Crowley Orders ATB at Bollinger
Crowley Fuels LLC has signed a contract with Bollinger Shipyards for the construction of a new 100,000-barrel-capacity articulated tug-barge (ATB) to transport multiple clean petroleum products in the Alaska market. The Alaska-class vessel will be built at Bollinger Marine Fabricators Shipyard, in Amelia, La., with an expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2019. California SLC Recommends Delay BWT Standards
The California State Lands Commission's (SLC) report '2013 Assessment of the Efficacy, Availability, and Environmental Impacts of Ballast Water Treatment Systems for Use in California Waters' concludes that no shipboard ballast water treatment systems are currently available to meet all of California’s performance standards for the discharge of ballast water. Commission staff reviewed 75 shipboard ballast water treatment systems for this analysis, however, significant limitations in the existing data hamper the ability of Commission staff to determine if shipboard ballast water treatment systems are available to meet California’s performance standards.

Hyundai Heavy Delivers VLCC with Electrolysis BW System
On Jan. 10, Hyundai Heavy Industries handed over a 317,000DWT VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) to Oman Shipping Company (OSC). The ship, measuring 1,093 ft in length, 197 ft in height and 99.7 ft in depth, is the first VLCC with the new electrolysis ballast water treatment system that can treat as much as 100,000 ton ballast water. Ballast water is sea water used to stabilize hull balance when unloading cargo, and to maintain optimal vessel speed. The seawater can contain bacteria, local plankton, mud and sand from the unloading port where the ballast water has been taken in.

MOL Installs Ballast Water Treatment System on VLCC
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced completion of work to install a ballast water treatment system on the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Libra Trader at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. On January 10, the company announced plans to install the system on a VLCC ahead of IMO installation compulsion. MOL is the first Japanese shipping company to install such a system for existing VLCC. Keppel Shipyard has timely delivered the vessel as committed and Libra Trader has already returned to service, and the ballast water treatment system will be tested and adjusted during operation.

The corrosion testing, performed by an independent third-party institute, proved the BALPURE system has no effect on coated steel, naval bronze and Cu-Ni alloys.
