (SLC) report '2013 Assessment of the Efficacy, Availability, and Environmental Impacts of Ballast Water Treatment Systems for Use in California Waters' concludes that no shipboard ballast water treatment systems are currently available to meet all of California’s performance standards for the discharge of ballast water. Commission staff reviewed 75 shipboard ballast water treatment systems for this analysis, however, significant limitations in the existing data hamper the ability of Commission staff to determine if shipboard ballast water treatment systems are available to meet California’s performance standards.

World’s First Offshore Barge with Built-in BWTS

The BALPURE ballast water treatment system, which received Type Approval in July 2011, has been selected for use on two flattop oceangoing heavy deck cargo barges. The Type-Approved BALPURE ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has been selected for use on two oceangoing heavy deck cargo barges being constructed for Norwegian-based Greenway Shipping by Dalian Shipyard, at its shipyard in Dalian, China. The 9,025 dwt oceangoing barges will reportedly be the first new offshore barges to install the BALPURE system.

BWT – Amiad to Supply Disc Filtration to Calgon Carbon

Amiad signs supply agreement with Calgon Carbon Corp. MHI Order for Ballast Water Treatment System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order from Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) for conversion and installation work of a ballast water treatment system on NYK's Auriga Leader, a pure car/truck carrier built by MHI and already in service. The work on order, to be completed by the end of June, will be performed at MHI's Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works in Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Yokohama Ship Repair & Marine Engineering Department and the "Ballast Water Treatment Project Team" are located.

USCG Accepts BWTS as Alternate Management Systems

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the acceptance of nine ballast water treatment systems today as Alternate Management Systems (AMS) in compliance with the service’s March 2012 final rule for Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged (SLOSBWD) in U.S. waters. AMS acceptance by the Coast Guard is a temporary designation given to a ballast water treatment system approved by a foreign administration. USCG Denies DESMI’s BWTS Test Appeal

The U.S. Coast Guard has denied ballast water treatment systems manufacturer DESMI Ocean Guard’s appeal regarding the USCG’s initial decision to reject the use of the MPN test method in type approval testing of ballast water treatment systems. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) announced that its electrolysis-based ballast water treatment system, HiBallast, was accepted as Alternative Management System (AMS) by the United States Coast Guard. This comes after the company won type approval from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2011. According to the Standards for Living Organisms in Ships' Ballast Water Discharged in U.S. Waters, Final Rule, it is mandatory for all new ships built from December 2013 coming into and going out of U.S. ports to install approved ballast water treatment systems.

Hyundai Heavy Delivers VLCC with Electrolysis BW System

On Jan. 10, Hyundai Heavy Industries handed over a 317,000DWT VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) to Oman Shipping Company (OSC). The ship, measuring 1,093 ft in length, 197 ft in height and 99.7 ft in depth, is the first VLCC with the new electrolysis ballast water treatment system that can treat as much as 100,000 ton ballast water. Ballast water is sea water used to stabilize hull balance when unloading cargo, and to maintain optimal vessel speed. The seawater can contain bacteria, local plankton, mud and sand from the unloading port where the ballast water has been taken in.

MOL Installs Ballast Water Treatment System on VLCC

In front of the VLCC Libra Trader, which recently had a new ballast water treatment system installed, representatives of the vessel’s management company, MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd., and the shipyard pose for a commemorative shot.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced completion of work to install a ballast water treatment system on the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Libra Trader at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. On January 10, the company announced plans to install the system on a VLCC ahead of IMO installation compulsion. MOL is the first Japanese shipping company to install such a system for existing VLCC. Keppel Shipyard has timely delivered the vessel as committed and Libra Trader has already returned to service, and the ballast water treatment system will be tested and adjusted during operation.

Alfa Laval Bolsters BWTS Retrofit Training

The retrofit market for ballast water treatment systems is poised to boom in the coming years, says Alfa Laval, who is actively training its network of engineering partners for its PureBallast system in order to ensure that requisite design and installation skills are in place to meet demand. When the retrofit market for ballast water treatment systems gains speed, the ability of suppliers to deliver treatment systems will only be one part of satisfying it. Specific knowledge and skills will also have to be in place among design and installation partners. ALPURE Ballast Water Treatment System Successfully Completes Corrosion Testing Program

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. – 9 March 2011 – The BALPURE ballast water treatment systemfrom Severn Trent De Nora satisfies corrosion test recommendations of the IMO MEPC 59/2/16. The corrosion testing, performed by an independent third-party institute, proved the BALPURE system has no effect on coated steel, naval bronze and Cu-Ni alloys. Testing proved an insignificant effect on bare steel – so small that the acceleration of corrosion due to the presence of free chlorine has minimal practical implications in ballast tanks.

NEI Treatment Systems Receives Ballast Water Management Certification

After many months of review and many years of testing, NEI Treatment Systems’ Venturi Oxygen StrippingTM (VOS) ballast water treatment system has been issued a Type Approval Certificate of Ballast Water Management System. The Certification was issued by the Liberian Register, with technical review by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
