First Issue of Carbon Credits from Intersleek Technology

AkzoNobel has announced the issue of more than 126,000 carbon credits worth more than $500,000 – the first to be awarded under the company’s landmark scheme for the shipping industry – which was developed in conjunction with the Gold Standard Foundation and the Fremco Group. Launched in 2014, the award-winning program rewards ship owners who convert existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling to a premium, biocide-free advanced hull coating such as AkzoNobel’s Intersleek –part of its International® brand – which is proven to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. On average, each of the 16 vessels included in the first issue achieved savings of just over 1,250 tons of fuel and 4,000 tons of CO2 per year, resulting in the award of 126,785 credits by the Gold Standard Foundation.

AkzoNobel’s landmark carbon credits methodology for the shipping industry has won the Best Offsetting Project award in the 2015 Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings. Spanish Ferry Operator Enrolls in Carbon Credits Program

Spanish ferry operator Baleària has signed up to AkzoNobel’s carbon credits program. The company has enrolled its passenger ferry Martin i Soler into the scheme, which financially rewards ship owners by enabling them to generate income in the form of carbon credits earned by reducing CO2 emissions. The landmark program was developed in 2014 in conjunction with the Gold Standard Foundation. It is based on ship owners converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium, biocide-free advanced hull coating such as Intersleek, part of AkzoNobel’s International  line of marine coatings. Intersleek products are proven to reduce fuel consumption, and hence reduce CO2 emissions.

Making Coatings Pay Twice Over: Joint Eco-Initiative

AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings business, supplier of International advanced hull coatings and The Gold Standard Foundation draw attention to a new and unique marine-based methodology to reward the improved fuel efficiency of ships within the international maritime industry. Certification by The Gold Standard for the first of its kind, peer-reviewed methodology will allow ships to generate carbon credits, thus income, for the CO2 emission reductions they achieve. The methodology is based on ship owners and operators converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium, biocide-free advanced hull coating such as Intersleek.
